Celtic fundamentals were just fine

186

By universal consent, Celtic appointed the best possible manager when Ange Postecoglou took over last summer.  Views at the time varied significantly.  Practically none of us had heard of him, some immediately took the view that he was some cheap fodder (reflecting their general world view), the best the rest of us could hope for is that he had talents we were unaware of.  The Aussies know, though.

Getting a managerial appointment right is notoriously difficult.  Today, Manchester United, the club formerly known as the richest in the world, appointed their fifth permanent manager since Alex Ferguson left nine years ago.  Two of the most successful names in the game, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho came and went without issue.  Davie Moyes, who continues to impress at West Ham, was laughed out of town within a year.

For three years until November, they were in the hands of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who achieved merit in three years at Molde, but ready for such a task?  Never.

Even when you have every agent on the planet touting their wares, when you can snap your fingers and get anyone’s ear, fitting the right person to the most important job is remarkably difficult.

After five years at Ajax, Erik ten Hag will take over at Old Trafford in June.  He enjoyed two exceptional Champions League campaigns, won two titles and leads this season.  He also lost home and away to Rosenborg in the Europa League qualifiers after Celtic eliminated Rosenborg from the Champions League.

I put his chances of success in Manchester at no more than 25%.  If the fundamentals of a football club are right, it will recover from setbacks, it not, all it can do it apply lipstick to some bacon.  For all our season of angst, Celtic’s fundamentals were just fine.  The evidence can be found on the pitch and by consulting the league table.

I will respond to your post. Note : not instigate.

I am somewhat conflicted just who is the greater danger to a harmonious and viable Scotland. The Tories or the SNP.

From a Celtic perspective I know who would be acquiescient to our requests.

  2. Ajeti, Barkas, Boli and Soro all need moved on – they’re not making the squads as a matter of routine and are dead weight in football terms.

A left back, a central defender ( 2 if CCV moves on), a left winger ( if Jota moves on), a right winger and striker needed in the summer.

Neil Lennon slams former Celtic teammates who ‘stabbed me in the front not the back’

The former Parkhead manager has revealed he no longer talks to some with whom he used to share a dressing room.

    SPORT

    Neil Lennon

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon has revealed there are some ex-Parkhead team-mates he no longer talks to since his acrimonious departure from Glasgow’s east end.

And he believes he was stabbed “in the front, not the back” by his old pals upon his exit.

    ADVERTISING

The Irishman was sacked as Hoops boss in February last year as his side’s 10 In A Row tilt fell short and they lost their grip on the Scottish Premiership title.

Lennon insists his relationships with the likes of former chief executive Peter Lawwell and the club’s largest shareholder Dermot Desmond have remained intact.

But that’s NOT the case when it comes to some of the players he used to share the hallowed Parkhead turf after the bitter end to his time at Celtic.

Speaking to PLZ, Lennon said: “It was painful, yeah. People turn on you very quickly.

“That’s the fickle nature of football sometimes, but I didn’t see it coming in the volume it did come.”

Asked if his relationships with Desmond and Lawwell have changed, he said: “Not at all. It has with some other people, ex-teammates…

“But certainly not with those two. I was very close to them and I still am.

“Yes (they were team-mates critical of me). I’m far from happy. They basically stabbed me not in the back, but in the front.”

Lennon then gave his impression of said team-mates when he spoke to them about their critical words.

    “‘A bu-bu-bu, I didn’t mean it like that’.”

Lennon caught the Scottish footballing world by surprise when he upped sticks for Cyprus last month.

And he’s revealed permanent successor Ange Postecoglou – with whom he’s shared many a chat with – was the inspiration for his move abroad to Omonia.

“He’s (Postecoglou) genuinely a really good guy,” Lennon added. “I’ve spoken to him on a lot of occasions.

“He’s rebuilt the squad which it needed doing, everybody knew that.

“But I think some of the players that he’s brought in have been fantastic and he’s on the cusp now of winning the title which would be fantastic.

