Celtic deliver best performance of season

157

It was cold and very wet as we walked away from Celtic Park last night, but with adrenaline coursing through the veins, still coursing hours later as we tried to sleep, no one really noticed.  We had just watched Celtic’s best performance of the season, one in which several players grew into the jersey before our eyes.

The gradient on Odsonne Edouard’s blossoming ability has been steady in the two-plus years he has been at Celtic.  Suggestions that we would pay PSG the agreed £9m option for him were laughed at in 2017, but when he goes, as he will eventually, it will be for more than the £25m we received for Kieran Tierney.

The only question I have over him is whether he has already overtaken Moussa Dembele in ability.  You would be hard pushed to counter this point.

Mohamed Elyounoussi demonstrated why Southampton spent so much money on him last year.  This was a physically challenging game and Mohamed wholeheartedly threw himself into challenges and constantly made himself available.  His pass that set James Forrest off before returning the ball to Mohamed, was a peach.

Not that that was the best pass of the night. This particular honour goes to Callum McGregor.  Some of us grew up on tales of what Bobby Murdoch could do with a ball.  I will not go into detail here, but look back at Callum’s pass and you’ll get the idea.  Boli Bolingoli had work to do to catch it, but when he did, he dinked the ball over the lunging defender for Odsonne to head home.

At this stage, Celtic looked set to run Cluj ragged but expending so much energy early on caused the game to settle until the break.  Cluj struggled to make an impact in the final third, relying on corner kicks and one free kick, which Fraser Forster did well to block.  The rebound was knocked forward by a Cluj striker to a teammate in an offside position, who knocked the ball over the line.  That was pretty much all Celtic had to worry about until very late in the game.

The outcome was in the balance for much of the second half.  Celtic’s game management was much better than their Glasgow meeting in August, although in this respect, the unusual wait until the 86th minute before making a substitution when so many players on both sides were clearly flagging.

Ahead of their fourth meeting of the season, in Romania, Celtic are ahead 6-5 on aggregate, in truth, there is not much between the teams.  Celtic delivered a hard won result which places them top of the group.  There is a decent chance both will qualify for the knock-out rounds.

This feels like a memorable season in the making…

Won’t lie, was a sceptic myself, till I saw him on TV at Poundland, then close up at Celtic Park.

Smashing player for that amount, looks a bargain 👍

-along with Boli Bolingoli whose chipped assists, KT still dreams of completing.-

did you see Arsenals first goal last night?

No, I missed that, but get the feeling you are going to tell me his chipped a beauty? I know he played well from the reviews, but Boli Bolingoli deserves enormous praise for the way he’s attempted fill big boots, left vacant.

What I will say is that Kieran for all his £25M worth, sometimes lacked subtlety in his final pass, how many times did you see him ‘murdering the ball’ to the back post?

Bolingoli plays a lovely weighted cross often missing in most full backs IMO

The ticket office are probably complying with some new law on informing folk of a debit. Just a guess, anyway might be a good idea for some folk and costs the club nothing

  7. Enjoying the posts on here today, after a really impressive performance last night. It’s a much easier read when the negativity gives way to positive vibes!

I’ve heard that Cal Mac’s family may have an open mind as to who is the best team in Scotland, only mentioned as perhaps when it comes to staying for 10 in a row etc, he may be a wee bit different from say – Paul McStay.

  9. With storm Lorenzo howling outside as i watched the game on tv the unfortunate Cluj players were caught in the eye of a raging Celtic storm at Parkhead last night. This was an awesome show by Celtic and easily their best performance of the season.

I have no hesitation in awarding all the Hoops with and 8 out of 10 with the goaladors getting a 9. all Neil Lennons new signings came of age last night and particularly the defence being rock solid. This was a performance for Europe and the problem now for Lenny is to hold onto all these guys for next season.

  10. SS- Et al,ditto, I phoned the ticket office, and they said emailing you re HCTS ,will happen this season, found it strange as well, but all is fine Bhoys.

  11. It was evident from the body language particularly of the Hoops foreign players last night that these guys thrive on playing in European competition and the importance of Celtic qualifying for either Champions :League or Europa it doesn’t matter which.

European football under the lights generates an atmosphere completely different to domestic games. ( Even the huns games which are atmospheric, but of a different type )

Watched the game today on BT and what a show. The best in the UK bar none, a wonderful platform for our current players and a magnificent advert to attract quality players.

