Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

The simple fact is that it costs more to run CFC than we receive from playing in the SPL. Not only that, it becomes a Catch-22. If we reduce costs to fit in with our current playing environment, which essentially means in the playing staff as it’s the most flexible, then a huge part of our income will drop – since our fans mostly demand a higher quality of player than merely SPL.

  5. Just a wee thought on poor old Bo and last night.

Are some people really saying that faced with a one on one with the goalkeeper from about 6 yards – with no other defender in front of him – that Bo decided

“You know what! I’ll just fall down because I know that there is a defender behind me.”

“We’ll definitely get a penalty because we always get decisions like these in Scotland.”

“We’ll definitely score from the penalty because we never miss penalties.”

“The manager will be so happy that I passed up a goal scoring opportunity to gamble on all of the above that I will be a shoe in for the starting line up on Saturday.”

    Sounds plausible?

  10. Darwins beautiful idea is clearly a simpleton. Berget did better up front than Stokes, far more people wanted Stokes hooked last night, can’t be doing with the simpletons who think you need 2 or even 1 striker up front when plenty of the top teams in Europe play one up front or zero up front. Stuck in the past. Darwin see how many votes you get for manager on this site, my guess is you and any other anti tactics posters would fall in last place whilst me and any one else who likes 4-3-2-1 or to a lesser extent 4-2-3-1 would be near the top. Yet you go on thinking the world is wrong and you are right.

I also wonder about the motivations of some posters hatred towards Ronny. Because he is not Scottish or Northern Irish and a Celtic fan we are saying he is a dud? Mowbray had a poor start in the league, Neil had a poor start in Europe, and Gordon had a poor Start in Europe, yet those other men got more time either because they where Celtic men or shared the same nationality as our selves. Look how much time Mowbray got and he got a much bigger budget, why are some of the tubes on here like Darwin and What is the Stars not giving the man the same time they gave Mowbray, is it all a case of Mowbray was our first rubbish manager for a while and now because of Mowbray no one should get any time, or is it a case of something more sinister? Something like subconscious cultural privilege for Scots and or folk who are perceived to be part of the Celtic family?

I will say this Jock was not a born Celt yet became loved as one, surely Ronny deserves a few years to attempt to build a strong team like Jock, or are we less open minded as a support than we used to be under Jock’s time?

  11. Having witnessed the performance at Murrayfield against Legia I had been looking forward to Celtic in the Europa League.

I feel sorry for Legia and especially their fans. If we had just won 6-1 against someone we would have been looking forward with confidence to the Champions League group stage.

Its a true saying better being lucky than good.

I think we will beat Maribor especially with the second leg at Celtic Park.

But competing in the premier football tournament in the world is totally different.

I can’t say I’m looking forward to this Celtic side taking on the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, Bayern, PSG, etc as I think Ronny & his squad will be way out of their depth.

  12. McCann was a good player – no doubt. Apparently he was desperate to join Celtic but it just didn’t happen.

Maybe he decided – in for a penny, in for a pound – that since they were paying his wages he might as well embrace the whole hun sub-culture.

But what a high-octane anti Celtic performance that was last night. Ultra rage from a standing start.

  13. I have just had another, close look at `Derk`s Dive`. I am left with question: Why would Derk have dived when all he had to do was poke the ball into the net from two or three yards? It was much easier to score from where he was than from the penalty spot….AND the offender could still have been ordered off.

    Cheerio for now,

    JJ

I hate to say this but it looks as though Lennoxtown has become an costly white elephant. I can’t really say that I’ve noticed a big improvement in the overall standard of the players who train there which we were promised would happen when it opened. I’m struggling to think of a single player whose skill and fitness levels have significantly improved because of the facilities at Lennoxtown. Perhaps we should look for a less expensive option as one way of reducing our running costs?

I tried to put it simply earlier on.

If people support DD and PL, that’s fine.

    Im not of that opinion.

Celtic are becoming a bourgeois led dictatorship under the PLC

It all suits and ties and limos, as youd expect.

Im not buying into that for a second.

Whatever the rationalisation, ive no time for businessmen who want to make money out of Celtic.

And of course, us working class supporters who don’t own any shares, shouldn’t get a say.

    What do we know eh.

    ===============

    Bollox!

There are some rich supporters and some not so rich and some who by comparison are poor.

I’m not so rich but can afford a few shares, not many, but bought because I like what I think Celtic stand for over the piece. I pay for an Overseas Season Ticket that lets someone who cannot afford to attend a game to go in my place when I’m away . Its not much only a bit extra on what I would pay Celtic TV but its something in line with what I think Celtic represent on the whole – something worthwhile to be associated with.

I can afford my few shares and my stays away because I worked hard all my life so don’t give me that working man crap. All Celtic supporters are working men if fortune has favoured them and many are where it has not.

Its not a trade union set up. Football is a social enterprise caught up in big business. Its a balancing act and a difficult one at this point in time. So if the guy riding the high wire (who works long hours by the way – I saw PL’s wife waiting patiently for him in the Celtic supporters club car park one evening whilst he attended a CST meeting) makes a few bob then good luck to him.

The biggest danger Celtic face is the mad idea that it consists of two entities The Management (The Board or PLC) and The Workers (The Support) and it bedevils both sides.

I’ve had to work on both sides of that debate in my working life and it cost my career a bit to achieve what was right and just, but I know from experience not just the madness of the idea but the price it extracts.

Mark 3:25. If its good enough for him its good enough for us.

The trouble Ronny has unlike the other Celtic managers you mentioned he has not managed at a very high level.

I know you’ll counter by saying neither had Lennon but he had to prove himself over 9 games before he got the gig full time and he also played at a high level in Europe, working under two very good, very different managers.

Ronny will get time but none of us know are quite sure how good/ how able he is.

  25. After skillfully getting past the Legia hurdle on away goals I predict another victory and the Slovs of Maribor.

The lady on the shortbread sports news just now interviewing the Legia boss was leading was him down the road of blaming Celtic for their woes . And he was happy to say how dissapointed he was that Celtic didnt even contact them to comiserate with them or show a little sympathy.

Well I’ve always said that we wouldn’t really know how successful a venture it was until it had been open for at least 6 years, as that’s when we’ll start to see guys at 18,19,20 that had come right through it from the beginning. I view it’s primary role as being bringing youth to fruition.

It’s secondary role is attracting players. Do you think players that are faced with choices of where to go aren’t at least attracted by top class facilities? It’s got to help. As to the benefit in terms of improving fitness and eg speed of 1st teamers I would say that depends on what they’re doing, not where they are doing it.

*mibbees that was why NFL and his management team were packaged and a new team who had experience on bringing youth through were brought in.

Take Jim McGuiness for example, he is now with the 1st team and another coach who specialises in stats is also brought in…….the new Celtic are on their way and Ronny is here for much longer than some think.

  28. Hey, Lawwel, so you say you are transparent and honest with the Celtic fans really? I have never seen you post your PIN number on the Celtic website…something too hide? No wonder I gave up watching Celtic when Charles Patrick was forced out the door, probably related to Lawwel, even though he wasn’t born.
