Celtic get the ball rolling with Griffiths

318

So Leigh Griffiths is set to be a Celtic player today.  I bet we could all guess a few topics covered at induction.  He is in because he scored 23 SPL goals for Hibs last season, more than anyone at Celtic achieved, and is currently Wolves top scorer with 12 goals.

Despite appearing to predictably win games 4-0 recently our problems in attack are evident.  Anthony Stokes is our top striker but has scored less than half Kris Commons’ total, while defender Virgil van Dijk matches or better the rest of the strikers tally.

Leigh is the second striker we’ve brought in this month but at 6’2” Holmbert Fridjonsson is a completely different proposition.

More later on this and others, I’m sure.

Bet he doesn’t take 3 months to get his first goal.

    ———————————————————————–

His first goal wont be against the huns, he’ll be long retired by the time they are back.

  2. I hope the knees of Karagandy and Cliftonville and Airbus UK Broughton are knocking but somehow I don’t think the – shouldIbebrickingit – o’meters of the likes of Real Madrid or Arsenal or Juventus or Porto will even register a flicker.

Well that’s a given, for the big teams to knocking there knees at any player playing against them your talkin £20 – £40 mill players, we are not on that planet, so what we have is what I support, may not be good enough to take on the giants of Europe but rest assured they will all be trying there best, just like all the others before them, HH.

Fair enough. Hugely different times, while we’ve always sold players at the right price it definitely didn’t need to be part of the business plan in those days.

Thats not the case, Commons only has 3 assists, Stokesy has 5, but thats besides the point, he falls over himself far too often, and rarely picks the correct ball which is always the obvious one. He is a selfish player, is far more interested in creating goals for himself than to pick the easier ball and create for a team mate.

When the top teams in Europe buy top players I don’t think Celtic are shaking in there shoes either, can’t think of a time when any team signing someone had me worried :-) HH

1million is the fee because he is an international and his goalscoring record is good wherever he has been.

He will score more than Tony Stokes.

1million is small change even for us at the moment and at 23 this is not money down the drain. I’d say he’s even more worth a punt NOW that he is proven at a good level, the fee remains relatively low and he has not yet hit his peak years.

    Give him a chance.

  10. Leigh G probably kept Pat Fenlon’s job secure at Hibs when he was banging in the goals and Pat suffered big time when Leigh returned to Wolves this season and Pat eventually walked the plank.

Surprised we haven’t looked at a back up left back ..

Given the players Thistle are signing (Bauben & Moncur on loan for West Ham) I wouldn’t be surprised to see Taylor-Sinclair by the end of the day.

  14. Gerryuk67. 1m for griffifths. Interested on your opinion on. Pukki. ( 2.9m for a shalke 500k failed project). Or 1.5 on Balde or 2.2 on bungera Or Makes me sick this one 2m for a Dutch sick note

My recollection was that this was introduced to stop big clubs which were having a difficult time just going out any buying players whenever they felt like it.

However, it has received almost a unanimous thumbs down from managers and players alike and always ends up with a last minute scramble when most business is done and rush decisions are made. Clubs can sign as many as they like (apart from Hearts) so they can still plunder the smaller clubs.

I have often thought that a better way would be to restrict the number of signings over a season. So, if a club starts with a squad of players, they can add an agreed number of payers over the season to that squad.

This would cut out the last day madness whilst restraining the rich clubs from buying whenever they liked as their quota would become exhausted.

Each model has its pros and cons but no-one like the current one so maybe a new model is worth a try?

I am braced for the multitude or replies pointing out the flaws in my model so bring them on.

Not going to argue with you but you’re wrong and not about the stats by the way just goes to show when Commons is a bit more selfish what he can achieve.

That’s not to say Stokes shouldn’t score more goals he should and especially this season where we are on a virtual procession to the league title. He should have 20 by now and the fact that he doesn’t to my mind means he should take a leaf out of Commons book and be more selfish.

By the way Ryan Gauld 6 assists and 5 goals…..go on Neil…..this kid will be a star.

  22. weeminger:

How much money have we made from the last two seasons champions league campaigns, how much money have we made from sales? Don’t answer that. How much money have we spent on players who can’t get a game in our first team? Don’t answer that. What has Leigh Griffiths ever done in his career that merits him getting a starting place over all the expensive projects we have brought in, and if you can quantify that, why then did we waste so much money on so many projects when we are competing in a one horse race and paying a large percentage of our loyal staff less than a minimum wage?

I can’t see the point of the signing beyond cheap pacification. (and in no way in saying that am I trying to belittle Leigh Griffiths)

Is Leigh Griffiths the benchmark of our ambition?

That’s my concern. A lot of Griffiths’ goals for Hibs were running onto long balls booted out of defence, with only one or two opposition defenders to beat. Totally different proposition to the way teams play against us. So not totally convinced by the logic of “he scored x for Hibs so he’ll score 2x for Celtic” theory.

    …………………..

I admired him with Hibs, but this is a good point. He won’t be playing on the break with us.

I think it always wise to take reported figures with a pinch of salt. Some are flat fees, some are deals.

I think the Bangura figure was always the deal and I doubt we’ll have ended paying it all out. Regardless, he’s been a waste of money.

The rest have probably got until this time next year to prove otherwise. Pukki is a better player than Stokes.