    Fitting pipes…😂

  9. Fairhill bhoy – he obviously feels betrayed – a bit like some of us with the board over Res12, same club etc – I’m not ready to move on.

  10. BRIAN F on 21ST APRIL 2022 5:59 PM

G-mack was hopeless and a dud according to some of the roasters on here.judged him after two games.now he is the saviour.a guy that scores 30 goals in the dutch league is obviously a good player.some on here had him as the new cascarino.they are the duds.

    ———–

People make judgements on what they see. Before coming on to his recent form, what we had seen of GG, and it was far more than two games, was uninspiring, to say the least. He has worked hard, is noticeably fitter and has strung a number of impressive games together. People notice this, re-assess, and change their opinion.

Given this evidence and circumstances, people will of course change their views on most things, unless they are fools – no big deal! We all change our views every day of our lives based on experience, circumstances, context and new information.

Example: – before Christmas the bookies had Celtic @ 15/8 to win the title, now the price is 1/33. The bookies are not “duds”, they just change their opinion when the facts change.

A whole string of “duds” have turned up at Celtic Park over the years, some with good CVs & reputations – we had five in the squad last season.

“There shall be joy in Paradise” Luke 15:7

  11. I wonder if Anton Mclhone, can explain why our players were dead on their feet , during extra time on Sunday.

  12. p,s, JHB I don’t change my mind every day of the week,

Now & then there are fools such as I,

  13. Not sure I considered Gio a dud, I was more concerned that he may be another nearly man. Joining the long list of players we sign, plays twice then just slowly disappears.

Injuries have certainly curtailed the appearances of some of our signings

st tams- the lack of energy and pace on Sunday was definitely a mystery, given our last few performances, we need to be back on it for RC

GENE-that’s a different argument all together to be fair.

Lenny was probably used as a shield to protect the board in the end.But he was happy with that obviously 💰💵💵

And please don’t anybody come on and say Lenny was a great player BLA BLA BLA.

    We all know that.

We’re talking about his last year in charge and nothing else

  17. fairhill bhoy on

    JHB @8-33pm 🤦‍♂️

Remember when you made judgment on ange and Celtic’s season after 5/6games?

And I’m being generous there 🤡

  18. Neil Lennon WAS a great player, blah blah blah

    AND

A great Manager, blah blah blah.

I am talking about every year apart from his last 6 months in charge.

  19. Where did the story emerge that we have spent 30 million this season.Must be counting the 10-12 million for the loanees.

Well, we’ve managed to wangle that even though we play off the cuff…

From a human emotional perspective I think they are the same.

Just to be clear IMO Lenny should never have been given the role and should have gone on several occasions.

SS- it’s when he introduces the Donald Trump Clause,…..it wisnae me,it was Covid, no fans, players wanting out…..blah blah blah…..his reputation has diminished greatly for me,he must have knew after Sparta Prague reserves pumped us home and away, he couldn’t improve anything, he was done then, and should have resigned.

  24. maybe he asked to go, maybe he told them i am going to resign, maybe his great friends Dermo and Pete said you owe us to stay cos we took you on again,

    who knows,

    a sorrowful mystery for sure.

Are you happy that he continues to throw everyone under the bus .

Wouldn’t you rather he does what every ex manager does and just move on?

    Paid to answer questions 🤷🏻‍♂️

He could say a million things without being a twat, but he constantly gives it the big it wasn’t my fault.

And it wasn’t just the last 6 months 🤦‍♂️

i wish him well in his new endevours.

SS@9-12pm. So why did you jump on my post’s if you don’t give a rats arse 🤔

The guy is legend, but every time he passes the buck ,and he does it constantly he loses a bit of that.

  31. FB,

all thise things he says did actually happen didnt they ?

he hasnt just made it up.

specifically in that interview he talks about his pals (i am guessing sutty, bbj, lambert , thommo maybe even stan), so again guessing that hurt him more than fans on the paradise way.
