Celtic flip from playing bottom to top of Europa League

544

Martin O’Neill is right to say Celtic are not getting too carried away after the win on Sunday, Newco are bottom of the Europa League table, whereas tonight’s opponents, Midtjylland, are top.  That’s a big step up in competency.

We have history with the Danes, having faced them in Ange Postecoglou’s early weeks in charge in 2021.  A 1-1 draw in the first leg at Celtic Park was not enough to prevent elimination from Champions League qualification after a 2-1 defeat in Denmark.  Ange has more recent history with them, one of the results which contributed to his dismissal at Nottingham Forest was a 2-3 home defeat against Midtjylland last month.  When Danish sides win away in England we should take note.

While Celtic had an exhausting 120 minutes on Sunday, Midtjylland hosted Danish league leaders AGF on Monday.  The extra day’s rest will be welcomed.  Monday’s game ended 1-1, leaving Midtjylland trailing by 2 points.  That stopped an impressive run of wins: 5-1 against Vejle, 0-3 against Macabi Tel-Aviv, 0-4 at Fredericia and 4-0 over Silkeborg.

Hibs started this season’s competitive action away at Midtjylland, where they achieved a very credible 1-1 draw.  The second leg also finished 1-1 before Midtjylland scored a 119th minute winner to prevent penalty kicks.  The charge against Hibs that night was that they lacked game management ability.  We will need plenty of that tonight.

I’ll repeat what I said the other: we will win if we can replicate our first half performance from Sunday.

    Mon the Honda Civics 👍

  2. For sufficient ‘game management ability’ it’s probably best we use senior players to establish a grip on the pace and patterns of the game.

    Kasper

    Tony, Auston, Liam and KT

    Arne, Calum and Benji

    Jamesy, Daizen and Tounekti

Bringing on Saracchi, Luke and Callum for a bit of energetic dig.

    Mon the hoops !

MON had some great results away in the UEFA Cup. Here’s looking for more, although not with a great deal of expectation, mind, all things considered.

If we could qualify for the next stage it would be a fantastic acheivement given the mayhem going on in the background . A mayhem which has been only slightly steadied by our interim management team. Even if we don’t , I will be happy just to make a fist of it and hope that next season sees us in a much better place . The league is the only thing that really matters this season .

  5. Certainly Hibs efforts should give us some encouragement going into this evening’s (5.45) game. And despite getting things wrong we have played away twice in Europe, against Kairat and Red Star, and never gave up too many goal scoring opportunities, never created many either it has to be said. Might do better on that front in Denmark. As always I am optimistic about getting a result and really would like to see us move up that EL table.

Beating the Danes would more than achieve that.

  6. Don’t wish to get carried away and am managing my expectations accordingly.

Used to sing ‘don’t be too hard on the young Celtic team’ and I think that’ll be my mantra tonight and any posts tomorrow.

Point would be a welcome bonus

  7. We really should have a chance tonight. Respect their recent credentials and smart modern approach to the game but worth also remembering we have a squad sprinkled with good and recent CL experience and a fair level of young potential also.

I have watched this team 3 x this season. Once live and 2 x on TV. 2 of the games were really very poor level. Sturm Graz and Hibs at home were horrible games. They actually played well in the other game at Easter Rd but were still lucky to go through to the next round courtesy of a 120th minute goal which prevented penalties.

I think we have a chance tonight. Perhaps it could be a night for a bit more discipline than the past 2 games though.

My nephew is in Herning, having stayed overnight in Hamburg.

Apparently there are dozens of Celtic fans in the area mixing with the local Midtjylland supporters. They met a few St Pauli supporters on the early morning train, intent on seeing the Celtic.

    2-1 to the Bhoys.

  9. I expect MON would like to have a strong defensive midfielder to take some of the weight off Callum McG.

Someone like the wee ginger guy from Lurgan he brought from Leicester City. Can’t remember his name but game management was his forte.

Did you see Lenny’s angry response to Charlie Mulgrew’s sarcastic comment at start of semi-final broadcast from Hampden?

At the side of the Hampden pitch from left to right, Lenny, Davies, Hutton, Mulgrew.

Female presenter asked about the return of Martin. CM said, “I remember when he brought a wee ginger Irish guy from Leicester who always passed the ball side to side and backwards.”

Lenny replied without a smile, “Just as well you’re at the other side of this line-up ya cheeky sod.”

    Everyone laughed.

    Lenny wasn’t happy.

    Thanks Tom.

I actually did see that and also thought that Lenny wasn`t too pleased but I wasn`t sure.

Couple of surprises there in the start line up.

But it does give us some good options on the bench

at fullback, midfield and up front

Hope Martin and Shaun have got it right…

    great if they did

  19. That’s a very attacking team, 4-3-3 not convinced about Tounekti as a player, team lacking physicality for me

Hope im wrong and Tounekti stars tonight

    COYBIG

  20. Good team, MO’N is smart enough to have genuine strength on the bench.

“not convinced about Tounekti as a player”

you may or may not be right, but he is the only player who has even remotely tried to entertain us this season.

    “team lacking physicality for me”

you could have copied and pasted that comment from virtually any of our euro games for the last decade at least.

  22. I like young Tounekti. He has plenty of development in front of him yet. He can beat a man on either side and has pace. He needs to work on his final ball. He is also good in the air for a winger because he’s tall.

Let’s trust in the players tonight. Martin and Shaun (M&S) will have them prepared. It’ll be really tough and I’ll be ecstatic if we get a draw.

  23. Good luck Celtic, hard work for the duration required, let’s see where that takes us coupled with taking chances.

All about opinions, he hasn’t entertained me at all, he has flattered to deceive delivering no goals in big games and very little chance creation of chances in big games, hopefully that quality final ball or a goal from the dancing tonight.

I couldn’t certainly against Bayern Munich away, maybe we watch a different Celtic from each other
