Celtic deliver Sviatchenko below radar

485

18 days into the transfer window we’ve landed our first business, 24-year-old Danish international central defender, Erik Sviatchenko, joining from Danish champions Midtjylland, who are due to compete in the Europa League knock out stages next month.

On paper this one ticks all the boxes. The player has been tested in a league a little stronger than our own, and in Europe this season, where Midtjylland eliminated Southampton, Bruge and Legia Warsaw. He will add security to the back line in the chase for the treble, and will be ready for Champions League qualifiers in August.

Ronny Deila now needs to make sure Sviatchenko and Simunovic form a proper defensive partnership – something we’ve lacked this season. Pressure will now mount on Efe Ambrose (27) and Dedryck Boyata (25) to up their game if they are to force their way back into the team. Both are in their prime years, but older than the two I expect to keep them out.

I’ve been shouting for a defensive mid for two years, most noticeably on Friday night, when Dundee United ran straight up the middle of the park to score, but we’ll see what shape the team takes after the addition of Erik.

I think Celtic should also be congratulated on getting this business done below the radar until close to the finish line. We’re involved in lots of transfer speculation at the moment but don’t spend your time researching every name that pops up. There will be five players linked to the club for every prime target.

Welcome to Celtic, Erik.

Support not happy re the quality of the squad/the quality of the player..Support not happy that Berlusconi is no longer flashing the cash.Support not happy with Galliani ,the CEO .Many think he has too much influence..Add the crisis, high unemployment and a growth in the perception that Italian fitba is corrupt.Surveys indicate that many people have stopped attending in consequence of the violence associated with football.

How does Jinky’s injury record compare with JF’s?

*wisnae the wee mhan’s injury problems that was the cause for concern, it was his disciplinary ones, on and off the field.

Aye – those are well-documented – some of them still producing mirth today!

My query was in relation to the discussion around James Forrest and one poster had pointed out (as others have in the past) that inconsistency is something wingers are renowned for – that even Jinmky could infuriate and got pelters at times.

My point was that it’s JF’s lack of availability for selection that seems the issue for many. So I wondered how his absence record compared with Jinky.

*naw he wisnae, it was his da that was the Celtic supporter, MON supported Derry City and Sunderland, the latter because they played in Derry’s colours.

Forrest’s sturdy legs, so reminiscent of Gerd Muller, are still strong, dynamic pistons on a powerful behind that saw him net almost a goal a game in more than 160 appearances in just four seasons before he was scapegoated and, effectively, sacked from the club he still loves.

  11. Didnt know Tony D is not on blog anymore? Barred or self-imposed exile? I enjoy Tony’s posts, some are near athe knuckle, but most of the time he stands his ground, it’s obvious some posters have a certain antipathy towards him, and are revving up their offended innate trait. Haste ye back Tony!

Bayern: too big for the Bundesliga

Bayern Munich chairman and head of the European Clubs Association, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, has relaunched the idea of a European Super League.

Rummenigge told a gathering at Bocconi business school in Milan that a 20-team league drawn from the continent’s top championships was very much a possibility and that one of the main drivers of the concept was the ever-growing gulf between the big clubs and the rest in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and England.

The Bayern boss, clearly flying a kite to gauge reaction, denied he was attacking UEFA and the current Champions League model, insisting that football had to adjust to ” the new challenges of globalization”. Rummenigge added that the Super League could either be run under an UEFA banner “or also privately”.

It’s not hard to see where this is all going. Growing tired of their absolute dominance of the Bundesliga, Bayern are scouting for new frontiers. And probably as soon as possible.

interesting article from world soccer, imo the only way a ‘Euro league’ system can happen is under Uefa but it is interesting to note the undercurrents coming from this leading ECA member.interesting times ahead me thinks which could affect our club

I don’t really enjoy TD’s contributions, tbh. I think yesterday he well overstepped the mark. Having said that, however, there are a couple of others still on here who have deliberately targeted and antagonised him. Whether they’re even deserving of the name “clique” I doubt but they are not in my opinion worthy of the name “Celtic supporter”.

    A Nuclear Winter of Discontenthis

    by sitonfence

Keith Jackson, who allegedly picks up £80,000 per annum to write one article per week, has reverted to his familiar theme that Scottish football without Rangers is a hollowed exercise in futility. Apparently what we are witnessing each week are teams contaminated with radioactive isotopes from the fallout from the Armageddon when Rangers imploded. Mr Jackson’s geiger counter is off the radar.

Mr Jackson posits that CC King is The Winston Wolfe of Scottish football. Mr King not only has the ambition, but the wherewithal, to cleanse our game of its nuclear malaise and to rejuvenate our game from its winter of discontent. Last I heard Mr King was grubbing along on what was left of his director emoluments in 2014 from a company built on sand. The tide came in and swept 45% of this company away in 2015. Mr King has been fully engaged in a forlorn attempt to stop his company’s shares devaluing further. His idea of ‘cleansing’ Scottish football is to issue a withering warning to club chairmen that if any of them break cover to pursue title stripping he will vigorously pursue any flaws in their financial husbandry at their own clubs. This flies in the face of Mr Jackson’s assertion that our career criminal chairman is the Mr Clean of Scottish football.

The Rangers Revival is a confection of soft loans and broken promises. There have been so many financial misdemeanours, such as AIM, ISDX and de-listing, that a cogent case could be made for corporate malfeasance. Mr Jackson’s article resembles a retread of a PR puff piece from The Minister of Pishery, Mangetout Traynor.

According to Level 5/ Keith Jackson both Mr O’Halloran from St Johnstone and Mr Diagouragan of Brentford will be signed by Rangers for the best part of £1m before the week is out. If this is true, then Mr Warburton has revised his initial offers for both players from £100,000 plus a £50,000 CL squirrel to £450,000 for each, which is £100,000 more than their Transfer Markt value.

I would ask those who actually read Mr Jackson to challenge him on this PR puff of £1m. Rangers do not have the £400,000 necessary to pay the deposits on players with a combined value of £1m. They have just engaged in a vigorous defence of a £300,000 ring fencing and need to find £130,oo to oppose Green at The Court Of Session this month. Next month they could be looking at a £500,000 bill for costs and £200,000 in damages in the contempt of court hearing, although I posit that this unlikely in the presence of Justice Smith. Neither player is required now to win The Championship so why not wait until the close season?

If Mr Jackson is lying, I would hope that those who actually read his poorly constructed narratives choose to ignore his copy in the future.
