Celtic-City partnership brings Roberts to Glasgow

497

Very pleased we have signed Patrick Roberts (18) on loan from Manchester City for 18 months. A few quick observations on this signing:

He’s another wide attacking player. I’ve lost count of the number of wide attacking players Ronny has signed but it’s far too many. Only Stuart Armstrong has come close to making regular appearances. This means we are still short of suitable options here, so need to recruit for the position, and that we have made a number of serious oversights.

The ideal signing is a loan with an option to buy. Next is a straight purchase, then a loan without an option to buy, but the market is changing.

I mentioned last month that as a consequences of the uber-rich hoarding players (Patrick is a case in point, £12m for a player who will be peripheral for years), mastering the loan market will be a key element to enable clubs to over perform.

Celtic appear to have struck up an understanding with Manchester City, one of the richest clubs/biggest hoarders in world football. There will be rich pickings here. Such was the demand for his signature, Patrick wouldn’t be near Celtic Park unless on a loan.

Jason Denayer’s time at Celtic worked very well for Celtic, the player and City, which is why we were able to secure Patrick for 18 months. More of this kind of thing, please, Celtic.

Welcome to Celtic, Patrick.

Ronny is handing out contracts to players already at Celtic. He’s talking about keeping Mulgrew, Forrest, Johansen and Rogic.

Not every signing is made with the first 11 in mind. I imagine they felt KR is a better player to cover Griff than Ciftci.

  2. Eyes Wide Open on

Ive seen the pictures of Patrick Roberts and he looks every one of his 18 years and xx days of age – but not a single one over.

So when he plays, will we have to compensate for having such a physically weak player?

    Surely couldnt play him and any of the following in the same team sharing flanks;

    Forrest

    **Mackay Steven

    **Nesbitt

    *Christie

    McGregor

Like some others am trying to understand the logic, because with ** we have invested well over £2m in transfer fees, signing on fees and wages to try and develop and * is a product of our youth academy who everybody employed by Celtic that wears a suit has been espousing how important it is for them to get game time to develop.

I think we’re all struggling to see the logic.

A big part of the problem is the following:

    1) Over a year and a half into the job Deila still doesnt know his best 11.

    2) Certain players must be accomodated ahead of others regardless of current form.

Denayer/Forster have shown we can use the loan system to our advantage. If Roberts is as good as they say then we can enjoy watching him for the best part of 2 years and he can help us achieve a few objectives.

The deeper problem is the scouting and in particular the scouting of strikers. The ability to score goals no longer seems to be a pre-requisite.

There was a time in the late 90s/early 00s where nearly every striker we signed was a gem – Di Canio(winger turned striker), Cadete, Van Hooijdonk, Viduka, Larsson, Sutton, Hartson…

Notwithstanding the fact that the fees we pay for strikers now resembles that of the late 90s rather than the early 2000s – and that what you get for your money these days is considerably less – I still find it strange that so many duds have been picked up.

The market in England has clearly changed but we can still shop in the top flight of many European leagues – so many mistakes have been made its hard to fathom.

Where would we be without Griffiths input this season? Its for that reason I’d be reluctant to chase Stokes out the door. He is in demand for a reason. Strange that they may cite attitude as a factor when Kazim-Richards is on the way in as he is on the way out.

Strange goings on. A total rethink of transfer strategy may be in order.

I’d start by ensuring that the top two or three earners were always entertainers and/or goalscorers. At least that’d guarantee some value for money and give the kids some heroes again.

The scary thing is that when you have a shortlist of targets and you land no.3 or 4 and he turns out to be a dud, no.5 or 6 may get a shot.

    Welcome to Celtic, Colin!

  5. Still hoping that we can offload Bitton and Johansen today for decent money to EPL.

That should allow enough money to sign a decent defensive midfielder and right back and still provide Peter with his well deserved substantial bonus.

Plus should facilitate the triumphal glorious balance sheet waving ceremony at the agm.

  6. lennon's passion on

Seen this on another blog and they thought stokes had attitude.

Let’s look at Kazim Richards who turns 30 later this year. career:

    – Since 2004 he has played for 11 different clubs.

    – He has scored a paltry 53 goals in 366 matches.

    – He has caused numerous problems at every club he has been at.

    – He submitted a written transfer request at Brighton after being left out for ONE game.

    – At Fenerbahce, he left under a very big cloud of shame after lying to the club about his whereabouts when he hit the town for a piss up whilst under a four game ban and then denied it, causing the club enormous embarrassment when they published those denials in a press release.

    – Disciplined by Fenerbahce for having a very public spat with his own supporters, including using derogatory terms towards women and children.

    – His antics at Feynoord are well known; after objecting to an article written about his performances he told the writer that he was “waiting outside” and that he would “put him to sleep.”

    – In April 2014, he made football history in the UK by becoming the first ever player to be convicted, in court, of making a homophobic gesture to rival fans.

