Celtic coaches and the March Grand Tour

453

The March international break is one of the most important of the club season.  It is when managers and coaches get to take a proper look at the players targeted for the summer transfer window.  The Celtic management team will have looked at dozens of players on video since the January window closed, but, this break from domestic football, gives them the chance to do the Grand Tour, their last opportunity before the end of the season.

Having despatched his nearest two rivals away from home, with 10 men, in recent weeks, Brendan Rodgers took enormous pressure off the remainder of the season, which now largely consists of preparing for next month’s Scottish Cup semi-final.  Energies will have made a significant switch towards preparing for July’s Champions League qualifiers.

Getting these decisions right can be the difference between success and failure; Brendan will have used his ‘time off’ wisely.

Often thought about big Lou, I worked beside him in Royal Mail, nice big guy.

    Mini me’s… Lol

I have a son and people say the same about him and me, although he and my daughter have dark hair like their mother, so I cannot see how he looks like me. He is a grumpy bugger like me. But a great Bhoy

Brian’s dad passed away at start of year, he was a big inspiration to me when I was trying to make it as a football player. Brian is a good guy.

  2. Yep – I was told that the egg was the stone that was rolled away

    On another note-

Who is Tam McManus? – I just ‘found’ a Herald

Poor soul hasn’t a glue why – ‘ditch Scotland, tax dodger’ might be unpopular with fans! As Para Handy might say ‘churnallist my bahoochie’

Aye I said something like that to the Mrs and had also heard DD’s idea about the stone, Easter is huge here which I find really strange as the Swiss are not really the church going types.

The kids here have the chance to opt out of religious education which we took, my Mrs being Buddhist and me being a tased Catholic it didn’t seem to make much sense to have the wee one brought up in the Christian tradition.

The wean of course had no interest in the deeper symbolic meanings she just wanted to know when she could scoff the choco:)))

Re. your link I would not be surprised if the egg/bunny thing came from the pre-Christians Spring festivals.

That is mental. I sat beside Pat Crerand at Lou Macari testimonial. Got him to autograph my Programme. Gave it to my dad. He was well chuffed. He loved PC. We were beside each other that match. Truly mental. I had a curly mop of hair then. :)

GFTB- regarding Paddy Crerand. Always been told he was an uncle via marriage. Got a stadium tour after my first match in 1961 thanks to him.

Last time I saw him was at Old Trafford at the Dundee United second leg of a Euro tie. The pal I was with said “look there’s your uncle Paddy”. He turned around and said “Who said that and why am I your uncle?” I just told him my second name and he sort of smirked and scampered off. I didn’t mind, however, ‘cos standing next to him was a real legend.- the Great Daniel Fergus McGrain. And to top of a great evening, the one and only 10:30 rubbed shoulders with me in the old Trafford bar after the game and he was in great form…. Oh, and happy belated birthday, Bertie

Your song choices from Jamaica remind me of my 2 years in Derby. My favourite place was a yardie club in Normanton. There was only ever 2 white dudes in the place on a Friday night. Myself and an Irish lad fae Dublin. The rastas loved us, and said we were the only white dudes allowed. No white Englishmen went near the place. The ‘erb they sold me was mind blowing. They did a mean Guinness and rum too. The joys of teen years.

    —–

DD, your club in Derby, reminds me of one that me and a few pals visited in Mosside (forgive the spelling) in Manchester when we were down for Lou McCarri testimonial.

5 of us all about 16 at the time were the only whites in the place, went down on the old Dry Dock bus. One of my mates who you know (bud Flannigan) nipped a black lass in a pub in Manchester town centre and that’s how we ended up in this Rasta club… It was Incredible speakers the size of the ceiling and blokes dressed like Huggy bear.

    Unbelievable night

My memory of the club sound system in Derby rasta club.was the pressure on my chest from the bass. Loud as hell.

I went to the Lou Macari testimonial on Lisbon Lions bus, we stayed in Blackpool the night before a game. Went to a club that was full of English squaddies. Mad Cokey grabbed the Mike off the dj and sang Go on home British soldiers. I have never been involved in a riot like it.

man united were at tannadice. i think they won 3-1.

there seemed to be united fans at old trafford that night, as each goal put on the scoreboard was met with a cheer. in the clock end though, a chant went up of

“theres only one united, and thats a flickin biscuit”.

I was at that DUFC game. Was staying in Derby at the time. I drove up with two Celtic supporting pals. After the game we were walking to the car talking. A manc heard my accent and the three of us took a helluva kicking. Have never liked them since.

The original fixture was cancelled due to the snow.

I have 2 tickets for sale within the Club Celtic Lounge for this fixture.

They are going for face value of £65 each .

Brians dad and my own dad used to play for Duntocher Hibs back in the day.

They used to tell me about the time when they and Paddy Crerand went over to Ireland to play in some select game, don’t know if it was through DHibs or before that a schools thing.

They said this 1 year Paddy had signed for celtic and he had his blazer with him and they were drunk and my dad was sick all over it. Next day Paddy was asking where his blazer was, the 2 of them had to tell him, they said Paddy said don’t worry about it I will get it dry cleaned and keep receipt and that he had another blazer anyway.

One of the many stories they told us

  28. People talk of how they feel when Kenny Dalglish left. My moment like that was when Pat Crerand left. He was the best Celtic I had seen. (Mind you, within a year or 2 Bobby Murdoch was our new right half and things only got better…)
