Celtic fans; the great enablers

388

Today’s blog has been prepared by the guys running the incredible Walk with Shay campaign, and has been approved by Shay’s family. Take a moment to read over it.

As Celtic fans, we are incredibly lucky that we have people doing good things in our name, people who make it easy for us to get involved in changing a life. We should be grateful we can play a small part in making a profound difference to a young life.

Here’s the article:

Many of you will already be aware of Shay McGinlay, the little 3-year-old Bhoy from Livingston who has Cerebral Palsy; here is Shay’s story:

“Hello, my name is Shay my story begins when I was born at 42 weeks weighing a healthy 7lb11oz. When I was born I was starved from oxygen for 40 minutes which led to me being brain damaged. I was transferred to neonatal intensive care unit at Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh where I was cooled with a cooling treatment to reduce swelling to my brain.

Hours and days passed that my mummy & daddy worried. They were told that I might not survive and to expect the worst. I spent 3 weeks in intensive care before being transferred back to St John’s children’s ward.

I stayed in the children’s ward for 7 weeks where I got stronger and into a stable routine to go home. I was discharged on 24th of August 2013 and got to go home with my mummy and daddy. I proved all the doctors wrong.

I have grown stronger since I have been home but I sometimes struggle to gain weight and have to have special high calorie milk to make sure I gain enough weight. I suffer from developmental delay which means I can’t sit up, talk, walk or play like other kids my age can. I receive physiotherapy and speech and language therapy due to my evolving quadriplegic cerebral palsy. I also suffer from epilepsy and suffer from seizures.

I am now in need of further treatment for my cerebral palsy which is not available on the NHS. Me and my mummy and daddy would like to ask for your continued support to help us raise funds for my therapy. This costs around £6000 per year and could help me eat, sit up and maybe even walk on my own in the future. I would love to be able to do these things and play with all my cousins and get to achieve as much as I can from living life with cerebral palsy…

A number of CQNers and friends have been working tirelessly since September 2014 to help raise money to support my ABR therapy via the sale of CQN badges and the fabulous Last Man Standing competition, which many of you I know have taken part, as well as other fundraising initiatives and donations. These efforts have raised a magnificent £10,500 towards my treatment.

Together with own family and friends fundraising, we have now raised enough to pay for the first two years’ treatment, and partially fund the third year’s treatment. I cannot thank you enough for helping me get this far.

The treatment to date has been very beneficial and this has helped to hold my head up better and develop part of a neck, but this is a very slow process. Please see my picture below.

shay-treatment

I am also eating and sleeping better, but recently l gave my parents a wee scare on holiday in Tenerife, and had a seizure, ending up in hospital for a couple of days. I had not had a seizure for two years. Luckily thanks to the kind doctors and nurses I was ok and managed to get home on time. Hospital food is rubbish in Spain too :-)

The third year’s treatment is due to commence in November 2016, and this is when I get my next assessment.  My mum and dad is also looking into alternative treatment and equipment that may be required to help give me achieve a better way of life and allow me to progress. One day, I hope to walk.  Thank you for walking with me so far!”

The campaign to support Shay has now been consolidated and formalised into a campaign called “WalkWithShay”.

walk-with-shay

The WalkWithShay campaign was launched two weeks ago on twitter and now has 867 followers. You can follow us @walkwithshay. We can also be contacted by email at above- walkwithshay@yahoo.com .  We will shortly set up a facebook page and will also keep you up to date across the football blogs, including CQN.

We are in the process of setting up a bank account.  We also have a crowdfunding account set up to allow us to accept credit card and overseas payments. You can also make normal donations to this account until the bank account is set up.

JustGiving: Walk with Shay

The campaign team have some genuinely unique Celtic memorabilia and these items will either be raffled or put to a suitable event to be auctioned. The team have managed to achieve the amazing feat of getting the last 11 Celtic Club Captains to sign 2 Tops with 1 of these being made available via a raffle (launch date of the raffle still to be announced) so that all supporters will have the opportunity to own such a unique item. These tops span 53 years of Celtic history.

In addition, a very kind CQNer has drawn all club captains in a fantastic black and white drawing.  You will therefore all get the chance to purchase a print of this very special drawing in time for Christmas.

Please follow @walkwithshay for all updates and news.

If you want to help us by donating a prize, running an event or simply wishing us well or making a donation, then drop us an email at walkwithshay@yahoo.com Please also do not forget that you can also join in on our Last Man Standing competition which will continue to support Shay. LMS9 starts in a few weeks’ time (once LMS8 is won!). Watch this space on CQN and twitter for further announcements.

Thank you and please help share our campaign.

Maybe if it is still an optional feature the re-introduction of the dustbin might lighten your load.

There are so many character traits deployed sub-persona on the site it is bound to cause angst if not outright anger. Posters baiting other posters to reply when not having the personal courtesy to respond to posts politely addressed to them whilst wetting their pants and jumping up and down demanding their public pound of arse flesh…

What the blog lacks is not decorum, it lacks courage. Courage of conviction and courage to listen and courage to question your own prejudices and courage to live life having made mistakes.