    And that’s just the tip of the iceberg – if he signs this would be our own version of El Hadj-Diouf.}

  12. Anthony Stokes will never play for Celtic again and the reason is nothing to do with his football ability. He is twice the player Cifti is.

Its all about the image attached to Anthony Stokes by the media in our wee country and PL and DD have bought it.

A club open to all, mmm, well some anyway !

As players I’ve no issue with either signing, although KR seems to have a questionable attitude. I’d imagine both players would offer us more in attack than Ciftci. Good business to get his wage out the door. .

Only questioning if our transfer dealings today had any baring on yesterday’s result? Personally I’d have shown him the door in November, perhaps PL & DD are running out of patience now?

Just speculating, though I would have thought we’d have at the very least completed the Ajer deal. I know there was an issue with sell on fees (or so the rumour goes) but the fact we haven’t got this one over the line, may indicate a lack of trust.

How so? Certain players must be accomodated – I didnt say the reason for this was because they were in our best 11.

Case in point – McGregor being taken of yesterday, when there were at least 2 other candidates who should have been hooked first. ie Johansen. He is being accomodated, regardless of his form.

  20. I sometimes cut referees some slack.

I have no problem with ref a giving a decision that ref b didn’t give in another game.

What annoys me is when the same referee gives different decisions for very similar incidents.

Was Griffiths in any of a less goal scoring opportunity up at Pittodrie than the guy yesterday??

Yes but you are projecting your “best 11” when in fact Ronny does know his “best 11” that’s why he plays players you think are being accommodated. Why else would they play if they weren’t in his best 11

It’s also funny how much the former whipping boy McGregor is suddenly a fan favourite and his subbing used to bash the manager, yet 12 months ago McGregor starting a game was used to bash the manager :O)

    Intractable Positions

As I write, Michael O’Halloran has been sighted at Murray Park by an STV cameraman who failed to record this on film. If he passes his medical, he will emerge with the blue ‘pay at the gate’ placard to fill the back pages of The Herald who will do anything to promote their sponsors. This site, with the 2.5m hits threshold breached yesterday, will continue to pour scorn on The Herald.

As Scottish football prepares to welcome Rangers into the Scottish Premiership, has anything changed during the four season hiatus? Has the anger at Rangers running up £96.6m of debt in any way dissipated? Will Scottish football supporters accept the phoenix club’s right to the historical achievements of the old company? Will the tax avoidance strategies that assisted in the winning of twenty titles be attributed to a financial misadventure that did not in any way procure a competitive advantage? Will the Scottish press revert to their ‘succulent lamb‘ heyday to please their commercial sponsors at Ibrox? In my informed opinion, only the latter of these four statements will hold sway. The anger will not dissipate. It will intensify.

Rangers supporters won’t hide their supremacist attitude under a bushel. They can have their cake and eat it. The Billy Boys will be sung at every ground where Rangers visit, and at Ibrox. Those who question their right to do so, with the only dissenting voice being that of Graham Spiers, will be gagged. No other title will tackle Rangers on this or any other issue as the experience at the Herald and the BBC shows that sports journalists are dispensable. Jim Spence, Chris McLaughlin and now Graham Spiers have had their wings clipped by Rangers. Would you jeopardise your career and your children’s future to criticise the Billy Boys anthem?

Rangers was formed prior to the creation of The SFA. They have never allowed the Park Gardens/Hampden tail to wag the Ibrox dog. The SFA have decided that Rangers are the same club despite incontrovertible evidence to the contrary. Charles Green, who created the phoenix club, is on record as stating that continuation was a myth. His Rangers Football Club was a marketing strategy for Sevco Scotland. This message will be reinforced ad infinitum in the criminal prosecutions that resume this week in Edinburgh High Court. It’s hard to argue with the architect of the phoenix entity, but the SFA and the SPFL will stick to their 5 way agreement bargain and deem that the phoenix club is the same club. As far as they are concerned Rangers survived liquidation and will be competing for their 55th league flag next season. The clubs in The Scottish Premiership will welcome the blue pound. Only the supporters of common sense will be short changed.

Were the DOS/EBT tax avoidance strategies an exercise in cheating? Mr Spiers thought so, as did Hugh Adam, but not the SFA or SPFL who set up a commission to exonerate Rangers and to impose a fine that has never been paid. Will the supporters of common sense accept this?

I get the distinct impression that the supporters of common sense will turn their backs on Scottish football. Scottish football governance are prepared to run with Charles Green’s marketing scam and those who refuse to accept it will have to either suck it up or walk away.

Andreas Brehme was the greatest ambidextrous penalty taker of all time – nowhere near as good a footballer as Lubo though.

The left footed players are better at corners and free kicks, just to balance things out.

    Nakamura Shunsuke for example.

Matt Le Tissier was the greatest of all time penalty kick converter. ( a good Celtic supporter as well)