What a contrast to Sunday’s equally important game. We must be equally motivated and I’m sure we will.

    HH to all.

  13. News is reaching us today, via a number of sources, on the topic of Club 1872 and the Rangers share offer.

Despite trying various avenues to have the story verified, we have so far been unsuccessful. Whilst we genuinely hope it is not the case, we can only share the story in order that the matter may be cleared up.

Over the past few months, we became increasingly worried about the manner in which Club 1872 were endlessly begging for contributions, one off financial gifts and attempting to raise funding by any means possible. We found it strange and something we might expect, not from an organisation associated with our club or it’s fans, but from our rivals.

The obvious use of emotional blackmail was thoroughly distasteful and reeked of desperation. Today, we are being told that Club 1872, unbeknownst to members, secured funding to participate in the Rangers share issue by way of a loan agreed several weeks ago.

If there is any truth in this story, Club 1872 has to make its members fully aware of the loan, its terms and the financial implications therein. If you are a C1872 member, you have a duty to ask the organisation why, if this is the case, you were not informed. Why were you constantly asked for more contributions when funding was already in place? Why you were duped into thinking funds to buy the shares had yet to be secured? Why you were now being asked to hand over cash from the C1872 projects account to the shares account?

We truly hope this story can be verified as false and that the Directors of Club 1872 have not deceived its members. Many individuals are now spreading this information over social media and it’s a matter that desperately needs cleared up. The fans certainly don’t need to be the victims of any further subterfuge after the goings on of 2012.

It would be a thoroughly despicable act should any organisation embark on such a scheme of dishonesty, double dealing, duplicity and deception. Will Club 1872 respond to these latest accusations, or will they remain quiet as they did when questioned over Chris “The Muslim Baiter” Graham’s involvement a few weeks ago? God Bless Our Team

Good evening all from the sub tropical environs of Govanhill and the Star Bar. The mighty Glasgow Celtic were marvellous last night.

  16. If not for deflections and penalties big Fraser would have had 8 clean sheets out of 8 appearances since he returned.

However the undeniable bonus is the calmness and confidence he instills in his defence.

    A phenomenal signing….

  17. Great atmosphere last night, reminiscent of old Euro nights

Rodgers’ style of playing the ball along the back and side to side in the midfield sucked the atmosphere out of Celtic Park at times

Breaking news – just checked and there are now 70 emails waiting fo me to open with your opinions on our best 3 players from last night. This is the highest number of votes for any game so far so thank you for your interest. if I may be bold enough to suggest this, it has also generated a fair bit of ‘pure Celtic’ debate on the site too. However, don’t feel left out – still 3 hours to vote. All you need to do is show your 3 top players names in an email to cqnpoy@gmail.com and that’s you par of the bestist fastest growing clique on CQN! Poster or lurker – we are a survey open all!

I suppose I better start adding up the votes now.

    Back in a while….

  19. ast season Celtic played their first preseason friendly on 28/6/2017 & finished the season v Aberdeen in Cup Final on 13 th. May 2018, In between they played 6 Friendlies, 38 League Games, 4 League Cup Games, 5 Cup Games & 14 European games.

67 Games in Total, 61 Competitive.

This Season our close season again lasted 44 days & we were off again with an extra European Qualifier to play, our Friendlies were cut by 2 to cater for earlier European Games. WE have already played 10 European Games with another 4 to come, if we get out of Group and progress in domestic Cups we will exceed 61 Competitive Games this Season.

Many of our first team squad also play International Football.

Callum McGregor played in 59 of our Competitive games last year & also played 8 times for Scotland that is 67 Competitive Games in one season.

We should put a few quid in each and buy a wee Trophy. Then deliver it to Celtic Park at the end of the season with an explanation on how it was decided.

I’ll be honest and admit that adding up the votes for this one has given this particular anorak-donned saddo much excitement. After every 10 emails I had my own wee check at the ‘league table’ and the top 6 players were constantly changing.

At the moment here are 2 players tied on 48 votes. Better still, 3rd, to 6th are on 25, 25, 24 and 21. So there really is all to play for!!

Clearly a good Manager and Coach. Huge Ego has been his downfall in the past. Time will tell if history repeats itself at Leicester. Seems to be able to reel folk in with his bullshit but it wears thin after a while. A Mourinho type Manager, not a long termer, after a couple or years it normally starts to unravel. Recruitment is very patchy at best and good at blaming others.
