Celtic CL chances less than 50% so less money talk, Ciftci

203

You know I love a bit of financial chat, but there is so much to do before we can consider the potential £50m that awaits in the Champions League, after Uefa announced a spectacular increase in financial distribution for next season.

We have four rounds to negotiate.  Two, possibly three, will be difficult.  Right now, our chances of going through stand a little below 50%.  There is a lot of work to do in the coming weeks.  Don’t go counting on that £50m yet.

No harm to Nadir Ciftci, who wil leave the club at the end of the month, but he was made for different times.  His talent was evident at Dundee United but his work-rate there never marked him out as a Ronny Deila player.  It was an astonishing signing which sent worrying signs about our recruitment processes at that time.

  1. DELANEYS DUNKY on 6TH JUNE 2018 9:02 PM

Dallas My dad took me to that game v Clyde. Was a last of the Lisbon Lions game. I was 5, I remember that day clearly.

*This was our 3rd game in 5 days; we had been scheduled to play the Honest Men on the Saturday prior, Parkheid was closed because the main beam in the stand was being replaced so we moved tae hunden, however typical Scottish spring weather meant the game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and the Ayr game rescheduled for the following Thursday.

The sheep however lost at Brockville that day which meant 3 points fae the last 3 games would be enough tae crown us champions, only 2 points for a win back then,

Meanwhile we still had a previously cancelled fixture at Love Street to fulfill which had been pencilled in for the Tuesday night.

The Buddies were fighting to stave off relegation and desperately needed a win to avoid going down. Twice they took the lead in a pulsating game by a youngster called Ally McLeod, no not the comedian that went tae Argentina with his army boasting Scotland would win the WC, twice we equalised so that was 1 point out of the 3 in the bag while unfortunately the home side were relegated.

So onto the Thursday night where prior to ko we announced we would donate £10,000 to Queens Park to assist with the necessary funds for upkeep of Hampden Park, even though they had done sfa, pun intended, for us. Ironically the other Ally McLeod was the away manager.

A pretty sparse crowd on a dreich night was on hand to see us equal Wullie Maley’s record; I was there with EDB’s young brother.

After the game Jock announced that the Lisbon Lions will play together for the last time on Saturday against Clyde and then sensationally the bully wee announced they didnae want tae play at hunden, the feeling among the support was that they figured with Parkheid out of commission the game would have to be played at Shawfield and they would reap the reward of a bumper crowd wanting to see the Lions in their final game. It should be noted also that wee ten thirty, Stevie and Luggy would be leaving on a free after this game.

Jock however called their bluff and announced we would host the game with only 3 sides of the park open.

That day I went up on the Lomond CSC bus which left from Alexandria up to Balloch and over the Black Hill to Helensburgh to pick up the local members of their CSC.

The bus was bouncing and the bevy was flowing fae ginger bottles full of Dumbarton’s finest export. Passing through Cardross we were in full song and rocking and rolling by the time we reached the Newton area of Dumbarton which wisnae that Tim friendly.

As for the game, it was one of the happiest times I ever spent in the Jungle other than when gubbin them capped by a hatrick fae the Buzz Bomb.

The season was not yet over as we won the SC in a replay against deidco with Skip Tae Ma Lou scoring our opening goal and 2 days later unleashed what would be the greatest of the Quality Street Kids at Rugby Park where he would score 6 goals on Frank Beattie’s testimonial.

Making this all the more pleasurable was “we don’t need yer colin stein” and the fife ned were guesting for kilmasonic with the latter getting a huge cheer when he missed a penalty with the score 2-1 tae the Tim Malloys.

Jimmynotpaul, sorry for the delay in replying.

The son of of the security guard at the front door in Northgate, is Perthshire’s centre forward, formerly at Blantyre Vics and Shettleston. . I have seen him play 3 times and in each game he has scored. He is a good player. When Shettleston were promoted 3 years ago to the top league, he was their main goalscorer.

Park Road, best of luck to Girvan in the play offs.

  4. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Tontine , was that the Ally MacLeod who later played for Hibs ?

  5. Delaneys Dunky on

    Dallas

Yes. I saw Ally McLeod play for Saint Mirren and Hibernian. I thought he was a crackin player for a fat lad. Hahaha

  6. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Delaney’s , McLeod was a skilful and street wise player but not the most athletic . He was a niggly player who was good at pulling and pushing opposotion players ten pleading innocence.

Hibs beat us 1 nil in a game at Celtic Park about September / October 1978. Willie Temperley who we had freed the previous close season, scoredHibs’ goal.

Hibs wasted time after scoring the goal with McLean excelling in . He specialised in passing the ball back to his keeper from our half and about the halfway line. It was infuriating but worked for his team.

  7. P67 — Expectation management in full flow.

Really is poor quality, low rent excuse making.

Come the qualifiers — will ŵe be a better team than twelve months ago?

    If not then why not?

The funds are there to spend.

The squad and its capabilities are well known.

If we have not made progress then you have to ask why?

What 2 players do we have coming through from the youths — MJ and who else?

