Celtic-City partnership brings Roberts to Glasgow

497

Very pleased we have signed Patrick Roberts (18) on loan from Manchester City for 18 months. A few quick observations on this signing:

He’s another wide attacking player. I’ve lost count of the number of wide attacking players Ronny has signed but it’s far too many. Only Stuart Armstrong has come close to making regular appearances. This means we are still short of suitable options here, so need to recruit for the position, and that we have made a number of serious oversights.

The ideal signing is a loan with an option to buy. Next is a straight purchase, then a loan without an option to buy, but the market is changing.

I mentioned last month that as a consequences of the uber-rich hoarding players (Patrick is a case in point, £12m for a player who will be peripheral for years), mastering the loan market will be a key element to enable clubs to over perform.

Celtic appear to have struck up an understanding with Manchester City, one of the richest clubs/biggest hoarders in world football. There will be rich pickings here. Such was the demand for his signature, Patrick wouldn’t be near Celtic Park unless on a loan.

Jason Denayer’s time at Celtic worked very well for Celtic, the player and City, which is why we were able to secure Patrick for 18 months. More of this kind of thing, please, Celtic.

Welcome to Celtic, Patrick.

  1. I thought Sviatchenko looked the part yesterday. However, was it just me or did it sound like the commentator was saying Skiatchenko?

    Probably just me.

    We have three strikers. Some of those players are wingers.

    Considering that those players are expected to take up 3 positions in the starting 11, I’d expect Celtic to have at lease 8 (if you are including prospects who are out on loan)

    I would expect that a couple of those will be shifted out in the summer

    In small mediocre clubs the fans welcome any new signing because the chances are he is bound to be no worse than current players.

    That’s how I feel today in welcoming Paddy to the fold. I’m excited even though I don’t know anything about him. I’m excited because I do know what we currently have and that he can’t be any worse…

    I posted before Christmas (following yet another unseemly European exit) that RD in <100 games in charge had utilised:

    16 different players in wide right/left positions

    during those games a further 6 positional changes were made (i.e. Izzy/Mathews/Mulgrew/Janko etc)

    Total = 22 players!

    Now we have Christie with us and today’s addition of Roberts – this will take the total to 24!

    Can you honestly say that this ‘scatter-gun’ coaching approach by RD with a plethora of; lightweight/ lacking physicality and experienced players is progress???

    Recruitment = Utter Madness!!

  5. ……and Pep Guardiola taking over at Man City for next season. There goes our ‘special’ relationship with Citeh!!

  6. If Roberts is genuinely good and helps us to qualify for the Champions League, or to compete in the Europa, I for one will be happy. It seems to me he’s not here to help win the SPFL.

    I’ve got some electrical testing going on chez Fieldofdrams today and guess what, the cable-twirler is of the hunnish persuasion. One look at the posters on my son’s wall and he went into full let’s all laugh at Celtic mode.

    One quick lesson in the meaning of ‘liquidation’ later, and he’s gone awfy quiet, except to say that King has a £60m budget set aside for the summer. So…be afraid…be very afraid…

  9. The RC player conned the ref. (Easy thing to do if it goes against Celtic) with a dive he was cute, same as Craig Gordon being molested in goals, he got that one right but, Gordon dived, and no one laid a hand on him, been here before, some in here backing the ref? (That’s the way they see it fair enough) but some are just backing the ref. To suit there agenda to put the boot into the board and RD, not all, some, and it’s the usual suspects, and who are they? The ones that haven’t been here since the last game we lost of course. – – See more at: http://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/celtic-city-partnership-brings-roberts-to-glasgow/#sthash.e5EnzBPt.dpuf

    Tony

    I agree with your point that there are posters on here who will use any set back as a reason to advance an anti Board and specifically an anti Peter Lawwell agenda. I’m not one of those, I happen to think that as a Board in this economic and footballing climate they are doing as good a job as we could expect.

    But there is one glaring exception to that. Can you honestly say that you believe RD is the manager to take this club forward and deliver sustainable improvement both domestically and in Europe. To be clear, I’m not talking about trebles every year and winning the champions league. Just good quality football played by players who get what it means to play for Celtic and who demonstrate the guts and heart required to overcome the inbuilt obstacles a Celtic team in Scotland will always face.

    I wanted Ronny to succeed, and I still do, but how many big games do we need when our players seem to lack the heart needed, to demonstrate he does not have what it takes to inspire Celtic level performances when the chips are down.

    We have many good and some great players. We have about 20 full internationals on our books. They have shown with a favourable wind they can turn in some fantastic performances, but as soon as any well organised team gets a break or shows more fight than we do, Ronny’s teams shrink. That’s unforgivable to me and it comes from the manager.

