Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

Probably get a more rational decision there!

  2. If some believe Neil should not have taken the opportunity to see Juve live, I, for one, m astounded. He should be taking every opportunity to do so. Our backup management team and the players should be well capable of surviving a night without Lenny being there.

  3. Rio Ferdinand Tweeted “Welcome To The Best Club In The World Victor Wanyama” then removed it, yehhh bwoyy #MUFC @j_man_k @Bobsta91

    Not sure if genuine…

  4. Starry,

Agree entirely that the venom on the site is just crazy after a defeat. (I tend to wait a day or two before coming back on).

You also said earlier that there is evidence that many other teams are playing more and better football since the demise of ‘Them’ and I think you can see that at Celtic Park. Personally I’ve enjoyed seeing teams coming at us, putting pressure on us and even threatening us at times – that’s what football’s supposed to be about and NOT about one team being catered for at all times. There is a real refreshing feel about the league this season with teams up and down the country actually trying to play football to win.

All of this must stick in the craw of the compliant MSM, the Sectarian FA, Dungchucker et al.

  5. Gorgeous George giving the Sevconians food for thought in the Dundee Courier today:

George Galloway wants Rangers to be pursued for £14m in tax

    By Andrew Argo, 29 January 2013 10.48am.

Dundee-born MP George Galloway wants the Government to tackle Rangers for £14 million in tax withheld by the Ibrox club before it went into administration.

The Respect politician has tabled an early day motion in the House of Commons aimed at stopping Rangers from “sidestepping their liabilities”.

His move has been supported so far by only three MPs, including Dundee West Labour member Jim McGovern.

It may struggle to gain enough support to be formally debated in Westminster but it has attracted a range of comments from fans on the internet.

As member of parliament for Bradford West, Mr Galloway is toasting the triumph of Bradford City in reaching the final of the Capital One Cup at Wembley.

The former Harris Academy pupil, who began his political career as secretary-organiser of the Labour Party in Dundee, has been irked by Rangers going into liquidation with massive debts but re-emerging as a newco.

Although now playing in the Scottish third division, they have held on to their Ibrox home and are challenging any moves to strip them of the trophies and titles they have collected since their formation in 1873.

Mr Galloway’s early day motion states that the House notes that the owners of the club now playing in the Scottish Third Division called Rangers claim that it is the same club with the same history as the liquidated club also known as Rangers.

It further notes that £14 million in VAT and PAYE was withheld in the run-up to administration by the previous Rangers, and further notes that the club is now cash-rich through a share issue which raised in excess of £20 million.

It calls on MPs to condemn “the use of insolvency laws to avoid paying tax owed”. It also calls on the Government “to take steps to reclaim the outstanding monies from Rangers and to bring forward legislative proposals to prevent clubs and companies sidestepping their liabilities through liquidation and then carrying on trading with effectively the same name and in exactly the same business”.

Rangers yesterday declined to comment on the move by Mr Galloway, which the MP’s office admitted he had raised “to air an opinion and seek interest and support inside parliament and beyond”.

There is sympathy in Dundee for the MP’s motion, with one fan on the Dundee United Mad website posting: “Never let them forget, sock it to them George.”

Reaction to Mr Galloway on Rangers fans’ sites was hostile, with supporters accusing him of hatred for the Ibrox club.

Last night, Jim McGovern came to his fellow Dundonian’s defence, saying: “What happened to Rangers is something that should concern all Scottish football fans, including Rangers fans. There are other issues at stake as well.

“Rangers Football Club is a company like any other, and it has become an increasingly worrying trend that some companies have been able to use insolvency laws to avoid paying their taxes and repaying debts to small suppliers after the company is reformed.

“This is an issue that goes beyond football and must be addressed. I believe this is the point the early day motion was trying to make.”

Chris Allan, an expert in insolvency law with Dundee legal firm Thorntons, said: “This motion is asking for a fairly fundamental rewriting of insolvency law and I would think it unlikely to succeed.”

  6. Some comparing Charlie to ‘the heid’!

He’s no Paolo Maldini who started off as a LB, before moving to the centre of defence in his later career, but comparing him to Gary Caldwell is a bit harsh imo.

    HH!!

