Celtic-City partnership brings Roberts to Glasgow

497

Very pleased we have signed Patrick Roberts (18) on loan from Manchester City for 18 months. A few quick observations on this signing:

He’s another wide attacking player. I’ve lost count of the number of wide attacking players Ronny has signed but it’s far too many. Only Stuart Armstrong has come close to making regular appearances. This means we are still short of suitable options here, so need to recruit for the position, and that we have made a number of serious oversights.

The ideal signing is a loan with an option to buy. Next is a straight purchase, then a loan without an option to buy, but the market is changing.

I mentioned last month that as a consequences of the uber-rich hoarding players (Patrick is a case in point, £12m for a player who will be peripheral for years), mastering the loan market will be a key element to enable clubs to over perform.

Celtic appear to have struck up an understanding with Manchester City, one of the richest clubs/biggest hoarders in world football. There will be rich pickings here. Such was the demand for his signature, Patrick wouldn’t be near Celtic Park unless on a loan.

Jason Denayer’s time at Celtic worked very well for Celtic, the player and City, which is why we were able to secure Patrick for 18 months. More of this kind of thing, please, Celtic.

Welcome to Celtic, Patrick.

And they haven’t even paid the virgin bill? Wow! Hi rollers.

That’s up there with Stokes and kc are guaranteed 40-50 goals in a season as the biggest piece of hysterical hyperbole on cqn this afternoon.

There’s nothing on paper that suggests CKR is better than Ciftci. If anything he’s a lot worse. NC scores or assists at 2x the rate of CKR.

  4. I hope we are not to be let down once more in this transfer period. Reflecting on yesterday and the way ahead, I think we need a defensive mid-fielder and a striker with the courage, determination and skill that exists in young Kieran. Perhaps we require more Celtic men in the team. If only the others had shown the same desire to win as the young man yesterday, it would have been a better result. We need more young men to come through the ranks with that spirit. We have signed so many poor players in the last three years and in doing so had to pay wages to people for sitting around contributing nothing to the team.

But ‘The Huddle’ thinks it is a legitimate argument that because other fans have criticised McGregor in the past, I am therefore not supposed to point out his excellent form at the moment and the fact that subbing him casts doubt on the managers judgement!

    —————

My argument was you saying Ronny doesn’t know his best 11 when the fact he picks players you and others see as not first 11 material proves that Ronny does know his best 11, it’s just not your best 11 :O)

McGregor was just used to show a player that lots on here don’t rate, Johansen is another one.

Except of course there’s documented proof of KC and AS doing just that. That’s not to say it would happen again, and it would involve dropping LG for AS, which would never do.

SA is a winger? Watching him yesterday he simply doesn’t have the pace for an out and out wide man.

GMS is our modern Simon Donnelly. AWOL when the chips are down.

Where was Cole? Is he injured?

Transfer day is bullcrap. SkySports advertising feast. And Jim……dear me….

  9. We should be actively offloading players, tens of thousands of pounds going out the door every week with little or no return.

  11. I take Sviatchenko and Roberts as good positives for this window. They wouldn’t be entirely negated by CKR but to be honest I’d rather we just looked to the youth for cover.

Richards has spent his career playing at a higher level than ciftci who has hardly scored a goal for anyone except dundee united.

he also has 37 caps for turkey, whereas ciftci didn’t even picked at u21 level.

  15. I’m happy with the squad for the run-in. What I want in the summer is a defensive midfielder.

I wasn’t sad to see Stokes go, but I’d rather him than Kazim-Richards.

  16. celtic40me on 1st February 2016 5:15 pm

37 caps and 2 goals both of which were in the one game against Estonia at home, in 2011.

Forgive me for being underwhelmed by his achievements.

As I said earlier he’ll have been well enough paid that there’s no reason to push himself for a last decent contract (unless we give it to him).

I see no reason at all for bringing him.

