Celtic exploit Wednesday collapse, a morality tale in two players

Celtic’s pillage of Yorkshire’s young talent continued yesterday with the arrival of 20-year-old Dutch player Osaze Urhoghide from Sheffield Wednesday.  Osaze is a central defender and arrives a few days after fellow Wednesday graduate, midfielder Liam Shaw.

Sheffield Wednesday are in turmoil.  Their most recent published accounts, to June 2019, showed a trading loss of £17m on a turnover of £22.8m – horrendous, but an improvement on the previous year’s trading loss of £23.7m.  They sold Hillsborough for £38m during season 2018-19, switched the accounts to a £19m profit, but they are now a club without a stadium-sized asset on the balance sheet.

Since then, a bad situation has gotten considerably worse.  Despite being the biggest team in the Championship by some margin, the finished bottom of the table in May; at least one season of third tier football awaits.

In short, Osaze and Liam may read about Celtic’s supposed turmoil last season and kick into the Monty Python Four Yorkshiremen sketch:

“You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t’ mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home Peter Lawwell would thrash us to sleep wi’ his belt.”  I’m pretty sure that’s how I remember it.

Football is a zero sum game and where one giant club disintegrates, others see opportunity.  Young players with talent and options will not stay.

Celtic were able to use the arbitrage permitted to them with not being bound by transfer rules between two FA member clubs.  That money, perhaps in the region of £5m a piece for Shaw and Urhoghide, went on wage offers outbidding clubs from England.  It’s a rerun of the Dembele deal from four years ago.

I have been saying for years the Championship is the most dysfunctional league in the world.  It also causes Scottish Premiership clubs more trouble than any other.  Where Wednesday have gone, others will follow.  It is a morality tale in the making.

    I’ve noticed that a Greenock born rock star has had a few mentions, and rightly so.

     

    However this my own personal favourite Aussie band, I’m pretty sure I will be advised why the title of the song is inappropriate.

    I probably would have gone for Sunderland’s Wyke before handing Griff a contract, reduced terms or not, he can not be relied on.

    Wouldn’t have offered Griifiths a new contract but seriously have you seen Wyke play for Sunderland?

     

     

    He makes Ollie McBurnie look like Robert Lewandowski. Absolute donkey who should be nowhere near Celtic Park.

    With regard to Osaze’s moniker, I should imagine that there will be many shouts this season along the lines of;

    And hopefully

    Italy of Maldivian, Baresi and co.Big differences I noted were the speed into the tackle, the availability to give and receive a pass and most of all their fantastic fitness. Shame about the time wasting but that’s not coached, that’s in their genes.

    Wyke is the new Cillian Sheridan…..be as well going for Cosgrove who Birmingham City are trying to get shot of,but there is much better out there

    Not been on this site for several months, and apologies if this has already been asked, but are the two lads from Sheffield Wednesday first team contenders?

     

    I had assumed they would maybe play 15+/- games, but I infer from P67’s article that allowing for adjustments we should expect them to be holding down first 11 spots by Xmas

    Wykes scored 31 goals last season, not for me not good enough for Celtic. But a donkey does not score 31 goals in any league. As for Cillian Sheridan he came through the youth system at celtic I’m sure so where is the comparison?

    When McJay who was a constant on here stopped phosting it wisnae noticed right away as can happen.

     

     

    Next we find out that not only is he no longer with us but was back hame living with his son and was actually socializing in Clydebank.

     

     

    Makes me think that he had taken ill and after finding out he was losing the fight went back hame tae where it all started for him.

    Thanks TH, interesting. Can you recall when City TV with Alf DiBlasi had Dutch games with an English commentary on a Saturday afternoon, first time I ever saw Henke and wee Regi Stinker.

    Mentioned to my mates when we bought him that he was a good player(understatement),up to the Celtic club Henke comes of the bench pass to Chick Charnley……goal………..you should have seen the looks i got but as we all know it ended well.