  7. Like me is anyone surprised that there has been zero comment in the MSM oe even on Shortbread itself following Kenny Sheils’ interview on last Saturday evenings’ programme where he extensively discussed the SFA appeals process and the sham that it is. Operation protect Dallas minor in full swing.

  8. ‘Mad’ Mario Balotelli possibly on his way to Milan according to media speculation over here – Milan offering 20 million, City want 22 million.

  9. Hail Hail all from a very wet, windy & desolate Tipperary. Ye’re lucky ye are a long way away. Totally agree with jimmci re the Kenny Shiels interview, the MSM adherence to their Omerta code would do justice to Don Corleone. Still struggling to come to terms with Sunday’s debacle, tomorrow nights match can’t come soon enough to start the healing process.

Because they’re not regulars, they’re not Tims? Nonsense.

I think people forget this is the internet and Celtic BLOG. Critcising some aspects of the club on here is not the same as booing the team at the game. If Celtic supporters are not happy with Sunday’s performance (me) and/or not happy with Lenny’s performance overall (not me), then this is ther correct forum to air those views. I admit there are some whose motives I would question as their critique is personal and unrelenting, but most of the posts on this forum I believe are bourne of a love for the club, both positive and negative.

In short how can anyone get upset at what’s said here?

Clubs in Milan bracing themselves for Mario’s – possible – imminent arrival.

As are the local traffic wardens and traffic cops.

The big game at the weekend – Spezia v Verona was a big let-down:

Verona won 1-0, and the only violence was a few missiles and a couple of smoke bombs thrown before the game – no arrests! 300 cops on duty for a game which attracted a crowd of 7,250!

    HH!!

  13. Jimmci,corkcelt-Alex Smith, who i am sure is Managers Union rep ,should have driven a coach and horses through Shiels’kangaroo court.Or probably the handshake has won the day again, criminal that Dallas Jr did not give evidence, when that was the whole crux of the matter.

  14. The Hampden result was a shock but there also quite a few strange results in England last weekend and surely this is what Cup football is all about – this is the glamour of the Cup. It’s bad for football to see the big teams dominate every competition and the minnows will always be capable of causing an upset.

Celtic are still in three competitions and there is far too much speculation about Hooper and Wanyama flying around at present. Celtic have played ten games in the Champions Lge against the cream of Iceland, Sweden, Russia, Portugal and Spain and have finished in the top two of that League and move on to play the Champions of Italy. If the club really has ambition they must hold on to the best players and go for the big prizes of the Championship, Scottish Cup and the Champions lge.

I see both Hoops and Vics names have been quoted on sky sports this morning, should they have played, they are young players we know they will be distracted, both were distracted prior to the Barca games, their future will be as big a distraction.

I remember someone on here told us after a Barca game, Barca asked Celtic to keep them updated on any offers for Vic, if true, and negotiations are afoot he will be distracted.

I dont see Hoops going yet but if his agent is pestering him, how can he not be distracted, I hope his aim is to make as big an impression as Vic.

I suspect Vic will go to Barca in the summer. The Kenyan FA said he would soon be joining one of the world’s biggest 2 clubs.

The trick is to keep them on the line as long as possible by acting daft.

They usually end up slamming the phone down on me after about 10 minutes.

  22. I think the complaints about posters on the site stems from a few who never seem to post when we are doing well and only come on after a defeat, or to repeat that the MSM have reported that Celtic will play in blue next season and replace the Celtic badge with a red white and blue flag…

  23. A few years back -I went to to a Vittoria —- Comiso game [ Lega Pro whatever ]

Absolutely mental . Crowd @ 500 Lots of cops /lots of dogs. Post match violence was so bad that the local Men of Honour were forced to stop their card game and send some of their boys onto to the streets to say —–BASTA !.

Watched a documentary recently —–it featured old timers reminiscing about the good old days of street violence between young members of one Cathedral’s parish and the young members of another..

A toothless old man said — it was worse than anything at football “

  24. In a previous post there was absurd criticism of Neil Lennon and a possible weakness having his old pals as part of the management team in relation to a speech by Alex Ferguson at the recent funeral of Sean Fallon. Fergie made a point of having a strong assistant. Jock Stein and Sean Fallon were old pals and former teamates and it was no hindrance to a highly successful partnership.
