Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

Well while we have all been calling for a striker to be signed before the Maribor match it looks as though it is another midfielder we are trying to bring in and there is speculation that it will be another loan deal. H.H.

One of the saddest stories in the media this week.

I hope these are recovered and placed back where they belong ASAP.

It puts into perspective what a few clowns say about a Celtic player going down a bit easy and a Legia player playing for 4 mins who was banned.

These buildings should be sacred and untouched. Very annoyed at this item of news.

  11. The mainstream media attack Celtic at every opportunity.

It really shows you plainly, how sectarian scoddland is.

    They hate everyone.

I wish I didn’t live in such a cesspit as scoddland.

Its depressing in the extreme, the lengths they will go to, to uphold their antiquated hatred.

  12. The White Paper was easy – Scotland’s Future! White. Nae bother I can read that. Bored the life out of me in parts but backed with further investigation I jumped from No to Yes. Mainly due to attending a couple of meetings at time attended by both sides, reading online info and emailing MP’s MSP’s etc.

Then someone hits me with ‘The Wee Blue Book’! WTF I think to myself. With tinted green specs I struggle to comprehend reading such a document entitled thus. But hey I took the leap of faith again. And I’m only further convinced.

So if you are undecided give it a read. If you are entrenched in your view don’t bother.

Interesting. I do like African midfielders generally – big, strong and athletic which is what we are missing in there.

I’m not getting animated about the loan system. I think it will feature highly across the game as a trickle down effect of the rich boys hoovering up. I wish to hell we had Amido on loan with a return ticket.

Need a striker. The fellas on KDS do a great job identifying foreign talent within our range with cracking scoring records. Why is it so blooming difficult at the club level to make this happen ?

    Tom…,

No one suggested the press be denied access to Celtic Park so no idea why you would claim it was suggested, my suggestion was to make other areas available to the hacks with agenda, a quick idea would be restricted viewing seats and make sure they know if they are going to report in accurately then there was no point in denying a journalist a place in the press area paul67 and some other Celtic web site administrators would be very happy to take their places, bottom line being if the hacks are going to report like supporters then treat them as such. Maybe even give FOCUS their details eh

We the supporters must see it differently from Rony and JC we want a striker but they seem to see a midfielder as priority. Mind you if we can sign a play maker it would help Rony with the way he wants us to play. H.H.
