Celtic fans impact in Liberia

capture-20170530-221909Mary’s Meals were in touch with photographs and information from the Sean Devereux Primary School, Montserrado County, Liberia, the seventh school we have funded through Mary’s Meals. We started to raise money for this school at Christmas. Each school day, 253 pupils are fed a vitamin-enriched meal, paid for by you.

Liberia has chronic problems, exacerbated by the recent Ebola outbreak. Only 38% of primary aged children attend school, largely as a consequence of the economic necessity to work in order to eat. The meals you provide address this central problem, but importantly, it ensures children attend school for what is often their only daily meal. This access to education provides life chances which carry decades worth of benefits.

Daniel Folley, deputy head of Sean Devereux Primary, said, “The school’s population has increased [because of the Mary’s Meals kitchen], and academic performance is at a peak. Hunger used to rive children down, when teachers used to speak, they were not paying attention. Now they are able to learn more.”

In 15 years Mary’s Meals has grown from a shed in Scotland into a force which feeds over 1.2 million children each day. As they work in the poorest areas, your money goes far. It costs an average of just £13.90 to feed a child for an entire year.

The other big reason we like Mary’s Meals is that 93% of funds raised reaches the recipient. The organisation runs on just a 7% overhead, which is exceptional in the aid sector.

Online communities get a bad press, but you share this blog with a lot of great people.  See below.  This is how it feels to be Celtic!

  1. Maybe, the Johnny Hayes stuff……

    is the first indicator that….

Mr Rodgers is about to suffer from….

    second season syndrome…..?

Or, maybe, JH has the unlocked ingredients….

that, only Mr Rodgers can…..unlock ?

    Anyway,…..

  5. Just back from holiday so sorry if this has been asked and answered since trebles day, never got on to cqn much over in Spain due to rubbishy tinternet , was just wondering , the Celtic fans obviosly knocked back the sfa offer of a tiffo display, was it so we did not want to be seen in promoting an sfa message, or some other, probably justified reason.

Proprietors of Hampden wanted to know the content of the display and the Celtic supporters refused to tell them. Aberdeen fans were happy to let them know.

Thanks for that, I thought it was the sfa that where paying for the display for both sets of fans , never knew we had our own message to show, so does that mean our display was refused to be set up,what were the sfa scared of, and does anybody know what it was.

Bern, the Green Brigade organised a Corteo from the Saltmarket up to Hampden.

The polis diid not want the Corteo to go ahead in light of ‘security issues’ following the tragic events in Manchester.

I was told that Celtic fans coming out of St Enoch’s subway station were asked by polis if they were going to the Corteo and if they were , it was cancelled , which was a lie.

The corteo went ahead with over ten polis vans and a dog van escorting them for ‘the supporters own safety’ going up Cathcart Road then onto Aikenhead Road.

The tifo that was planned for Saturday will be used for another game.

I’m disgusted at your celebratory triumphalism. Next you’ll be telling me you still celebrate Lisbon 67.

  12. CELTIC and a clutch of Dutch clubs are interested in ending Viktor Fischer’s time at Middlesbrough – after just one year.

Fischer has struggled to make an impact on Teesside since moving from Ajax in a £3.8m deal last July and relegation has heightened the chances of him leaving already.

The 22-year-old only made six starts in the Premier League for Middlesbrough and Aitor Karanka felt he had struggled to adapt to the English game.

There is every chance a second season at that level would have led to improved performances from the Denmark international.

But his Danish boss Age Hareide has already indicated that the forward must come up with a way of playing more matches or he will lose his place on the international stage.

Fischer has been regarded as one of his country’s brightest prospects but injuries during his time at Ajax prevented him from really living up to his billing.

It was hoped the move to the Premier League would have taken his game to the next level, but Karanka hardly used him and when he did he struggled to impress.

Relegation and a change of manager – even if Steve Agnew does succeed Karanka for the longer term which seems unlikely – means a change of approach over the summer and further tinkering.

And interest in players such as Fischer is likely to see them leave if the deal suits all parties, with Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers known to have admired him in the past.

Rodgers is understood to have kept an eye on him during his younger days and he could be a valuable addition to the Scottish champions’ ranks.

Celtic do not have plenty of cash to throw around despite winning the treble north of the border, but they are in a position to be able to go somewhere near to the £3.8m fee Middlesbrough paid last year.