On the field if you screw up then the accepted redeemer is just hold your hand up and admit it.

On here it is lie low for a few hours, maybe at a push a couple of days, never apologise, after a couple of days their hubris needs a fix and then back they come and they paint their bigoted and ignorant prejudiced murals again, and again, and again, and if they can bait a few people with their bigoted and prejudiced narratives and agendas, wow… a bonus.

I too have just read back and deleted some posts from overnight, language.

  3. TRUMP.

Im going to assume that those on here telling the rest of us how wonderful Trump is and how more wonderful he’s gonna be are also Celtic fans ?

In the last couple of days MACJAY in particular has defended Trump by saying that folk on here and elsewhere are only listening to media opinions and stories of Trump and thereby , ( in other words we are all fools for believing the media ?), especially when and again NONE if us know Trump personally ?

I may not be using MACJAYs precise words , but hopefully you will all indulge me ?

Based on MACJAYs arguments, in effect it is therefore correct to state that NONE of us on here, or anywhere else have a right resent or like ANYONE that we don’t know personally worldwide ?

Again if MACJAY or anyone else wishes to maintain that view , does that mean ( assuming MACJAYs a Tim), unless HE knows numerous Celtic players past and/or present personally, he will NEVER be in a position ( this also applies to others who feel the same way as MACJAY), to post on here, opinions and/or views on many issues that are reported in the media about Celtic players ?

For example, if some media outlet reporting on a Celtic match states, ” Celtic player ” A” didn’t play well, he didn’t look interested etc etc”, would MACJAY ( and possibly others ?), jump on the reporters views by accusing him of ” slagging that Celtic players state of mind, even though the reporter doesn’t know that Celtic player personally” ?

That may not be the best example that I have used , but hopefully folk will see what I’m trying to get at ?

MACJAYs further statement in relation to Trump being caught on camera making his so-called locker room remarks ?

I would ask MACJAY ( as he sought to defend Trump, by clearly implying that we men are ALL guilty of making the same remaks), this question.

” MACJAY, would you be perfectly fine with Trump or ANYONE else making such remarks about your wife or daughter” ?

MACJAY argues that Trumps comments on women were only an issue cause he was caught on camera, and implies therefore that Trump has been somehow Unfairly treated by the media and the general public as a result of that video ?

Again assuming that MACJAY is a Celtic fan ? Let me ask him this, ” IF David Murray HAD been caught red handed on camera telling the Oldco Board and/or staff that , his plan to use EBTs was a great plan, and although he was fully aware that these EBT schemes meant avoiding paying tax etc etc , he was determined to go ahead, and tell Celticquicknews@g the SFA and the whole world to GTF”, would MACJAY use the very same argument that he has used to defend Trump, in a defence of Murray being caught in camera ?

Likewise, IF a Oldco/Sevco manager was caught on camera in their dressing room before facing Celtic, instructing his players to ” try and break Celtic players legs etc”, would MACJAY still defend that scum manager by saying ” Every manager in EVERY opposing dressing room, says the very same to his players before facing Celtic” ?

Would MACJAY (or others ) ? say that any manager/ or opposition players being caught on camera saying such a thing was somehow stitched up by the media ” ?

    Likewise, a manager/ player being caught red-handed on camera taking a bung/bribe to influence a match ?

God forbid MACJAY, if you have any women in your life , that any of them are subjected to sexual abuse by any male ( rich or poor) ?

Lastly, if I choose to dislike Trump or anyone else based on what I see or what I hear with my very own eyes and ears, via Trumps OWN mouth, noone is going to change my view on Trump on here, or anywhere else !

You have stated how many millions voted for Trump, but you have conviently neglected to mention the many MORE millions across the globe, who in the last couple of days are very fearful for mankind, and climate change etc, due to Trumps pre election rhertoric.

But if course, I had to rely on the media to become aware of those many millions across the globe fears, so their fears are not relative as they are ” media driven” ?

    Aye feckin right !

    Well.

    Hello there , Jimmy.

Far too many nonsequiturs and misrepresentations of my opinion about Donald Trump for me to answer each one in detail.

Why not address your opinions and attitudes about Donald Trump to the 60 or so million Americans who voted for him ?

Is it just possible that their opinion has really more significance than yours or mine ?

You don`t like him. So what ?

I do like him. So what ?

Why don`t you for just one moment consider your gross intolerance of the democratic process and accept that your views represent complete and utter intolerance of the democratic process.

There are three descriptors which could reasonably characterise that mindset .

    Communist.

    Fascist .

    Totalitarianist.

Which label applies to you ?

    Stuff democracy.

  7. HOT SMOKED,

You are oft quoted on here: “judge not lest…” and yet you do it so often yourself, in print, to justify a strange (strange for me anyway, considering) narrative of oppressive meanness.

Life, not our demographics best friend at the time, gave you the opportunity and the vehicle, why deny that to every single human being, regardless of their colour, or their politics, or their nationality, or their religion.

  22. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan on

    Good Morning.

Today is the day we learned that we had lost Leonard Coehn to the Tower of Song.

