Celtic craft needed against frugal Aberdeen

230

It will not have escaped your attention, that in the last week in October, the Celtic machine is purring away magnificently, but Aberdeen sit aside them at the top of the league table. The form of Aberdeen is the great untold story of this season; so far. That untold element will change tonight if they extend their unbeaten run, against Celtic.

There are clues as to the pattern of play we can expect. The Dons have conceded just one goal in their last five league games, they will give us lots of the ball, but deny us space in and around their box. They do this well.

Celtic will need two weapons to combat this: Patrick Roberts’ cunning in tight spaces, and Tom Rogic’s ability to ping shots in from the edge of the area. I would like to see us pass the ball more than we did for long spells on Saturday, but our usual arc of possession around the opposition box is unlikely to create space. We’ll need to take shooting opportunities and hope Patrick’s on form.

Incidentally, have you seen the Celtic players pay tribute to the greatest fans in the world yet?

Meanwhile there’s a new CQN Podcast out where we look at how Celtic reached the final in the 4-2 win over Hibs.

Kevin Graham hosts our match day podcast from Hampden on Saturday and this features some of FIFA’s Best Supporters in the World.

This week’s Matchday Special saw Brendan Rodgers’ side carry a 59-match undefeated domestic run into the League Cup semi final against Neil Lennon’s Hibs.

Kevin provides pre and post-match discussion as well as in-match analysis in what will be a regular Celtic State of Mind feature.

  1. Sun is shining in Aberdeen, with clear blue skies, and no rain forecast. might not be very warm ( not Munich-like), but for this time of year, not much to complain about.

Agree that this will be our toughest ( domestic ) game so far this season, and there won’t be many tougher in what remains of the season. However, we shouldn’t fear playing The Dons at home – we’ve won 25 out of the last 31 games there, so our record is probably as good there as anywhere else. No reason to be complacent though. We’ll need to be on the front foot from the first minute. I’m sure Brendan and the players will be approaching the game in the right way.

If anyone travelling to the game today has a ticket which would otherwise be unused by the time they got to the Granite City, I’ll happily take it off their hands ( and pay for it, obviously )

    Early start for Pittodrie?

I’ve taken a vow not to do forecasts, started it last season. Worked so far.

I’ll miss the game as usual, early start tonight,so I hope to read good things around midnight when I have my break.

    Magic!

And perhaps The Market for the BM match next week?

  4. Big Tam Rogic to score ANYTIME and Celtic to win 4-2 is 50/1 with bet365…my money is on.

Big Tam will have The Sheep running to the hills yet again….they don’t like it when Big Tam is playing against them.

What a laugh that Huns latest statement is following their defeat to Mudderwell…..I’m just surprised that ANYONE at Ipox can even spell “Credibility” ?

The Ipox Circus Caravan is just like “Moon River”………it just keeps rolling along !

  5. I’d start Forrest tonight, Roberts has been poor this season by his own standards and was anonymous against Hibs.

  6. 25 wins out of the last 31 is probably all games since 2009……can’t see how we could have been at Pittodrie 31 times in 8 years. That’ll teach me to take the BBC at their word :-(

  8. I’d thought my ‘start Jamesie not Paddy’ comment might add a new twist to the article.

But instead I see I’m part of a flock replying to ewe Paul with shear brilliance in terms of how best to turn the sheep into lambs for the slaughter.

  11. Jamesgang,

were you trying to pull the wool over our eyes ?

I think Paddy might get the (lamb) chop tonight in place of wee Jamesie too, but would like to see him come on later on and inflict some bad Korma on a tired sheep defence. ;-)

  14. Will tonight be the night that we are finally bleaten?

Regardless of the result, I hope it’s a great night for our rambunctious support…

  15. Yesterday, for me anyway, was the saddest day ever on this site. The suffering was palpable, and the outpouring of empathy and compassion was fantastic and so, so heartfelt . It got me thinking how lucky I am to be a Celtic supporter and just how special it is to be among the fantastic Celtic family.

I suppose all supporters of all clubs think their club is the best, but we see reasons every day how very special we are. The work done under the radar for charity, it truly is amazing, and that my friends IS, why we have been voted the best.

    We are so very blessed.

Mornin’ CQN. Today’s to do list.

    1) Negotiate with Mrs H (bribe) to have first dibs on the living room telly tonight.

    2) Deposit sufficient Stella’s in the fridge good and early.

    3) Text my pet sheep with wind up,

    4) Prepare early dinner for Mrs H getting home from work, to eliminate any encroachment in to game time.

    5) Enjoy watching the Champions. Win, lose or draw.

A good start. Items 1) and 2) already done. Item 4) has passed planning. Can’t do 5) until later. So away to think about 3).

    Life’s good. :)

  19. If we’re mint to beat the sheep tonight, we’ll beat them. it’s Korma, i tell ya , and I’ll be Dansak in the streets ;-)

  20. Hunderbirds are Gone on

Aberdeen are quite strong through the middle, so our defenders should concentrate on shepherding them into wide positions.

Adam Rooney reminds me of a former Dons striker, Shearer.

As the game is on BT Sports, I will look forward to Chris Mutton’s comments.

Curva Nord closed in consequence of racist behaviour at a game v Sassuolo. Relevant Ultras moved to the Curva Sud . . They proceeded to plaster the seats with stickers of Anna Frank wearing a Roma shirt . Not content with that they displayed a striscione featuring the same image throughout the game . Much handwringing after the game . Lazio will be fined . Spokesman for the relevant Ultras has claimed it was nothing more than banter. Lazio are very likely to be in the next round of the Europa League.
