Celtic do enough to ensure return of league title

398

Having been ahead only to be pegged back for the second time in a fortnight against Newco, there was a deflated feel inside Celtic Park at the end of the game yesterday.  After taking the lead through a Daizen Maeda – Jota combination, Celtic created enough chances to put the game out of sight.  They didn’t.

Newco equalised with the best move of the game and thereafter had a hatful of opportunities to win the game and cut the deficit at the top of the table.  They also failed in this objective.  Celtic remain six points clear with three games remaining, it is now only a matter of when, not if, they will win back their title.

Just as at Hampden last month, Celtic opened poorly, unable to pass through a man-for-man Newco press.  The first chance of the game fell to Ryan Kent, who ghosted past Anthony Ralston but did not make a clean contact on the cross, his effort drifted wide.

Maeda failed to make an impact with his first two crosses from the left but his third was drilled into the six-yard box.  TV replays showed Borna Barisic repeatedly check over his shoulder for an attack by Jota, but the Portuguese only had eyes for the cross, which he converted without too much trouble from the Newco left back, who will now be familiar with Celtic wingers running from behind him to score.

Newco took control of the game after the interval until Giorgos Giakoumakis and Nir Bitton replaced Matt O’Riley and Kyogo on the hour.  In the minutes that followed, Celtic were on top, but could not solidify their lead.  That period ended when Newco strung seven passes together inside the Celtic half that released Sakala with a clear shot at goal inside the box, which he finished well.

With home advantage and a significantly lighter playing schedule, you may have expected Celtic to finish the game the stronger, but the opposite was true.  Sakala hit the post and had another great chance as Newco piled forward looking for a goal that would keep their title chances alive.

It was a great game of football but by no means a classic Celtic performance.  Still, the result ensured the league title will return to Celtic Park for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

Couple of thoughts on separate topics If I may ….

Ange won’t drop Reo Hatate. That would be the easy path.

Like Starfelt early in the season, when he was struggling badly, the manager simply told home this is the way, deal with it.

    And he did.

    And became mentally stronger.

And is now playing very well for us.

With a good rest and more coaching (Reo has not been a professional footballer very long) I expect the same from Hatate next season.

Speaking of next season, Celtic Park is first up for a league match versus Old Firm FC.

Opportunity for us to set the tone re ticket allocations.

If Old Firm FC do not take sufficient corporate responsibility (what are the odds) then, IMHO, two possible paths.

    1. ZERO tickets OR

    2. 700 tickets at £1,429 per ticket with additional revenue … minus costs of

    vandalism

    increased stewarding

    enhanced security

    facial recognition

dedicated website for images of offenders

    funds for crimestoppers …

… going to the Celtic Foundation.

  2. its only a couple weeks since our players were bombarded with coins and other items when they went over to thank our fans for their support and yet we still allowed them access to our park, dearie me.

When are people going to get it into their heads that it is strictly against SPFL rules for any club to refuse to allocate a section of their stadium for visiting supporters?

Always puzzles me why the Celtic joke PR Department don’t immediately publish photographs of the damaged seats, wrecked toilets, broken bottles and general detritus left by the bigot scum. Get our punches in early! Our spineless Board always allows the Hun to dictate the narrative.

Rangers and Celtic both did it because Covid restrictions were in place and it was done to minimise travel.

Here is an extract feom the SPFL Rules & Regulations:

The Home club must make provision for the admission of such reasonable number of visiting supporters at every home League Match and Play-Off Match as may be agreed in advance with the Visiting Club.

So it is defined as a “reasonable number” rather than a percentage of capacity.

good catch mac, but no determination of the percentage or the number, just an expectation that “a reasonable amount are given.

  10. Big Georges Fan Club - Hail, Hail, Wee Oscar on

CELTIC MAC – thanks for that – very interesting.

As written, there is sufficient discretion (in rules 126-128) for a figure of zero away fans to be agreed between the clubs or, failing that, for the Board to issue a binding decision that zero away fans are to be admitted (as long as the home club allocates a sufficient discrete space to host that agreed number).

Not necessarily a sensible interpretation of the rules, or their intention, but that’s what happens with imprecisely drafted (possibly deliberately-so) regulations.

Rangers cut Celtic ticket allocation to 800

Rangers have reduced the ticket allocation given to Celtic fans by over 6,000 seats after announcing record season ticket renewals.

The Ibrox club will accommodate supporters of the Parkhead club, along with all other opposition fans, in the corner between the Broomloan and Sandy Jardine Stands.

The club said that over 40,000 fans had renewed their season tickets following the appointment of Steven Gerrard as manager.

A club statement said tickets for the Broomloan Stand would now be offered for sale to new season ticket holders.

Rangers fans have previously petitioned the Rangers board for the removal of rival supporters from the Broomloan Road stand with over 5,000 taking part in a survey.

The poll overwhelmingly backed the cutting of Celtic’s ticket allocation.

A club statement said: “Our supporters will always come first and as many of them as practically possible must be accommodated.

“That is why the Club has decided on an overall increase in the total number of season tickets available to our supporters to what will be a historical record. A further announcement on the final new ticket allocation will shortly be made available on the Club’s website.

