Celtic growing into their skin, more on Maribor

1610

You could see Celtic mature during last night’s game.  They were defensively solid during the first half, and Craig Gordon was assured throughout, but for the best part of an hour we scarcely tested St Johnstone.

That changed after the goal, which arrived just as St Johnstone were enjoying their best period of the game.  Kris Commons didn’t have his most productive night but it was his pressing which led to the break through.

During the second half Ronny Deila replaced Commons, Stokes and the tiring Forrest with Boerrigter, Inge Berget and Kayal.  Even before the home team were reduced to 10 men moments after the final substitution, Celtic were clearly in a more comfortable shape.  Players were finding space which didn’t exist earlier.

Maribor made seven changes for last night’s Slovenian Super Cup Final, which they won comfortably against opponents who are pointless in the league after four games.  Celtic’s scouts are unlikely to have learned too much useful information ahead of next weeks’ game.

What is clear about Maribor is their aerial threat.  Five of their 12 goals this season have been headers, which may influence Ronny’s team selection.  They also break quickly down the flanks, so maybe a 4-5-1, offering protection to our full backs, is the way to go.  Hopefully we’ve learned we’re not quite ready for 4-3-3 away from home in Europe.

The Slovenian media are dismissive of Celtic’s chances, encouraged, it seems, but continuing celebrations from Maribor that they pulled an “easy” draw.  I suspect they’ve yet to see the Celtic who will take the field on Wednesday.

  5. I think the UEFA verdict changes the entire landscape of the Season. The knowledge that we have a couple of months of European Football, the likelihood that we will be spending a few million to strengthen our squad. Having wee James back and hopefully Brooney before Group stages, all very positive developments. I expect Celtic Park to be buzzing this Saturday.

Celtic have maintained a dignified silence while Speirs now stirs the sectarian pot.

How to manufacture involvement of Celtic in an issue with which they had nothing to do.

Celtic are mere spectators in this farce.

An opinion piece, based on nothing but conjecture, from a blatant bigot.

Can,t believe this article we were crap ,last night and only piss poor saints defence, won us the game, yet another negative team selection, from a guy who said we were going to play attacking football(as if we were a defensive team before the dick arrived)

then he takes off our only striker at 1-0,what if we lost a goal we would have been short up front, and may have dropped points, this tool should go or be sackec

  14. The Spiers article ably demonstrates that despite all his faux intellect Spiers is still partial to a little lazy journalism from time to time, conveniently hiding the facts that might make his entire article pointless.

Why ask what Celtic would do? You may as well how Man Utd, Barcelona, Real Madrid etc would react. Celtic had no part in the actions of Legia nor the UEFA decision, we simply played two games of football.

Lurking now most of the time because of work commitments although I do try to keep up a bit and also there is nothing new for me to say and I have no wish to regurgitate my long held views on the whole Sevco disaster which have stood the test of time and are still worryingly current.I did, however, pick up on the issue of delisting which is not a bad play really in their position.

Delisting is not uncommon and requires 75% shareholder approval. The company NOMAD needs to be involved in the delisting strategy which should consider the treatment of shareholders who are disadvantaged by not having a liquid trading position. Some companies offer a tender offer to their minority shareholders who can exchange their shares for a specific (low) amount. It must also be noted that most institutional investors are simply not allowed to hold shares in private companies.

The institutional shareholders will be an issue for RIFC although if the NOMAD is seriously looking at delisting you can bet your pension that they will have found out by now and be seeking exits. This might explain the share price downturn and the re entry of Chico who would lose out badly in this scenario as one of his prime goals was to maximise his penny share sale position. His Soros strategy was therefore trying to offer/promote a “ continue in AIM position” which would allow him a liquid share value position.

I conclude therefore that Wallace, as I have heard, has been unsuccessful in his attempts at raising funds in the city and therefore the principal reason for staying on AIM, the ability to raise money, has gone. All that is left is expense and regulation. So now we can all look forward to even less transparency than before!

The saga continues on and off the field!”