Is this young lad addressing our greatest weakness? Celtic badly needs leaders in its team, real men. Because we certainly don’t have them on the touch line. I don’t doubt he’s a very good player and hopefully a good addition to the team, but will he make the difference when the wee boys in our team are getting kicked up and down a heavy park like yesterday? I doubt it. And where is the team building here? As the years pass it just feels like we have a transient team where everyone is passing through. I can only hope Deila passes through soon. He is a truly hopeless manager for us and the longer we keep him the sooner Sevco will catch us. Well done Lawwell, that’s what you want after all. Some competition from the pseudo you know whats. I for one won’t be buying into that narrative. I’ll never recognise those cheats as Rangers and won’t ever attend a game with them. Unlike Lawwell I’m not willing to suspend my disbelief at the wee pretendy Rangers. Shambles.

I know, I was making a separate point about how the fact others criticised McGregor previously somehow detracted from my point in your eyes. Cheap point scoring eh;)

Maybe Johansen is in Deilas best 11. Football matches take place in front of real people though and people are allowed to go and observe how garbage Johansen has been for a long time.

On the available evidence on the pitch over an extended period, Johansen has been far from one of our best 11 players for a long time now.

But hey… lots of other people said nasty things about McGregor last year, so I shouldn’t be making that point;)

  20. Re yesterday, we should have been 2 up and possibly 3 before the penalty and sending off. Worrying thing for me was the delay in changing things at 2-1 when Armstrong couldn’t pass 5 yards to a team mate and others had fallen out the game.

I have tried to give Ronny the benefit of the doubt but my opinion is now that he has to go and the whole transfer strategy changed. Looking at our policy on Centre Forwards it is truly anazing that we try to talk ourselves up as a top club……..this Kazim Richards boy seems to have trouble follow him wherever he goes and yet again we are buying a non storing goal scorer. Truly shocking and I was up to recently a ‘happy clapper’ but no more, we are in trouble with policy and connecting fans to club. Will still sign up for my season ticket for 2016/2017 but I want change and the sooner the better.

  21. I thought we were supposed to be lightweight. We could do with a player thats a bit on the aggressive side.Rub up a few defenders who have been getting it easy against us

    Cultsbhoy,

There are a stack of players who should be out the door.

The plain fact is nobody wants them.

  23. Clink\o/ on 1st February 2016 5:26 pm

No use – we don’t get away with that type of approach. He would be booked for his first tackle and get the MIB message as soon as the hoops were on his back.

  24. Your point was that Ronny doesn’t know “his best 11”, you’ve contradicted yourself each time by constantly posting about Johansen not being good enough “in your eyes”.

  25. weeminger on 1st February 2016 5:25 pm

you asked for the proof on paper that he was better than ciftci – i gave it to you :)

my point was that he’s an improvement, albeit from a pretty low base, he can’t really contribute less than ciftci towards the title push this season.

i’m not exactly overwhelmed myself, but i’ll give him a chance

  26. celtic40me on 1st February 2016 5:31 pm

I’m never as -ve as this normally. I think it might be off-field issues he has.

If we’re giving people a chance it may as well be one of our own.

  27. Young McGregor is playing very well since his recall to the team since Brown’s injury and had the Ross defense in dire straits yesterday before being called ashore. Let’s hope he keeps his place for Wednesday night. Probably Ronny will stick with Efe in central defence, he was unfortunate yesterday but has been playing well in recent games.

    ======

Players are being accomodated where it is not merited. eg Johansen yesterday, Armstrong on the wing like the classic square peg in a round hole.

McGregor and GMS are in and out, flavour of the month then banished. Why does the same rules not apply to the likes of Johansen when on the available evidence on the pitch he has been FAR from one of our best 11 players for an extended period now??

  29. I did say sign an English player.

Think more perma-injured Andy Carroll, Darren Bent, Jonjo Shelvey, etc,…

In other words, totally mediocre players who have the fortune of having EPL “experience”, whatever that means, played 300 games and crap in all but 3 of them, but they still have the experience.

    Joke of a league.

Brown coming back and 1 of the noobs being good would make me ‘happy’ for the run in. So this is what a transfer windows is now.