Big Len may not have been everyone’s cup of tea but by God he could write a lyric and a tune that made you think about yourself, the world around you and your contribution.

He was a very funny guy, with a great sense of humour though suffering from undoubted depression and a sense of self which was always doubting.

He had areal conscience in terms of social justice and engagement once writing ” The rich have got their channels in the bedrooms of the poor” – and how prophetic that was.

He released his last album, which is fantastic, only a couple of weeks ago.

I get the impression he checked out in protest at the American’s electing Trump.

“I love the country but I just can’t stand the scene” from Democracy is coming to the USA.

So long, Len …. it’s time that we began to laugh and cry and cry and laugh about it all again.

  23. MACJAY, what is your definition of ” democracy” ?

Let me guess, ” To hell with those that don’t agree with you” ?

You and other Trump drum supporting supporters on here are completely failing to grasp the profound hopes and dreams that people like myself have ?

    Allow me to enlighten you.

” I sincerely hope/pray and dream that Trump proves to not only be the most fairest, honest kind, president that America has ever had, and for that matter he goes down in history as one if the great leaders this planet has ever seen” ? In other words, I hope that many millions of people across the globe and myself of course are completely and utterly wrong about Trump ?

Call it a gut feeling,…….something tells me that ain’t gonna happen !

You and others don’t know me, but let me assure you that in my lifetime I have sadly been in the front line of official and unofficial strikes, against a government and/or local council policies, on too many occasions for my liking.

NEVER at any time, did I turn against a fellow workers simply because he/she wasn’t in the so called majority at the time of voting on whether to take strike action or not ?

In other words, (as I have heard with Trump) and you on here, folk like you and him are completely disinterested in those who do not share your views, in fact it’s worse in Trumps case as he now holds the possible future of this planet in his mitts.

If your okay with that, then fine but do not imply that I am a communist etc ( as you did earlier), simply because I detest neo nazi right wing politics ?

Again, let me enlighten you , just because I detest those politics does NOT mean to say that I support communism ?

Because I detested Hilter for example, dors that mean that I must have been a Joseph Stalin fan ? Don’t think do.

Because I always hated Thatcher and her ilk, does that mean that I was a fan of Neil Kinnock and others of his ilk ?

    Again, don’t think so.

Anyway, try and grasp the fact that in SOME says I sincerely hope and pray that you are a better judge of Trumps character than I am ?

I posted a question on here a couple of days ago,I would welcome your input on this.

Trump has publicly claimed that he will kick out 11 MILLION people out of America ?

Irrespective as to whether those 11 MILLION people are all criminals, illegal immigrants and rapists, as HE stated, how would you suggest that your hero Trump succeeds in such a venture WITHOUT serious blood letting and/or Civil War ?

Great sentiment; I started listening to Leonard Cohen when I was about 12. My older sister had Songs From a Room – much better than the Beatles, New Seekers etc. that sat in the family record collection.

To my untrained ear he was similar to Bob Dylan insofar as a lot of it was guitar and an unremarkable signing voice. The words were, and still are, remarkable.

Funnily enough, I went into HMV a couple of weeks ago to get the new album on vinyl, but they didn’t have it. I did leave with a new copy of Songs of Love and Hate to replace a well worn version. I listened to it again yesterday!

When I listened to the news this morning, I recalled a quote I read from him this morning from In His Own Words. A quick Google found it for me:

“I’m very fond of Jesus Christ. He may be the most beautiful guy who walked the face of this earth. Any guy who says ‘Blessed are the poor. Blessed are the meek’ has got to be a figure of unparalleled generosity and insight and madness…A man who declared himself to stand among the thieves, the prostitutes and the homeless. His position cannot be comprehended. It is an inhuman generosity. A generosity that would overthrow the world if it was embraced because nothing would weather that compassion. I’m not trying to alter the Jewish view of Jesus Christ. But to me, in spite of what I know about the history of legal Christianity, the figure of the man has touched me.”

Maybe sums the man up better than I ever could! Maybe in these recent days (and weeks and months) of political rancour and bitterness, it might resonate with many of us and we can reduce the divineness both at home and abroad!

In spite of the spats, CQN does many good things . It is a blog that I am proud to be associated with, but it must be noted that although we have one common denominator, The demography and social status of the Celtic family has changed dramatically . Especially over the last decade or more that CQN has been about.

Information is now at the click of a button, so inaccuracies can be challenged, however interpretation of available info will still be debated.

In football after the game, we used to have the pub debate on what we actually witnessed, now we click a button and what we thought we saw has been proved false.

I believe totally in equality and I respect the will of democracy. Why did 53% of white women in the USA vote for a man whose comments have been endlessly repeated over virtually all media outlets. Are these women daft or completely gullible? Of course the answer to that is no, so there is obviously another reason why they did not vote for a female that would smash the so called glass ceiling.

That is where we should be looking for answers.

Looking forward to the underdog overturning the odds tonight. I cannot get the same enthusiasm for international matches as I get for the hoops, but an England V Scotland game is definitely the next best thing.

I wonder if the OB storm troopers will be arresting anybody tonight at Wembley or in the pubs of Scotland, because they can you know.

    HH.
