Celtic floored by lack of mobility

303

I don’t know if there is a good way to go out of Europe but that was certainly not one.  Copenhagen won their first match by more than a solitary goal since 3 November.  That they had a two-month winter break since then is not a mitigating factor.  We could not have hoped for a better opponent in the knock-out stage of a European competition.

Neil Lennon was correct to say individual errors was to blame; he was also correct in not throwing players under the bus, but this does not tell the whole story.  Copenhagen, tactically and individually, played the game of their season.  They knew what to do to leave Glasgow with a result and set about doing it.

Celtic were the better team until Copenhagen took the lead, but that superiority never overwhelmed the visitors.  In particular, we were short in midfield, where Copenhagen had greater mobility.  Odsonne Edouard was a spectator for much of the game and he often found himself surrounded with three defenders when the ball came his way.

Christopher Jullien was very good, Mohamed Elyounoussi was a real danger until the tank ran dry.  The same affliction befell Tom Rogic, who looked dead on his feet long before the second Copenhagen goal.

While this was a poor performance and dreadful result, it does not compare to the Cluj defeat in August.  Going out of the Europa League at this stage, the last sixteen or quarterfinals makes little difference.  As I said a few days ago, this week’s biggest game in St Johnstone on Sunday.  That becomes our immediate focus.

  1. Macjay. Stop saying the spin on what Lenny is saying

If Lenny told the truth he would be back propping up the bar at tennents bar

    Total tosh mate

  2. VAR missed what should have been our first goal from Calmac when it was 0-0. Their keeper has his arm around Edouards neck before Julienne barged him, goal should’ve stood or a penalty to us.

    👍👍

Not sure I agree with Dessybhoy. Varela was getting down the line pretty well in the 1st half (my seat is in the New Jungle in line with the 6yard line at the Celtic end. Acknowledge that I was noticing more his forward play rather than defence.

Sorry but that form of reasoning is ridiculous. By the same token, you could never criticise or pass comment on any person, institution or turn of events unless you had some direct link.

Lennie is talking about his boss in a public forum. Whatever his true feelings may be (and I’m not suggesting that they would be negative- PL brought him in after all), he is going to speak about him in a positive light.

Objectively speaking, £3m for a CEO of a Scottish football team is ridiculous.

My previous post was highlighting the misapplication of funds at the club and noting that Man U would be paying Ed Woodward £30m if they decided to take the same approach.

  5. Hands can’t see

100% mate is obscene pay for shambles performances in Europe against inferior clubs

  6. I’m not really interested in talking about non football matters but just on a small point of order. Pedro is not paid 3 million a year. He earned 3 million last year through a mix of salary plus 2 years bonus.

In previous years his average income was closer to one million.

Having said that I believe all the wages relating to football to be obscene including Pedro’s.

  7. Project players. Project managers. Salary caps for all

Then we have peter and all rules are off

    Obscene salary for European failures

  8. Cork Celt. Spin it any way you want

    Bonus is part of salary

No CEO in uk football had a bigger Salary then Peter

Do as I say and not do as I do

  9. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ CORKCELT on 29TH FEBRUARY 2020 11:42 AM

Im sure he was paid around £1.2/3m basic salary for the year the bonus was applied to. Add in £1.5m for that year’s bonus and he is taking out around £2.8m.

  10. Re Lawwels salary….

Obviously DD values him and other major clubs covet him, that’s why he keeps him….

    Happy 😀

Or should we take a cheaper chance on someone else?

  11. Lawwell was not to blame for Thursday’s result – forwards missed chances they should have scored and defence didn’t defend when it mattered

Ridiculous to give more credence to what Lennie says than to what you say ?

No. What is ridiculous , and frankly insulting , is to cast doubt on the sincerity of Lennie and the veracity of his comments.

P.L. is paid according to his contract. Why not address your ire to the Board who provided the terms of his contract rather than to the recipient of those terms.

  13. Gene. Peter lawell refused to give Neil the funds for a experienced Center Half and an experienced striker and some experience in midfield

We had 45m to spend in that window and bought a couple of cheap projects

At the next window we will have about 75m to spend after selling Eddie

Of course it’s peter lawells fault we don’t have the players on the park to beat teams on less turnovers than us

As we prefer to keep the cash for balance sheet

  14. Macjay. Celtic plc only have a few paid members of board. The CEO is one of them

The board is only there to satisfy plc Legal requirements

Pl runs all at Celtic park including HR who decide on bonus and salaries. Funny that eh

  15. Sidney Tim

I could have written your post before you did.

Thankfully football isn’t all about money otherwise we may as well chuck it.

I’ll be going to watch Port Vale this afternoon but before I go I better check on the relevant financial position of both teams to see if we have any chance.

    No .

What`s funny is that you don`t seem to understand that PL does what the Board tells him to do.

That`s why he is still in the job.

He satisfies them . That`s good enough for me.

    Repetitive futile discussion now.

    aka. BORING .

Now . Hopefully a hunfall at Tynecastle today.

  17. Yes Macjay

Celebrate getting knocked out again by a team on a fraction of our income

Hurrah Can’t wait till it happens again.

Hurrah hurrah All those smaller beating us in Europe

    Hurrah.

  18. Used to find this site a place of refuge after a poor result. Came on here to avoid everything else after Black Sunday. Have actually stayed away for a couple of days and looking back at previous posts I can see it was the right decision.

  19. Quick question, please.

Tickets now on sale for the 21st March at home vs St Johnstone.

Are they for season ticket holders or general sale? Website isn’t clear (plus ca change…) and can’t get through to the ticket office. I’m a season ticket holder but the website isn’t letting me buy online.

    Cheers.

  20. Celtic lose on Thursday night and sydney quim is back in all his glory with his personal attacks on PL due tae a grudge has held since he lived in kirkie.

  21. SYDNEYTIM

You came on here early in the season, and stated that Neil Lennon was in Tennants bar the night before a game. It was a blatant lie.

    Today you’re at it again.

    You only appear after disappointments.

I don’t know what your motivation is but you’re resentful of our success.

  22. It’s always the same on here when we lose, always. There has been some absolute crap written and what makes me laugh is all the “informed”stuff. You know, Neil has not had that or this from PL . PL not attempting to build for the future, Pl tells Neil who to sign, etc etc etc and so it goes on.

The FACT is we are on the verge of a quadruple treble, think about that, we are playing good attractive football most of the time, come on guys, wake up and check reality.

Oh another thing, Broony is knackered, aye right!!!!

Big score tomorrow for the good guys

I would just urge them to post more often win, lose or draw.

  24. Anyway

As Fred c Dobby would say – about to get into my rubber wheeled conveyance to head for Vale Park.

Doesn’t have the same ring to it.

  25. `… unite as a Support behind our Manager & team..`Corkcelt.

Sounds like a worthwhile suggestion to me.

  26. The facts are that NL stated that he wanted 2 experienced players in January. We spent £5.5m on 2 projects who couldn’t even get on the bench on Thursday.

As for C.L. next season we will struggle once again to qualify I’m afraid

  27. lets all do the huddle on

or maybe theres just more to be said when we get knocked out of europe in shambolic circumstances than there is when we beat hamilton 2-0 in the league 🤷🏻‍♂️

its the equivalent arguement about folk only telling you about their winning bets – but again thats cos theres not much to say about someone losing 2 quid on a horse compared to winning a grand

but you make a good point about encouraging folk to post more often
