Celtic do enough to ensure return of league title

398

Having been ahead only to be pegged back for the second time in a fortnight against Newco, there was a deflated feel inside Celtic Park at the end of the game yesterday.  After taking the lead through a Daizen Maeda – Jota combination, Celtic created enough chances to put the game out of sight.  They didn’t.

Newco equalised with the best move of the game and thereafter had a hatful of opportunities to win the game and cut the deficit at the top of the table.  They also failed in this objective.  Celtic remain six points clear with three games remaining, it is now only a matter of when, not if, they will win back their title.

Just as at Hampden last month, Celtic opened poorly, unable to pass through a man-for-man Newco press.  The first chance of the game fell to Ryan Kent, who ghosted past Anthony Ralston but did not make a clean contact on the cross, his effort drifted wide.

Maeda failed to make an impact with his first two crosses from the left but his third was drilled into the six-yard box.  TV replays showed Borna Barisic repeatedly check over his shoulder for an attack by Jota, but the Portuguese only had eyes for the cross, which he converted without too much trouble from the Newco left back, who will now be familiar with Celtic wingers running from behind him to score.

Newco took control of the game after the interval until Giorgos Giakoumakis and Nir Bitton replaced Matt O’Riley and Kyogo on the hour.  In the minutes that followed, Celtic were on top, but could not solidify their lead.  That period ended when Newco strung seven passes together inside the Celtic half that released Sakala with a clear shot at goal inside the box, which he finished well.

With home advantage and a significantly lighter playing schedule, you may have expected Celtic to finish the game the stronger, but the opposite was true.  Sakala hit the post and had another great chance as Newco piled forward looking for a goal that would keep their title chances alive.

It was a great game of football but by no means a classic Celtic performance.  Still, the result ensured the league title will return to Celtic Park for the 10th time in 11 seasons.

Leipzig taking lad with yellow card off, just in case. Sub played against Huns. No attempts at goal in 33 minutes by Leipzig.

Play like this at the bigotdome, and they are toast.

Jaun Mata contract up,ask him if he wants a 1 year deal to play in the Champions League…

Leipzig score with Nkuke solo effort. Scored from roughly the same position he badly missed against Huns.

Nkunku allowed to run by Borussia. Bassey or Goldson would have decked him in a heartbeat.

I fear that you are trying too hard to prove how limited you really are.

We are more than the SPL — to leave out our exploits in Europe to try and prove half a point is not where your analysis needs to be.

That Fulham mauling of 6th place Luton gives Middlesboro and Millwall hope that they can leapfrog Luton in the last league game.

    Safety is paramount. Full stop.

The safety of our fans must be prioritised over an ambiguous rule book.

Give the huns f@ck all tickets in the future.

    ——-

Point made – but can you have two rule-books; one for the ‘big two’, and one for the rest? A precedence is then set for other non-safety situations. The other 40 clubs may rightly ask: “why change the rules for forty-two when the problem lies with only two? They could vote against and/or ask for a judicial review.

Of course, as Tom McLaughlin stated earlier, perhaps the police will step in. Only thing I would say is that there have many more serious incidents/times in the past. Our threshold for being shocked has dropped dramatically – not a judgement, just a sign of the times.

These ‘disruptions’ still happen at times in some parts of Europe, but are conspicuous by their absence in the EPL….wonder why?

Usually incidents between rival fans take place away from the stadium. This season where away fans have been allowed, incidents have happened inside the stadium. There can be no denying that the tensions between rival supporters at these games have intesified and if in-stadium violence continues unabated, I can see Police Scotland calling a halt to admitting away fans indefinitely.

There is no dog and there is no hunt. Your metaphors just muddy your reasons, which remain unexplained

I fear that you are trying too hard to prove how limited you really are.

Does that sentence make any sense to you at any level? Why would anyone seek to do that? And , more pertinently, why would anyone imagine that someone is trying to do that? I am comfortable enough in my skin to just make my argument and put it out there for agreement, modification or refutation. What does not impress is a response of insult without answer.

We are more than the SPL — to leave out our exploits in Europe to try and prove half a point is not where your analysis needs to be.

Read your original point and my reply again. No one omitted anything. I responded to your post within the same terms that you made it. You did not mention Europe so I did not introduce it as a distraction in my reply.

You introduced it in your subsequent reply to me and you, then, called it your main point even though you hadn’t made it previously in the exchange.

Between shifting sands and insults it becomes a bit tiresome and infantile to continue or even start a debate with you.

Sorry, I meant to add the other ‘solution’ – that the agreed allocation be restricted to opposing club officials in the main stand.

No doubt this would be ‘jumped on’ as a carve-up by the ‘suits’.

  11. A Liepzig defeat tonight will have all their eggs in the Europa basket to ensure CL football next season. I don’t see that as a problem.

Leipzig now pushing hard for an equalizer. They have been hit twice on the break by Monchengladbach and are leaving themselves open to it.

  13. IniquitousIV on

Nkunku decked in box. No penalty. Stindl ( superb player ) for Borussia is the main threat for home team.

    Red card for Borussia defender.

Eintracht, who will contest the other Eoropa semi, down 2-0 to Leverkusen.

  15. Celtic Manager, Ange Postecoglou said: “I was very keen for Mark to join the Club and clearly I am delighted that he has accepted this important role and that we have been able to bring him to Celtic.

“Mark is someone who I worked closely with throughout my four years at Marinos, through which time we developed great trust and an excellent working relationship. He knows the way I like to work, the way my teams play and the particular player profile which this requires.”

  16. Ref CCV and signing for us.

His comments last night were bland and he was give. Plenty of chance to display a bind or desire to engage with the clubs and / or fans and he chose not to.

He simply said it was the biggest club and crowd he had played in front of and the biggest stage so far and he appreciated that. Despite the audience baying for some affirmation of his desire / intent to stay and despite the compère even leading strongly with his questioning CCV did not even give a sound bite which indicated desire to stay.

Jota by comparison was far more effusive and positive about the fans and passion his body language was very different. He genuinely seemed to be loving it.

Of course Hart and took it to another level in endorsing the Ange way and telling all how much of a new lease of life it has given him.

    AN DUN

Leipzig have a lot of eggs in this basket ( race for 4th ), and look surprisingly ineffective. If I were the manager, I would take Nkunku off, because he is their main threat, and he is being repeatedly clattered.

This is the first time I have watched Leipzig this season, and have to say I am disappointed. Hard to see how they beat Atalanta and Real Sociedad away.

If this result holds, that’s 2 defeats and a very late home winner against the Huns in their last 3 games. Current form is poor.

Scottish players (or players playing in Scotland) worth a look? Dylan Levitt, at Dundee Utd? For the midfield? Man Utd youth system since forever, Wales international, fantastic engine, amazing passing stats (and stats in general), a handy habit of picking up goals, could release CalMac to play further forward, and he’s only 21. Surely worth a look at least.

If an EPL team comes in for him with the money Spurs would want from them i think he would wish to play in the EPL. In my opinion i don’t think he would make it,he was on loan to six English teams before us.

We will see shortly………hope he stays.

Mark Lawwell – whether or not he is Peter Lawwell’s son should be immaterial if he’s good. I’ve posted on here before that, as per a decent source, Ange Postecoglou was Peter Lawwell’s first choice as manager; Eddie Howe was Dermot Desmond’s preferred candidate.
