Celtic get there. Lighting a candle for Dave King

148

Celtic were far from their slick best on Saturday, but they still dominated Hearts and could easily have won by a more flattering margin.  For most of the game, Steven Naismith set out to defend as we predicted.  It was only when Hearts pressed Celtic that his side belied their place at the bottom of the league – and managed to disrupt the champions.

I don’t often hear the positive characteristics of directors at Ibrox, so when I do, they stick in the mind.  Apparently, Oldco’s much maligned Martin Bain and Newco’s Stewart Robertson had little time for calls to the baser instincts made by their clubs.  John Bennett, who resigned as Newco’s chairman and interim-CEO on Saturday, falls into the same category.

Sipping hemlock from that Loving Cup is a mugs game.  Hopefully Bennett will recover from his brush with toxicity.

I don’t have time to write, and you don’t have time to read, everything we could share about Dave King today.  The man who as non-exec at Oldco was paid to look after the interests of all stakeholders, while the club marched towards liquidation.

Who then campaigned relentlessly against the Newco founding fathers as the fledgling club tried to establish itself.  The same person who advocated Newco “overinvest” in an attempt to catch Celtic, leading to today’s consequences.

Yesterday, he nominated himself as the man to rejuvenate the failing club.  “I’ll come in, stabilise it, get the right people in place, get the club working properly, at least give it direction, give it a plan.”  It’s that simple!

He sprinkled his comments with fairy dust like “Steven Gerrard”, who is lauded for winning one trophy in nine, in a season Celtic collapsed on all fronts.  He also said, “Saudi, obviously”, I mean, obviously, he’d mention Saudi!

And apparently, “There’s a lot of interest in America”, and in case you are in doubt, “[Newco] really should be able to march on and actually dominate in Scotland.”  Actually. Dominate. In. Scotland!

Neither of us have time to digest this in full, so let’s get to the golden nugget:

“I think we’ve got to get away from the model where we just rely on supporters writing out checks. There is money out there, but that money is not going to come from Rangers.”

There are two views on how to run a football club:

1. Live within your means.
2. Do not live within your means.

Despite all his precious Rangerses have gone through, Dave still believes that surviving on the teat of a sugar daddy is the way forward.  This is populist nonsense, which liquidated Oldco and wrecked Newco.

Give him the job, let him set aside all those promises John Bennett made about sustainability.  If we put a plaque on the wall of Celtic Park with Dave King and David Murray’s names on it, there would be more candles lit below it than there are at Carfin Grotto.

We’ll pick up on those two world views on how to run a club next week.

had exactly the same problem at the PK time.

    How do they manage it?

    Some skill set ;)

  3. I’m sure the rest of the Epl would be happy with a guilty verdict on rule breaking but that there was no sporting advantage. Well it worked here.

  4. Decent sustainable numbers

Hope it translates into a great performance on the park this week.

We have the tools and a good manager. Maybe not the practise against decent oppositon but not much we can do there.

Our support can be worth its weight if it really galvanises behind the team. Only 2 more sleeps until we get to hear that anthem.

We have now heard it more at CP than ever st ibrox. Something we never thought back 30 years ago.

  5. Great annual results. They speak for themselves and need no explanation from me.

If we need to strengthen again in January I’m sure it will be taken care of.

In this crazy foorball world, money, and the ready access to it, is strength – we are strong! HH

  6. We have got a good home record against teams from Czech-Slovakia going back to 1964….

    Lets keep that going

  7. Could not give a damn what Rangers are doing.Whatever it is,its too late.Unless of course its funny. What I do care about is the sheer misery we are heaping on the brain dead bigots that follow them. That will always be a great source of joy to me.Posts highlighting their stupidity, pain, always welcome for me,and the vast majority of Tims.

If it does not rock your boat, for some strange reason, you can always scroll by to what does.

    Hail Hail.

  8. Very nervous about Wednesday night.I did happen to watch their qualifying game,in which they were underdogs.Great team spirit and fight got them through.IF we play well, then yes,but so many kicks to the gonads, makes you wary of another.

Nazi poster boy. Please God,don’t let that piece of vermin score.

The following teams topped their groups last season’s CL.

    FC Bayern (German fan Owned)

    Arsenal (American owner)

    Real Madrid (Spanish fan owned)

Real Sociedad Spanish (Owner not identified but shares available to buy via trader)

Atletico Madrid Spanish owned by a number of shareholders)

Borussia Dortmund German owned by a number of shareholders

Manchester City Abu Dhabi United Group.

    Barcelona Spain Owned by supporters.

I don’t know if they will form the last 8 this year but only two are owned by non national owners.

    Two lions 6 Christians.

Any USA ownership is interesting as they want to invest for profit. Traditionally how does any owner make a profit?

By paying employees less than the business is earning.