Rodgers, who has also shown an interest in Sunderland’s Fabio Borini, would be looking to get him for less after his frustrating year, although interest from the Eredivisie could strengthen Middlesbrough’s arm.

Fischer only played half an hour as a substitute under Agnew after Karanka’s exit and he is waiting, like the rest of the squad, to learn who will be leading Middlesbrough during pre-season.

  13. Another point on that link to the Armstrong goal I posted…

Look how Celtic’s play pulled Aberdeen players out of position – Logan end up closing down Broonie in midfield. For all Aberdeen’s resilience last Saturday, Celtic pulled them out of shape persistently and wore them out. By the closing stages of the match there was only one winner in that game, even if it went to extra time.

MWD apologies again for the flagrant triumphalism…

    :)

Hayes has peaked, Christie could go onto greater things

    ========

In a crazy, short term, results driven business where we have 6 games coming up very shortly to earn CL football and a pot of £30m+, this is a great argument for getting Hayes on board, asap.

Thats not to say he’d be a guaranteed starter, but a good player to have around to take the place of GMS/Commons.

He puts real quality into the box(Beckham made a career out of doing this) and can score a goal.

Not a bad player to have around.

    HH

  15. If Jonny Hayes signs I’m sure his game will improve with the coaching he’ll get.

It’ll need to after that horrendous pass behind McLean that could’ve and should’ve been a tap in for 2-1. If he did that for Celtic at that stage of CL qualifier he’d a tough job turning the doubters.

  16. Davidopoulos on 1st June 2017 8:25 am

Definitely. Lightening fast and a great player at Ajax.

I think we can both agree he would be a better signing than Hayes.

Unfortunately story looks like an agent trying to get his player a move from Middlebrough, and who could blame him

    MIKE IN TORONTO -yesterday .

    Cycling in Sicily .

I won’t be here in September — I’ll be on holiday.

    Some ramblings –

Sicily is the biggest island in the Mediterranean . Some people are surprised re how big it is.. September should be blue skies and sunny . Likely to average high 20s / low 30s . If it rains it will monsoon . Monsoon might last 1hr or 24hrs . Rain will flood the roads etc !.

Are you organising the trip or you doing an organised cycling holiday.? . Most things of interest tend to be on the coast / near the coast . Much of the interior is harsh ,scorched rocky,, hilly , mountainous etc with not many people .

Sicilians tend to be crazy drivers . Take care on the roads . Cycling in cities like Palermo , Catania and Messina is not for the faint hearted . . Watch out for dogs running out of gardens and watch out for packs of “wild dogs ” in isolated areas / on the edge of small towns etc . – they are dogs which were abandoned , bred and multiplied..

Beautiful island .. Very much the periphery of Europe. Not very Italian . Many people speak hybrid Italian / Sicilian / local dialects . Great food .!

Anything specific -just ask ! .

    Enjoy !!!

Just returned to Aus after probably the most fantastic Celtic fortnight of my life. Started at the Pavilion with the Hartson and Sutton evening, flew to Lisbon the next morning with my old Dad and met up with John McCormick and his lovely wife Maureen at the Estadio Nacional where we also met up with Tom from Hamilton. Watched the Thistle game in O’GIlins in Lisbon and then back to Glasgow for the Joe Dodds commemoration service at St Convals Cemetery.

Sunday, trophy presentation day at Celtic Park with the old Man, Thursday, a re-run of the 67 Cup Final in Chandlers in Clydebank, Friday lunch with the Lisbon Lions, Saturday and the Cup Final followed by another monumental celebration at Chandlers and finally, Henrik v Lubo.

Thanks to all who made it possible and to those who shared it, not likely to be repeated again in my lifetime, memories will be long held.

Don’t care who wins the CL Final. My only hope is that it is a good game and the better team wins . I fear it might be a foul fest / dive fest. . Mad mental Inter fan old codger from down the valley really. surprised me by stating that he ” wouldn’t mind ” if Rube won.– his reasons? – Real are bigger cheats than Rube , the officiating re Real v Bayern turned his stomach. . Rube do their own cheating / Real and Barca are UEFA toyboys. . Grump grump.! That got him launching into a tirade about Real cheating Inter in the mid 60s .

    In other news –

I was just up at celtic park there as its “Relocations ” day.

I thought I would nip in , change my seat, and be back in like a half hour.

However, the queue is several hundred deep, snaking out the ticket office and around the pavements and on into the car park.

So if your going along be prepared.
