Celtic get the ball rolling with Griffiths

318

So Leigh Griffiths is set to be a Celtic player today.  I bet we could all guess a few topics covered at induction.  He is in because he scored 23 SPL goals for Hibs last season, more than anyone at Celtic achieved, and is currently Wolves top scorer with 12 goals.

Despite appearing to predictably win games 4-0 recently our problems in attack are evident.  Anthony Stokes is our top striker but has scored less than half Kris Commons’ total, while defender Virgil van Dijk matches or better the rest of the strikers tally.

Leigh is the second striker we’ve brought in this month but at 6’2” Holmbert Fridjonsson is a completely different proposition.

More later on this and others, I’m sure.

  1. Bhoys and Ghirls,

As long as we can say on Saturday that we have not come out the transfer window in a poorer position then that will do for me.

Ref Leigh Griffiths : IMO, when fit he will be a first choice pick. NFL is not stupid, he knows yet another project cannot be acceptable.

Here’s hoping, but only time will tell.

Very true that if he’d come in from say Sampdoria and looked like Cadete, we’d tend to get a different perspective. I can think of a few unsexy sort of low profile signings who have rattled in the goals for us. Dixie Deans and Frank McGarvey to name two.

  3. Griffiths will be a good signing, he will be surrounded by players who are much much better than Hibs could ever be and wolves and he will get a lot more chances per game!

He should be seen as our 1st choice striker! Stokes is far to selfish and wastes far too much, pukki is your Heskey type player, he’ll create more than he scores.

Banguras gone, Watt will probably join him and never establish himself (which is a shame) and Balde I think is a good player with pace and in time will come good and can see him being used more in a desperate situation, for example, if and when we are drawing 1-1 with 15 mins to go, get the long ball up to him.

  7. That’s another predictable one joined the knife sharpening club, seems to be getting bigger too, and just a wee pointer here, I’ve got you all marked down, the yes and no’s, your all on my what was it called? Ethnic Cleansing List? Oh and don’t ask me what that is, I haven’t a clue, someone told me some nutter in here said I had one, sad people, only thing I have is an opinion, but if that’s what others call it who am I to disagree, that would be there opinion.

I still think Lawwell’s choking the cheque book till the clive dunns come back, and hopefully thats not in my lifetime. You just know that LG will score at least 25 here next season but Europe’s another story.

  8. Gerryuk 67. Peter lawell will not release funds for anything more than griffifths as that will affect his personal income

I hope the knees of Karagandy and Cliftonville and Airbus UK Broughton are knocking but somehow I don’t think the – shouldIbebrickingit – o’meters of the likes of Real Madrid or Arsenal or Juventus or Porto will even register a flicker.

Don’t get me wrong, I have no idea what everybody is alluding to about the bhoys previous behaviour, and I couldn’t really be bothered to google it, I do trust Celtic in some departments, especially commercial image, I do wish the bhoy every success but I fail to see the ambition of the club or the logic behind the signing. I was not joking earlier when I said Celtic could save the money and pay THEIR own employees – who have shown them loyalty – a poxy living wage.

Our ‘projects’ wage bill must surpass the wage bill of quite a few full time professional teams in Scotland, and still we discard our own, like trash.

Things to note today, the sky sports Scotland team is full of currents who thought Sevco should have got into the prem, who sent a camara to Motherwell to watch chairs being fixed, showed no balance in the reporting of the Dam and who over indulge in all things positively spun down sevconia way whilst reluctantly reporting actual good new our club creates. I’ve met a bunch of them and recently the crap they report when I brought it up was laughed off. They have nothing left but to try and annoy us. I suspect lots of attempts at unsettling of our players today, subtle points about the use of our and the way it’s run. This is because to them this is just Friday. Jack Irvine will I suspect get double payments for today, so please take a lot of what’s said with a pinch of salt.

The common consensus is that he isn’t someone who will make all the difference in the qualifiers?! Goals won’t help, no?

We were lucky not to get dumped out by Elfsborg never mind Karagandy so an out and out striker may just be key.

He doesn’t have to make ALL the difference, you have to give yourself every chance and if that means making a 1% difference then go for it.

Ah the old Stokes is too selfish argument, I haven’t heard that one in a while. Second highest assister of goals in our team after Commons.

If he was more selfish he might score more goals!

  18. I’ll gladly tip LG to score on Sunday – especially if he gets a full 90…

KM played in teams where he didn’t/wasn’t expected to score every game (Just like WGS managed teams where he didn’t/wasn’t expected to win every game), we signed him to play against teams playing a high line – only teams rarely play/played a high line against Celtic especially at home.

LG has more in his locker and that ability (Like Stokes) to make enough space to release a thunderbolt from anywhere.

I did qualify my post by saying we were poorer then, but the simple point of my post was that none of those players, nor many others too, were ever bought as projects.

  23. LG ticks all the moneyball boxes. He’s a limited risk compared to the other strikers we brought in for more money.

Earlier someone was talking about Juve and Madrid not shaking in their shoes at the thought of playing LG. Come on, we’re not capable of signing any player that will worry the euro giants.

I was against this signing but now that it appears a done deal, I wish LG all the best and will give him my full support, as I’m sure we all will.

  24. Welcome LG- good player -maybe we could get Sannabhoy to look after his weans during the games at home?

  25. Kit. I agree with you. Griffifths will not have those teams shaking

But we have to get back to basics. We have had an absolute shambles of striker policy where it is that bad, that our strikers would struggle to score League 1

You and me were brought up with charlie. Frank, George , Brian ,frankybhoy that we expected our strikers to score goals

Tommy Johnston would have been first pick with these duds beside him

I don’t think he’s good enough to be sure of a start ahead of tony stokes.

I could be wrong, hope I am, but on that basis, no I don’t think he makes a big difference in the qualifiers.

You’ve got your opinion, I’ve got mine. I don’t think he’s good enough. Worth a punt a few years back for less money, but now he’s a £1 million signing I can’t see the sense in it.
