Celtic CL chances less than 50% so less money talk, Ciftci

203

You know I love a bit of financial chat, but there is so much to do before we can consider the potential £50m that awaits in the Champions League, after Uefa announced a spectacular increase in financial distribution for next season.

We have four rounds to negotiate.  Two, possibly three, will be difficult.  Right now, our chances of going through stand a little below 50%.  There is a lot of work to do in the coming weeks.  Don’t go counting on that £50m yet.

No harm to Nadir Ciftci, who wil leave the club at the end of the month, but he was made for different times.  His talent was evident at Dundee United but his work-rate there never marked him out as a Ronny Deila player.  It was an astonishing signing which sent worrying signs about our recruitment processes at that time.

    Interesting about Stephen O’Donnell, Kev.

    From Wiki Early career

O’Donnell began his career as a youth player with Wishaw Wycombe Wanderers and captained the Aberdeen under-17 team.[3] He then joined Celtic,[4] where he was part of the team that won the Scottish Youth Cup[5] and under-19 league title in 2010–11.

O’Donnell was released by Celtic in 2011[6] and on 23 August 2011 signed for Partick Thistle on a one-year contract after impressing on trial.

I hope you are out in the hills, enjoying life.

Luke will be at Stranraer next season.

    Hail Hail

  3. Ciftci was just a punt like Pukki or Bangura who were just more expensive punts.

Happens to all clubs that enter the transfer market.

Not a new thing or unusual Tony Cascarino Jim Melrose Paddy Turner yada yada yada

Nailed on, straight into the team centre half! Yes! We need one of those. And perhaps Kris Ajer as cover at right back? He can defend obviously and he can get forward like Kieran Tierney.

I’m sure I’m not the first to think of it.

Stephen O’Donnell was a very highly rated youth player with us but I think an injury held back his progress and he was released as a 19 year old. Was decent at Thistle (I go to a few Thistle games a season with my Jags supporting mates), better going forward than defensively. Probably the best right back in the league last season.

Watching him play for Scotland in the two internationals last week, I thought he was poor v Peru but played well v Mexico. Didn’t get a chance to show what he can do going forward (McLeish’s negative tactics stifled all attacking ability) and struggled defensively against Peru.

  6. Prior to us signing Cifti we played DU four times.

Before the the last game there were strong rumours that we would sign him.

I watched him carefully in that last game.

    My observations were:

he only operated between the halfway line and our box

he had some decent close control but to no great effect

he was completely exhausted after an hour.

He was a resounding NO from me but someone at Celtic Park thought differently. Whoever made the decision to buy him is/was in the wrong job.

I hope that person left a long time ago.

I’m in Limerick for a couple of days working. I will be busy but any suggestion on what to do and see if I get time?

  8. TOBAGO STREET

I beg to differ. Ajer can stroll forward from centre back but could not bomb forward like KT. He wouldn’t get by the full back as he’s too slow.

  9. I see Robertson from Sevco wants independent non execs to be independent, okay but Hughes resigned due to comments in a trade publication 12 years ago,why has this led to question marks over his independence from Robertson, surely only his conduct and judgement within the SFA should be what makes his or anyone elses independence questionable, SKY as usual pushing the independence line.

I think what Robertson means is to have people inside the SFA that support the Sevco agenda.

    Here we go again again.

Camp a) dinnae spend as that dizny guarantee qualification.

Camp b) spend to improve chances of qualification.

Camp c) if Plc don’t spend its because they have the right strategy.

Camp d) if Plc do spend its because they have the right strategy.

Camp e) I don’t care but will just agree with PLC cause I’m like that and those who disagree are not true Celtic fans.

Camp f) we’ve made millions and should spend identifying current weakness’s but not asking to overspend Outwith budget.

Camp f) disagrees with everyone and name calls those who disagree with Plc no matter the topic.

Camp g) if we spend we’ll die like Rangers.

    MWD not camp

  14. Moonbeams

Celtic have appointed Brendan as Head of the Football Department. He decides on what to spend his budget on. If he decides to give Rogic an Improved deal that is his decision. If he decides to release Ciftci again it is down to Brendan.

On transfers, again, Brendan looks at targets identified by the scouting department and decides on who he wants to buy and this comes out of his budget.

Now Brendan can decide to bring forward future Budget or indeed to defer it to the next window.

If we have a successful season then Brendans Budget gets increased. If we sell someone which again is Brendans decision then he gets the income into his budget.

Now Brendan controls all the make up of the squad.

I expect as is common knowledge we currently need a Centre Back and another Striker to make up our pool. To this we add replacements for players who are transferred out. For example, if Armstrong is sold then Brendan will need a replacement so a new signing will be made.

There of course are players who Brendan does not rate and these will be sold and if not possible will be offered out on loan.

Brendan will be given money for new players and the club will spend on pitch and ground improvements as well as revenue generation projects like Hotel and Museum

Ok folks, since its quiet, a trivia question.

Only two nations in this year’s World Cup, have their entire 23 man squad playing in their domestic league.

    Name them.

2 nations don’t have any players playing their football in their homeland.

    Name them.

My own view is that Jozo will go and that Martin (Morton) Commpner may (as) well join him. Jack Hendry, who I like, will get more game time in the season ahead, possibly at right back. If I am right, and who, in their right mind would say I was wrong, there is still good reason to sign an experienced centre back. Not my favourite player, but I see Jonny Evans might go to Leicester for £3 mill. An experienced player by any standard. Was worth four or five times that a few months back, when he was still an EPL player.

  25. Peter Lawwell said that Brendan identifies positions that need strengthened then it’s up to Lee Congerton and the Scouts to come up with several options for the position. These are then put to PL in order for him to look at what package would be needed to sign player A, B and so on.

As of now we should assume this part has been done. Now it’s a case of executing the deals. It’s worth noting that we didn’t sign Ntcham until the middle of July last year, it will take time.

Morgan, Christie and Edouard (we hope) are in.

Hayes and Bitton will return from major injury.

Ralston and Johnston will join the first team.

I am hoping for 3 quality signings, a right back, centre half and a playmaker/winger.

Ideally we will get rid of Compper, De Vries and Gamboa.
