Celtic face Newco amid their onerous load

182

The look on Karamoko Dembele’s face!  He had just been shoved, two handed, to the ground by a Dundee United defender, who made no attempt to play the ball or do anything apart from shove Karamoko, inside the box.  If ever there was a ‘Welcome to Celtic’ moment for a young player, this was it.

Like many spectators, I was unsure what the current handball rule was when the ball struck Giorgos Giakoumakis arm before being turned in by Daizen Maeda, but I am not a referee.  John Beaton is.  The goal should have stood, the Karamoko incident should have been a penalty and a comfortable 0-3 Celtic win should have been a landmark statement of intent.

The goals John Beaton allowed to stand were scrappy.  Two deflections and a fumble by a usually reliable keeper, not that this mattered.  Celtic dominated play, United were unable to craft a chance worthy of the name.

We will face Newco in the semi-final at Hampden on Sunday 17 April.  Newco are almost certain to play a Europa League quarter-final second leg on 14 April.  We have a league game at Ibrox on 3 April and it is likely we will face Newco again at Celtic Park before the end of that month.

Celtic will have a week to prepare for each game.  Newco have the prospect of two major European ties and three games against Celtic inside a month, an onerous load.  The hard work is still to be done, but we are well placed.

  1. Many thanks for confirming there was indeed a NAPs chat on previous threads. I’m not going mad then!

Like Dixie, I never partook though I oft times borrowed some of the expertise on show.

Good luck to all who are looking in on Cheltenham.

From earlier, yes there was a wee betting fraternity a while back, I know OldTim67 was part of it, not too sure about the others offhand. And then of course there was WITS, who was guaranteed to give ye a bum steer. Got the odd winner of course, never heard the end of it, it’s a gamblers thing.

In 2016, a UK parliament law gave the authorities power to investigate criminals and oligarchs with Unexplained Wealth (UW). To date it has brought one prosecution. It failed. Apparently, that failure hinges on the UWO budget. It operates on a shoestring while the Oligarchs’ blood money buys up the best lawyers in Britain.

Maybe they payed Hesgoal off as legal and IT solutions failed

  12. Watching Ajax – Benfica to see what we must aspire to if we go directly into the Group Stage of the CL. Terrific football match so far. Both teams very direct, with lots of skill, movement and speed on display, and immediately from kick off. Lots of innovation and variation at corners.

None of this aimless sideways passing stuff for these teams. You also don’t see teams losing possession at throw ins, just really basic stuff that we need to address. Against Dundee Utd, Taylor was just throwing it up the line, ‘ a hope for the best tactic.’ Doesn’t work at CL level.

Our most crucial need is speed, which covers a multitude of sins. Some defenders and midfield players with Kyogo or Virgil level speed or near it would be on my wanted list. We have seen this season how devastating Kyogo’s speed has been this season. Imagine we had 3 or 4 more with that pace!

Ah, well, it’s good to dream.

Nonsense statement from Hesgoal. After years of showing games, they suddenly have a conscience? I think they have been threatened with lawsuits. This will enable the EPL and UEFA to gouge out the maximum income from ‘legal’ sources.

I thought an English judge had ruled in favour of a pub owner that showing any game tale delayed by 60 seconds or so was not ‘live’, and could lawfully be shown?

  14. Vale 1-1 at halftime which is about right – a feisty game.

Sky is always delayed by a few seconds in case they need to cut the feed if there’s an incident.

    So that’s not live

For a bit of context Benfica are €150m in debt, have a wage bill twice the size of ours, running at a big loss without big player trading profits. Access to the Portuguese speaking market for talent to flip, a proven record of selling to top European clubs. €600m profit in the last ten years

They also sold their ground for €100m to the major shareholder group who own less shares than DD does in Celtic. Otherwise they’re €250m in debt.

I wonder how we’d react if DD owned Celtic Park?