What projects do we have who are ready to step up — EK at last and LM?

OE has already made the move and is no longer a project just a loan

What gaps do we have in the team and the squad?

Do we recognise them and are we going to fill them?

Are we going to put in sometime with the youths — last season was not great.

For the record we should expect to make the CL Group stage.

Failure to do so would mean some high earners leaving.

What are the financials of the teams we are going to be up against?

If we go out to a team with a lower TO then PL needs retired.

Qualification for the CL should not be considered as a success.

Winning games in the CL is what should be considered success.

Any more 12-1 aggregate defeats should see BR getting some coaching.

  8. All this negativity over JMcG is hilarious.

    .

SB had a very patchy season — some great performances but too many were phoned in and it showed. Next season will be more of the same so Wee need to plan ahead.

JMcG is a player we need.

If we miss him it will be a failure to match the big one who got away — JMcC.

Surely BR is a better talent spotter than Big TM?

  15. And in other news…

I see UEFA have fined Besiktas around £30,000 for “incidents” in a CL match this season against Munchen of Bayern. Apparently, fans threw objects onto the playing area ( seem to remember a couple of occasions when our neighbours across the city did the same and were hit with a fine of £0. SFA in more ways than one.

Also. Besiktas punished for allowing a cat to enter the field of play ?????

  18. I see that the Video Celts site is reporting tha the SFA have awarded Sevco “Silver Status* in approving their European license for this year to come. In contrast, Celtic have a Platinum rating and Hibs have been given a Gold.

The fudge seems to be that Sevco have Gold status for ground, First Team and Youth but were only awarded Silver for Legal Admin/ Finance & Codes. So, the supposedly good stuff boosts the bad stuff sufficiently to award the license.

Or, they are handing it over to UEFA to adjudicate?

I cannot see UEFA being interested unless the host authority (SFA) flags concerns to them.

Seems to me, that there is no appetite to touch them

  19. Watching the goals from the Scotland v England U21game last night. Mikey Johnston’s goal gets better with every viewing. Worrying.y though is how poor Tony Ralston was at all three England goals. Half @rsed challenges and positionally awful, the bhoy seems to have regressed following his loan to DU. Can’t see him challenging for a place next season, probably a season long loan (at a better side than DU) to get some game time and form is what’s needed for him.

  20. SFTB

It looks like they are passing the buck to UEFA. There’s is an appetite within UEFA to tighten up on licensing, Milan being a prime example just now, but it’s whether they bother with Euro minnows that’ll determine what happens to Sevco. I suspect they’ll do nothing safe in the knowledge they’ll struggle to get through qualifiers.

  21. SETTING FREE THE BEARS FOR RES. 12 & OSCAR KNOX

Looks like we’re going to find out if there’s any appetite for change and a clean game just shortly…

  22. If there is or was a doubt about a euro licence it would have been known by now, if there a will to do nothing a way will be found, financial losses balanced against real estate is this what has got them a licence, the flexibility in all that applies to them continues, remind me what exactly has changed?

Alex (Dixie) Ingram was indeed a cracking header of the ball, went from Ayr Utd to Nottingham Forest then set up a very successful car dealership in Ayr, Ingram Volkswagen.

My understanding was that KE folded and merged with KR aka the “Wee Gers”.

To their credit they were a fairly well integrated mob — Bingo in the social club on a Sunday did not start until Mid-day mass was out and the faithful had walked down the hill.

Been to Duncansfield a couple of times in the 70’s to watch them.

Always a bit of a link due to the 1967 angle — winning the Junior cup made it a good year for for the whole town.

Interesting story about the captain of KR that year — gave up playing as he thought he had gone as far as he could in the game winning the SJC. Or so he told my father after mass on a regular basis.

Away from football, I see that nightclub owner Peter Stringfellow has passed away at the age of 77.

Stringfellow built up a playboy reputation in London but was as sharp as a tack when it came to business.

I spent a very unusual night with him sometime in the 1990’s and enjoyed a very very good steak in his nightclub while talking to him about business and the idea of him opening a Cabaret of Angels Club in Glasgow.

One of the other diners at our table that night was a certain Craig Whyte – who I paid little attention to never thinking that he woul one day buy the Gers. I just some him as a wee chancer with a bit of money (not much) but balls of steel.

Stringfellow was absolutely the opposite. A really sharp brain, very good with figures and business sense but absolutely able to turn on the daft missle aged playboy act in an instant – espcially when he wanted to mask the business he was talking about.

Whyte wanted to be taken seriously and acted as a wannabee — Stringfellow was a serious player who pretended to be daft. He owned property, had cash, and was very sharp and knew what rules had to be played to.

A certain Scottish nightclub owner marched down to London and announced that he was going to show them all down there how to operate.

He was soon sent packing and given a lesson in how to do business etc.

Anyway, god love big Peter as he is no longer with us.

He wouldn’t be top of my list of folk to go for a night out as I hate nightclubs despite working for them for decades. No doubt I wouldn’t have been top of his list either.

He was pretty pally with Frankie MacAvennie though.
