Celtic get what their inconsistency deserved

827

Was anyone surprised at yesterday’s result?  You shouldn’t have been.  I don’t think I’ve ever before written two articles against taking a result for granted.  Celtic are ridiculously inconsistent as Kilmarnock, Hibs, St Johnstone, Inverness and now St Mirren will testify, even Arbroath left Celtic Park with a draw.  The intensity which has been self-evident on Champions League duty has been posted missing far too often.

Defeat yesterday was entirely possible as is defeat away to Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup on Sunday.  There will be entirely different tactics and attitude when Juventus call next month but right now you’re feeling sore because, against all odds, we’ve conceded a League Cup final place and we’ll find an equally brave opponent at some point in the Scottish Cup unless a solution is found.

Speaking at the funeral of Sean Fallon last week, Sir Alex Ferguson referred to need for a manager to be a hard taskmaster, generating a corresponding need for the assistant manager to be plugged into the dressing room.  I’m sure this is not the only way of managing a football team but it was how Jock Stein and Sean worked, and it’s how Sir Alex has worked for the last three decades.

Millionaire players need an edge in their lives to deliver on a lesser stage.

I had to be in Paisley all morning, which did not help my mood.

  1. So we are all hoping for, nay expecting, a vastly improved performance on Wednesday against Kilmarnock after yesterday’s debacle?

How many times have we said that this season? I have lost count.

Our early season home form in the SPL was poor to say the least, but lately we had started to get it together possibly due to the fact that we had qualified for the last 16 of the CL and would not be playing again in that competition until February.

I will await with great interest for the formation that Neil puts on the park on Wednesday – and I hope and expect a vastly improved performance!

    HH!!

  2. Shimmies-Agree but not sure if PL would spend £4 mil, even with the CL money we have made.

After Fergus took over when we played at Hampden for a season I was living in Mount Florida. During the course of the season I got 4 parking tickets during games for parking outside my flat! There were no parking restrictions.

I didn’t even get any pies.

  4. SPL votes 12 12 18, any details divulged?

Any notification of how this will work? Promotion? Relegation? Split? Pyramid system?

Remember this was all carried out because the fans asked, nay demanded it, does any of the fans know what was voted on?

Does any of the fans know what the clubs voted for?

Its all about the fans, aye right.

The match you refer to was the Frank Beattie testimonial – the score was actually 7-2 to Celtic if I am not mistaken, and Kenny did indeed score 6 goals.

Frank Beattie played his entire career with Kilmarnock and was captain when they won the league way back in 1963/64.

    He was also a Tim.

Ruthless managers bag a player and buy a player after a result like yesterday.

Will Neil do that and who gets binned and where do we need to strengthen?

*After losing heavily to the Thistle in the LC Final Big Jock went out and bought Denis Connachan from St Mirren who even losing 3 goals had a stormer against us in the Semi.

He also bought Dixe Deans from motherwell as in the 2nd half we made enough chances to win the game but failed to convert them.

Dixie was still serving a suspension at the time but 4 weeks later we went tae Firhill and gubbed the Maryhill Magyars 5-1.

My uncle (sort of adopted uncle) was Jackie McGrory … so I remember going to Rugby Park with him and Frank Beattie when I was a kid… they are the only two from that team that I remember… probably the only two tims!

IMO Charlie Mulgrews hairdo made him look like Stan Laurel, he played like him too !!!

Dark , satanic mood lifting a bit, should be cleared by Wednesday.

Just astounded to hear of your new found expertise pertaining to “coiff” related matters.

I must say that I am equally amazed at your claim regarding the merits and capabilities of Stan Laurel, the footballer.

Yes, things could be a lot worse if you were a sevconian – Like applying to the Post Office for employment…….Eh!

Great to hear that you’re not feeling so dark and satanic and are on the road back to normality.

leftclicktic I posted last night that I think we have a common friend in the shape of Nid. I remember a post that you made long ago about the blue pipe across from the joker. Familiar territory for me although I suspect that I may be a generation behind you. Just started posting this weekend and having lurked for a long time joining in is great fun.

Hail Hail brother and onto Wembelee.

    Hail Hail to the posties!

  14. Paul, your comments regarding motivation are correct, however in my view they are well paid plus it is the Managers job to motivate.

This however can be difficult as the only true motivators are fear or money,so in the case of the footballer then visibility and curtailment of subsequent progression should be used.

Yesterday reminded me of the Inverness game where we lost the Title due to ( alleged)over indulgence in the Corinthian and lack of intent.

Tommy Burns was correct they need to want to win so get Celts in the team, people who will hurt as supporters.

Yesterday we had Lennon,Mulgrew,Stokes, Thats it.

St Mirren had D.Lennon,Tommy Craig and 5/6 either ex Celts or fans and did it not show.

Our Manager has surrounded himself with pals and compliant pals at that, and it does not work correctly.

Of course we did well vs Barca but again the motivation here was self projection by the players for their advancement, not for the guys paying fortunes to go to Spain, etc.as was evident in the Nou Camp as they trooped off without as much as recognition for a superb support.

Celtic are my team and has been before the current crop were born, therefore I resent the lack of effort by people who have little idea what the jersey means to those watching.

Neil Lennon should know this and should not allow this gross devaluation of the jersey and what it represents.

Many of todays crop are passing thru and it shows,of course this has happened before as is evident in the form of Burley,Provan,McLeod,Hartson,McInally,Walker,Nicholas, who used the club and now do not have a kind word to say.

Hindsight is great but I would rather have played a young committed team and lost than have my intelligence insulted by a thoughtless selection and a non committed performance.

    Good luck to St Mirren.

You can talk about tactics until you’re blue in the face, but football is all about players. You can give instructions to them, but it’s down to the players to go and do it.

That is true, but, this makes a coach’s role irrelevant, which it isn’t. The coach needs to devise a strategy, and the players need to execute the strategy.

Seriously…. what is our strategy for playing diddy teams? I cant discern it from our games. It can’t possibly be that all of the players know it, but are not following it…. in my opinion, there is a definite problem with the coaching/tactical side of our game.

It must have been on the St Mirren dressing room door.

  34. mike in toronto- The flatness of the crowd is another factor, and we were very flat yesterday, well apart from the usual moaners.

Witness a few weeks ago v Motherwell, humdrum 0-0 up until they get a joke penalty, big FF pulls off a wonderful save from Hateley, the crowd roar into the life like it was a European night and within a few moments a flowing move results in Hooper scoring a quite brilliant goal.

Clearly illustrated how much the atmosphere contributes to the team belief, which was non existent yesterday- apart from those following the Buddies.