  17. I wonder if the word `oligarch` has been used more often in the UK media than it was in the previous century?

I also wonder why we don`t use the word for `our` billionaires?

    Cheerio for now.

  18. I wonder if Hesgoal’s decision to stop showing, first EPL matches, and now UEFA games is in some way connected to the war in Ukraine related sanctions that are having an impact far beyond that conflict. Certainly seems to have happened around the same time, and we know the EPL withdrew rights from Russia and China blocked broadcasts due to pro Ukraine displays by EPL teams. The Saudis promised to stop streaming EPL in order to buy Newcastle Utd and the middle east has been home to much of the so called illegal streams, I say so called, because I’m suspicious of the knowing involvement of Sky broadcasts reaching a bigger audience for its advertisers, who otherwise quite simply will not watch the EPL. The like of me for example. Same for UEFA, no interest in paying for any games since ITV stopped showing them. No way of knowing for sure of course, but proper pirates don’t always play by the rules, and Hesgoal seem to well established to be proper pirates.

I don’t dispute any of the points you make about Benfica. I would be interested to hear what you think we should change for next season to avoid the chances of some team like PSG taking 12 off us in 2 games? This season, we have already been cannon fodder for a wee team from beyond the Arctic Circle in the third tier Euro competition. It’s a huge leap to the Group Stage of the CL. I don’t dream of qualifying from the CLGroup. I just don’t want us to be humiliated.

  20. sceptical citizen on

How many would PSG score against the Livi bus bearing in mind that in Livi’s last game v Celtic, Livi opened up and got a tanking, Marvin Barclay was on the media saying that, “Rogic was unplayable”, which was either an honest assessment, or mind games for when Celtic next play Livi????

  21. INIQUITOUSIV on 15TH MARCH 2022 9:14 PM

PSG took 12 off the invincibles with Rodgers in charge, the best Celtic team and manager in a long time. It’s football, these days.

I don’t have any answers for next season, it’s going to come too soon for us to avoid at least a couple of doings, probably more. I’d much rather we played in the Europa League as a competition.

  22. I think with Ange in charge and some very good recruitment in the summer and a bit of luck for a change we stand a chance of not being humiliated, however.

Massive Celtic rumour emerges about Kyogo’s fitness

    ________________________________________________________

Kyogo Furuhashi has arguably been Celtic’s best signing in a long, long time and he was one of the best players in Scotland before picking up a long-term injury in December, which has kept him out of action since then. And it is safe to say that the fans will be hoping to see him back in action as soon as possible, as the Hoops head towards one of the toughest phases of their season.

Kyogo was originally injured in Celtic’s last Europa League group stage game against Real Betis. And to be honest, it was a mistake on the part of Ange Postecoglou to bring him on that day, with nothing riding on the result.

He would return later in the month despite not being 100 per cent and incredibly, scored a brace in the Scottish League Cup final against Hibernian to guide Celtic to the trophy.

Kyogo would pick up an injury just a week later though, in the last game before the winter break, and has been out of action since then. But, some interesting rumours are doing the rounds on social media now.

Rumours have been doing the rounds today on social media that Kyogo has been running and sprinting at Lennoxtown. That would suggest that he is slowly but surely edging closer to fitness.

There have been suggestions that Kyogo could be fit enough to feature in a couple of weeks, which means that there is hope that he could face the Rangers in April.

It remains to be seen how things unfold in that regard but it must be said that Celtic must give Kyogo all the time that he needs to get fully fit before putting him back on the pitch. They cannot afford to see the Japanese star pick up another injury this season.

Maybe we should consider being a bit more pragmatic ( thinking back to the days of Kennedy and Marshall vs Barcelona ) for selected games? And dare I say it, park the bus and try to play on the counter when we are clearly overmatched? I was really surprised that Rodgers, after PSG demolished us 5-0 at home, made no adjustments for the away tie. He didn’t even seem to care.

  25. Unforunately got the covid virus on sunday.
