Celtic exploit Wednesday collapse, a morality tale in two players

725

Celtic’s pillage of Yorkshire’s young talent continued yesterday with the arrival of 20-year-old Dutch player Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday.  Osaze is a central defender and arrives a few days after fellow Wednesday graduate, midfielder Liam Shaw.

Sheffield Wednesday are in turmoil.  Their most recent published accounts, to June 2019, showed a trading loss of £17m on a turnover of £22.8m – horrendous, but an improvement on the previous year’s trading loss of £23.7m.  They sold Hillsborough for £38m during season 2018-19, switched the accounts to a £19m profit, but they are now a club without a stadium-sized asset on the balance sheet.

Since then, a bad situation has gotten considerably worse.  Despite being the biggest team in the Championship by some margin, the finished bottom of the table in May; at least one season of third tier football awaits.

In short, Osaze and Liam may read about Celtic’s supposed turmoil last season and kick into the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch:

“You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t’ mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home Peter Lawwell would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.”  I’m pretty sure that’s how I remember it.

Football is a zero sum game and where one giant club disintegrates, others see opportunity.  Young players with talent and options will not stay.

Celtic were able to use the arbitrage permitted to them with not being bound by transfer rules between two FA member clubs.  That money, perhaps in the region of £5m a piece for Shaw and Urhoghide, went on wage offers outbidding clubs from England.  It’s a rerun of the Dembele deal from four years ago.

I have been saying for years the Championship is the most dysfunctional league in the world.  It also causes Scottish Premiership clubs more trouble than any other.  Where Wednesday have gone, others will follow.  It is a morality tale in the making.

    Very positive but intimidating bloke”

I would say that to be a good teacher or a good coach certain qualities are necessary.. The two mentioned by SFTB are essential.

Thanks for posting that clip of Ange Postecoglou’s training session. I really like what I am hearing and seeing. For me 4 things really comes across well:

    1) He has a no-nonsense offensive style of football he wants us to play,

    2) He will not tolerate shirking in any shape or form and wants EVERY player in the team to ALWAYS be on the move,

    3) He really encourages his players to do well, and

    4) He is very clearly THE BOSS and the players are doing as he asks.

Games are won on a number of factors; skill/talent, teamwork, tactics, discipline, bravery, commitment, confidence, fitness and the on-field implementation of what happens on the training field etc. It is very early days I know, but I for one am licking my lips in anticipation of where this new regime of Dom and Ange might take us… 😊 🍀

Take Care, Keep Safe, God Bless and Hail Hail! 😊 🍀

    Yours in Celtic, 🍀

  6. Really hope we can bring Aaron Mooy to Celtic Park. Seen him quite a few times at Huddersfield – he’s a top player – apart from his obvious football ability, he will add confidence & professionalism to the squad. It will be an early & welcome boost for Ange🤞

  7. The most important talent a coach could have is to make sure that players can be equally comfortable kicking with both feet.

Positive and intimidating come well down the qualities required.

Kitalba I troduced me to Macjay in Brisbane when Tony Mowbray brought Celtic on tour. An absolute gentleman and great company. Saddened to hear of his passing.

Apologies if I got it wrong about Leigh Griffiths’ contract. For some reason I thought it was a 1-year extension option uptake.

    —-

Agree 100% with your comments & analysis – “bravery & committment” should be the absolute minimum offering when you play for Celtic – it was missing completely last season.

“If you go to your death rather than do everything you might to

prevent what is happening, you are merely committing suicide and

trying to make yourself feel better

    about it”.

We committed suicide on the field of play last season….and were undermined by authority off it.

Ange? An Aussie from a Greek family, bearing gifts – that’ll do for me.

  10. !!bada bing!!

Thanks for posting that link, very impressed with Ange’s hands on and positive approach to the session.

Lets make sure he has a decent squad of players to work with.

You’d have hoped that professional footballers, who play football practically every day could use both feet, I remember Bob Crampsey highlighting he thought Brattbak had an eye foot coordination thing going on, but still couldn’t understand why a professional footballer, who practices all the time, couldn’t trap a ball.

  12. Go Tell the Spartim

You have probably noticed just how often a player (professional, 100 grand a week,) cant even use two eyes never mind two feet.

We now have a game where managerial schools teach their pupils to squeeze players’ talents to fit their jigsaw.. The great coaches made the most of the players’ abilities. and redrew the ipcture on the box.

The first thing they looked for was a player whose basic abilities included being bipedal!

Anyway, that’s me done.. Bye all.

Impressed watching Ange’s mic’d up training session . Even just the fact that he seems to know all the players names already!

  14. A wise mhan said yesterday that our Blog names de humanise us .

It’s easy to get annoyed & angry at the Posts of a JHB or a Tontine Tim etc.

However behind the monikers are normal people the overwhelming majority of, are fellow Celtic Supporters.

Most of the time Macjay was on here we argued, mostly on Social & Political issues, it is fair to say I didn’t like Macjay, and I suspect Macjay didn’t like me.

Then today I read Macjay has died, and I also learn the name behind the moniker.

    So my final post,

John, May you Rest in Eternal Peace at Gods right hand. I will pray for you, maybe you might pray for me too.

    Loved this line from today…👌

  16. If you keep religion and politics out of the posts i think we would all get along.

Don’t know why anyone would not like TONTINE TIM.

  17. Just watched first part of Ange training session , first thought what a great job being a professional football manager…

I guess at the start big Ange will focus on tempo and movement, all the tactical flim flam will be kept under wraps and we’ll see that develop in time …..

I’ve had enough of Bet 365, I’m taking out my kitty (which is not a great deal, but about £80 profit from a start of £10). Robbin Barstewards…

  21. Are the planet’s aligning for England?

France, Germany and Portugal are out.

    Spain into extra time.

Italy or Belgium will go out tonight.

    The final is at Wembley.

    If England win this.

    Hold onto your butts.

  22. Never met Macjay but had one or two debates with him when I posted on a more regular basis. Like most on here we didn’t always agree.

When we beat Motherwell to win the double treble he posted he was going to watch the match in Cheers, Sydney. My daughter was also heading there with her friend so I asked her to seek him out and buy him a beer from me.

She found him and his son but he wouldn’t take the drink, in fact he insisted on buying them one instead.

As I said, never met him but my daughter did and assured me he was a gentleman.

So sorry to hear of his passing.

    RIP Macjay

  23. So very sorry to hear the sad news that MacJay has passed away. I enjoyed reading his posts which I didn’t always agree with and felt that he was a loss to the blog when he stopped posting.

RIP MacJay and condolences to the family. 🙏

I’m with you take the getting coached out of you, in all sports. The true greats take it upon themselves to get better at things they’re not as good at. I think if M Jordan getting criticised for all the points he scored but the Bulls never won playoffs, next year he won defensive player of the year.

If I was good at golf and needed a coach I’d go for butch Harmon he works with the swing you’ve got and wouldn’t try and change it. You just know that Matthew Wolf would have that swing binned by Scottish golf
