Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

  1. Further FFin’ Notes from Underground:

“Lets give Legia and its supporters every piece of dirt we have on ‘sporting integrity FC’ interpolating ‘Clarification FC’, perhaps having others highlighting their dodgy dealings to the wider world will hasten their demise.

Further is anyone clear on who actually tipped the hooped horrors the wink in terms of Legia’s admin error and whether they actually raised an objection, something really stinks here?

Was this a pre planned exercise involving collusion with UEFA officials? Conceived in the likelihood that they might lose to Legia, they had a get out of Jail card in their hip pocket?

Legia need to expose the devils eleven, what lies behind the mask has to be exposed to a wider audience, exposing the lengths they are willing to go to will help our cause in terms of the wider world recognising what those scumbags and their cabal have inflicted on us!”

Excellent post and straight to the point.

I just quit facebook. A sevco mate of a mate (if you know how it works)posted stuff about Celtic having no shame and went on one helluva rant. This total stranger’s hurt and angst was almost tangible. Trying my best to keep things clean and factual for obvious reasons, I replied with one short comment regarding Oldco and their renaged debts. What came back at me was off the scale bile, straight out of FF.

    Enough of that.

  4. Kevtic,

It’s not about the competing in the CL….it’s about the money, just as it is for all teams outside the Top 4 in England.

Success this year will help us to maintain what we have and stop the downsizing and invest. To me next season CL income is crucial as it will ensure domestic dominance as a Sevco return will be a bigger challenge than many of us expect.

Maribor is a 50 50 tie ; we need a striker or we will probably go out.

Lawwell has one last chance to help Ronny and the club. Let’s see if he takes it.

As things stand I think we would develop better in the EL than CL and be more CL competitive next year. Something that happened in Lenny’s first year.

Maribor beating us is not out of the question of course, unless we can reach a higher level in a week.

  7. CELTIC Football Club has today released the following statement.

“We have been advised by UEFA of the decision of the UEFA Appeals Body to dismiss an appeal by Legia Warsaw. We understand that Legia Warsaw may appeal that decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

“For our part, we can only proceed on the basis of UEFA’s decisions and the fixtures announced by them and, therefore, we must now prepare for our match against NK Maribor next week.”

Meanwhile, St Johnstone have appealed the red card on MacKay last night. meaning that he will be available for them on Saturday against Hamilton.

In addition, Ronny Deila has said he will look at the Boerrigter incident again and have “a little talk” with Bo if he thinks he dived.

“I want fair play but I have to see it before I can say anything,” said Deila.

“I haven’t seen it but as I said yesterday, there will be decisions for and against Celtic and over 38 games the best team will win.

“But I don’t like diving. I don’t want to cheat.”

I agree with most of your points. I too think we will beat Maribor over 2 legs.

It was always going to take time to make the transition from the way we played under Neil to Ronny Deila’s vision for the team.

I have faith in the guy – to me he is raising the benchmark, like last night when talking about James F, saying he should look at the likes of Ribery and Robben and the yards and work they put in.

I noticed a few weeks back when the talk of Sammi returning surfaced. Ronny Deila said yes, possible, open to everything and ‘everyone knows he is a quality attacker, and he might be prepared to work on the defensive aspect of his game and if that was the case then perhaps,’ or words to that effect. The message could not have been clearer.

I like his outlook. Whether he can deliver or not remains to be seen, but the way he wants Celtic to go is the way I want Celtic to go – High tempo play, fast attacks, fast regroups, bringing youth through.

Even if Ronny Delia fails, I still see this as our future while we are chained to the SPFL.

    Come on

Lennoxtown is a great big pitch where the players could have their cokey-back fights and crossbar challenge after their arduous 10:30-12:00 training session

    Until Mr Deila arrived.

  23. The purpose of Lennoxtown, or the academy of any major football club, doesn’t have as its sole objective the development of all players into that particular team; that’s pie in the sky stuff.

The primary target is to produce some who will go on to play for the first team but it’s also to produce footballers who can then be sold on to finance the continued development of those who follow.

In my opinion Lennoxtown is doing fine in this regard.

  25. It seems that the sevconians blame Celtic for their demise. It appears that we somehow forced them to spend millions of £s that they had only borrowed . It seems that it was Celtic that stopped them paying their taxes and many other debts . And it was Celtic that also made them use dubious tax dodging payments or “loans” so they could afford top players that helped them win trophies. And it ended with the huns falling into a cunningly prepared Celtic trap. A trap which led to the death of their team . Evil evil timmy barstewards.

Now if you want to engage in the matter of PL’s salary I do have questions which is how much does footballing success play its part in deciding what his bonus should be?

My experience of rewarding performance is that the factors that are used to reward performance tend to be the ones that are easiest to measure not the ones that are true indicators of success.

Thus for example a person gets rewarded for keeping costs down because costs are easy to measure in £p terms one year against another.

The measure should be what is the cost of keeping costs down and at what point does keeping costs down become counter productive?

The thing is I have no idea on what basis PL is rewarded, but I suspect it is on what is easiest to measure not what actually impacts on the business overall – until a negative impact manifests itself.

There should be a relationship between football performance and financial that is measureable even if only that any bonus is reduced on any of the following grounds.(not volunteered) if we

Fail to win SPFL Title say 50%

Fail to qualify for CL say 25%

Fail to qualify for EL say 12%

It is the sort of issue that if folk were really concerned about as an issue no matter whoever is Celtic’s CEO, they could ask for in resolution to an AGM……

I certainly would be quite happy to see some effort put in that direction by those who have a problem with the remuneration paid to the CEO.