“An unfortunate consequence of putting our supporters first is that this increased demand negatively impacts on the number of tickets which will be allocated to visiting teams. This means all visiting fans will now be situated in the corner between the Broomloan and Sandy Jardine Stands.

“We believe that this is the best possible outcome after considering the unprecedented levels of support from Rangers fans.”

Celtic issued a swift response indicating that they will follow suit when Rangers visit Parkhead.

A statement on the Scottish champions’ website read: “An unprecedented double treble and historic season for the club has led to a phenomenal level of demand from supporters to be part of Celtic.

“We are happy to reciprocate in terms of ticket allocation, something which will give us the opportunity to meet this huge demand to visit Celtic Park.”

Respectfully disagree. If we think there is a danger we state it and give the feck all.

What do u think would happen if Celtic took that stance ?

Then they would be breaking the rules and would be sanctioned.

Anyway, I was merely pointing out the rules. I did not offer an opinion on it so not sure what you’re disagreeing with.

For what it’s worth, I believe there will soon come a time when Police Scotland will enforce a ban on away supporters at SPFL games between Celtic and Rangers.

As luck would have it, Vale are away to the leaders Exeter in the final game. Exeter are only 1 point ahead of Forest Green Rovers, so will be going all out to be Champions.

  17. Most people seem to agree Hatate is off form. Most people rightly claim that we trust in Ange.

Ange puts out the best team he thinks is available so it would suggest he has less faith in the other midfield options than Hatate.

Clearly, this is an area we’ll need to strengthen as it looks like McCarthy and Guci might be far from the picture.

So for Gerrads first season pre-covid, they did that, they announced it and sold the broomloan as season tickets before any agreement with Celtic, they did what they wanted, 700 only offered, celtic reciprocated at the next fixture.

Use of the word “reasonable” and of the phrase “as may be agreed” in 127 suggests that Celtic could refuse to allocate any tickets to visiting supporters. However, in such circumstances, which I believe could be justified, (recent behaviour of said fans at Ibrox/inherent difficulties of providing for 800 visiting supporters) “the number of visiting supporters shall be determined by the (SPFL) Board. Said Board would then be on record as having overruled the Celtic Board, and, I believe, open themselves up to potential liability.

Hope you are right, they offer nothing to the ‘game atmosphere’ apart from what we expect from them. They are too dangerous and its too expensive anywsy moreover I think the police would be delighted at policing home only stadiums on both sides

  22. In my opinion they got wind that something serious had happened, they get ahead of the story and try to smear Celtic with allegations of hate crimes racism and attacking disabled supporters, job done on their part.

Celtic win first Glasgow derby of the season.

Beautiful Sunday song sung across the support as song is played over the tannoy at Celtic Park (after the match). First time this has happened, and song is now recognised as part of the Celtic repertoire.

Celtic dominant, clear winners should have won by more. Not converting enough of our chances, the woodwork was the Sevco man of the match (if not the referee).

Celtic now 4pts in front of Sevco, but Hearts on top with 12 from 12pts so far.

First game with new allocations, following Sevco slashing Celtic away fans to 800 at Ibrox, so Celtic now only sell 800 away tickets to Huns.

That awkward moment when Sevco fans signed a petition to reduce Celtic’s tickets at Ibrox because they can’t stand seeing 8000 Celtic fans celebrating at Ibrox….then get locked in to watch 59k celebrating instead as Celtic win.

First match between Rodgers and Stevie Gerrard (Sevco manager) (formerly manager and player at Liverpool respectively)

Stevie G whinging: “If we’d have lost to a moment of class or brilliance, I’d handle it but the referee has cost us.” He was wrong, and even arch Hun Kris Boyd on Sky Sports said it wasn’t a foul that led to the Celtic goal. Sky’s expert referee said no foul to Sevco, but really should have been foul to Celtic.

Ntcham got POTM but Boyata ran him close. No coincidence since his return we’ve kept 3 clean sheets & look solid at the back. Boyata was immense. He’s what we’ve missed. Won EVERYTHING in the air. Collosus.

New Sevco Manager is Stevie Gerrard who was a player for Brendan Rodgers at Liverpool, with Stevie Gerrard losing them the league title with a silly slip at the end. Some say there are tensions between the two, others say otherwise. This will be interesting.

Upto Half-time: Edouard 1 challenge = yellow card Brown 1 challenge = yellow card Lafferty 6/7 fouls = talking to Morelos 4/5 fouls 2 handball = talking to; bias to Sevco?

Alan McGregor Sevco goalie should have been red carded for boot into Ajer.

UPDATE: Allan McGregor was neither charged or investigated for the boot on Ajer. An absolute disgrace.

Five people have been injured trying to get into Sunday’s Old Firm game at Celtic Park.

One was taken to hospital after falling from a wall and others were treated at the scene before going into the match. Celtic fans said some supporters were forced to climb over a high fence to escape a crush, which they claim was caused by the stadium entry points being changed. Police and Celtic FC said they would be reviewing their procedures. This could have been far more dangerous than even it was.