    We will always have off days. There will always be results that are hard to take. But failure in crucial games is now becoming a hall mark of Ronny’s tenure.

    I remember saying not long after he was appointed that I had an inbuilt aversion to managers who talk about having a, “philosophy,” on how the game should be played. Tony Mowbray was the same.

    We have the players, we need a coach who can galvanise them and inspire them to be Celts. That’s not Ronny I’m afraid.

  10. Jeez…

    I go to all that rouble to make a reasoned point and he’s off……

    : )

  11. What an utter shambles .

    From top to bottom.

    Useless boards decisions on a useless manager and useless scouts.

    Far too many poor players.

    Our recent signings have been abysmal .

    The 3 from DUFC are simply not consistent enough for a club like Celtic .

    Cole and Cifti , crocked and crap.

    Boyata , Blackett, Janko simply poor defenders.

    Simunovic has been mediocre at best and has been injured too much.

    Something needs to change.

    Just look at the actual attendances.

    The board have to buck up .

    Recent performances from them have been desperate.

    They appoint Ronnie & Johnny and the scouts.

    Totally abysmal inept performances.

    Yesterday was not a shock for me.

    I’m totally gutted at how far we have dropped.

    But accepting being pish is just the new norm.

    We need a total shake up.

    I will be at Pittiodrie shouting on the Celtic , but much improvement is required.

    Too many losers at Celtic park these days.

    the first philosophy should be coaching and managing your team to win (or in some cases not lose) games.

    the best managers get the best out of their players both as a group an individually, i don’t think ronny has the emotional intelligence to handle that part of the job. maybe he’ll develop it, but he needs to do it now and quick.

    I agree with your post.

  15. Efa cost us that game, as he has so many times before, its time to move him on poor defender but nice guy same can be said for many…

    the likes of forrest, gms etc have had their chance and are no good enough, when you look at our team are their any players youd miss if sold today? We would moss griff that’s all and that’s the problem

    p.s well done ross county

  16. All we need now is some more wingers and everything will be sound.

    A team full of mid-fielders and wingers.

    That should sort it out.

    Craig Gordon

    Calum McGregor

    Tom Rogic

    Stefan Johansen

    So what’s the answer? You and I are on the same page re our feelings on the current state of affairs. It’s obvious however that a large amount of supporters are accepting of the current situation. As of course they are quite entitled to.

    What’s the split of happy campers to shafters? 50/50? Quite simply we don’t know.

    I would never tell anyone they are wrong in their opinions. They make up their own mind. As do we.

    Going to see Celtic play is a huge part of the lives of tens of thousands. From that first time you were lifted over the turnstile, then those joyous walks along London rd towards the floodlit stadium, on a Wednesday night for a European game, to that unequalled level of sheer elation after a victory over the rotten mob, you are part of something special, something unique. Overcome with pride as those green and white hoops emerge from the tunnel and ‘you’ll never walk alone resonated around Paradise’.

    It’s not all gone for me, not quite yet, but sadly it’s going.

    I fear unless something is done soon, those special feelings will be lost forever. So many empty seats now, European nights becoming desperate with only the odd return to those aforementioned Euro nights such as Barca and Man U.

    God forbid this is the new era we are edging towards.

    Someone needs to act, but who, and how?

    Unfortunately it would mean a boycott of a home game. Let the empty seats determine if indeed we are in the minority, or if in fact , the number of concerned supporters are relevant.

    One thing we do know. Money is all important to our custodians. It’s the one language they listen to.

    It’s not easy to ask fans to take such a drastic step, but putting the option before them may answer the question of whether or not we are correct in our feelings that this isn’t going to end well and action is imperative. If a boycott was called and 40,000 plus turned out, then all isn’t as we think. If 15000 turned out, then perhaps some action would be taken by the board to change the current direction.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Twists,I genuinely do not know the answer other than the obvious one.
    We’re f….d.
    To arrive at any other conclusion takes an amount of money which we can no longer contemplate.
    One thing you can give PL credit for,he was brought up in the Celtic tradition and had lived up to those lofty ideals.
    He has followed in the footsteps of all who went before him and refused to build from strength.
    It’s The Glasgow Celtic Way.
    Btw,a failure of his rarely mentioned nowadays cost the club about £10m.
    Bobo Balde
    Our best centre-half since Paul Elliot and Billy.
    Too expensive,don’t play him so I can force him out the door.
    Aye,the sharp-suited man did well there.
    He’s been a f…..g disaster.