Man Utd/Glazers where the quality of player Man Utd can recruit has fallen in comparison to their nearest neighbour with no such profit motive.

Only an owner not interest in profit would invest in a football club and there are less of those lions around than Christians.

The Super League has not happened and football needs to protect itself against such an invasion. Too much opposition from owners and supporters of the clubs outside the predictable last eight who are playing by the rules.

I mean what’s in it for them to allow it?

    Self interest wins.

Aye he or previous Chairmen do it every year in lead up to the annual AGM.

Thinks we’re daft and don’t notice. Every friggin year.

  11. Great figures – HMRC will be well pleased.

As am I. I just wanted another 1 or 2 quality signings in, but as i said the squad we had before window I think will win the treble.

The CL draw has been quite favourible but is our squad got enough quality at that level?

Lets get stuck in and see.

Only because SPL lawyer Rod McKenzie did not point out to LNS that during the First Tier Tax Tribunal SDM explained why ebts were used by Rangers.

    https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hwbakQ7lVAE5Dx4gyXWivFwUwytFj4mW/edit#heading=h.gjdgxs

Whilst the FA could not use that example they could always point out that clubs who spent out of their legitimate means to pay players, which caused insolvency , had a points value attributed to the matches they won as a result.

That became the justification for 10 points deduction for insolvency, since updated.

If no sporting advantage gained then clubs could appeal against the points deduction which kills one deterrent to behaving in an unsustainable manner.

    Points deduction in Scotland: (Wiki)

Following the adoption of a points sanction in the English Football League, a similar rule was proposed for adoption by the Scottish Premier League (SPL) in December 2003.[174]

It was announced in January 2004 that SPL clubs going into administration in the 2004–05 season would be subject to a 10-point deduction and be prevented from signing new players. With Motherwell and Dundee already in administration at the time, it was decided that if “they are not in the process of coming out of administration by 31 May”, the deduction would be applied at the start of the following season.[175]

Furthermore, the Scottish Football Association would not allow clubs in administration to play in European competition.[176] Both Motherwell and Dundee met the required conditions to avoid the deduction of points.[177]

The 10-point penalty was subsequently applied to Gretna in the 2007–08 season[2] and Rangers in 2011–12.[178]

    ——————–

The latter and underlying principles could have been pointed out to LNS but wasn’t as that would have torpedoed LNS Decision as would the other piece of information mentioned at the link.

  14. How do you make a small fortune?

Start with a big fortune, then invest in a football club.

Cant remember where i heard itCSC

  15. AULDHEID on 16TH SEPTEMBER 2024 8:12 PM

The last 8 last year were

    Arsenal

    Bayern

    Atlético de Madrid

    Dortmund

    Real Madrid

    Manchester City

    Paris

    Barcelona

I wasnt talking about the ownership model for these teams, I was pointing out that a super league already exists and that breaking into it in any meaningful way is beyond us and everyone outside the elite. And the clubs that are part of the elite but arent in the EPL are facing an uphill battle to keep up with City, PSG and the EPL clubs.

The most successful club side in history, in recent history has spent very little on players recently and has put itself in massive debt with the ground refurbishment to ensure it can compete.

“Only an owner not interest in profit would invest in a football club”.

Over half of the original 12 Super League clubs are American owned. Half of the EPL, 20 clubs in the big 5 leagues. 16 of the 20 in the EPL are foreign owned. They are only in it because they see the possibility of a return, or they will take their money elsewhere.

The Italian clubs are hugely in debt and a long way from the glory days when they were regularly the best teams in Europe, the Spanish teams have permanently got sand in their bits about the unfair advantage EPL tv money gives to the English clubs. The German teams are at last half fan-owned to so wont go for it, but you can be sure PSG will if its right for them. They wont admit it openly but they all want a Super League, its in the American owners DNA, none of these club owners arent used to getting what they want and none of them will let go of the idea because they all see guaranteed profit from a closed league.

  16. Looking at the amount of positions PL has between ECA,UEFA,,I am really surprised he has any time to interfere with anything at Celtic Park.

H,mm,wonder if there is any truth in the scurrilous rumours,

thats why he has to have a position on the Board,to be eligible?

Surely not. That would trash thousands of agendas.

    Boo. Boooo

  17. Message for the many PL-obssessives on CQN. In just about every plc, the annual accounts are introduced with the “Chairman’s Annual Report”.

Why should Celtic plc be any different?

If I had to pick one post that epitomised what it is like being a Celtic supporter, that would be a strong candidate. Excellent.

  20. lets all do the huddle on

you are correct – PLCs all need to follow a certain narrative, especially legally.

but i would like to think that a football club is different from a bank or a supermarket, especially in the way it looks at its ‘customers’.

i shop in sainsburys several days a week but thats not the same as putting my cash into celtic
