Celtic have enough in the tank

413

The most important aspect about team plan for tonight will be the balancing act between aggression and discipline.  Celtic need to get in about Legia without losing discipline.  Legia roped us in perfectly last week.  A buoyant home crowd fed off meaty challenges but when the red mist rose, they adopted choir boy looks.  We didn’t.

Celtic need to disorientate Legia in a similar way; get physical, expect the same back, but remain in control of events.  Efe Ambrose’ red card was critical to the outcome of the game in Warsaw, let’s work on their less-controlled players to see if we can tempt them into a similar fate.

An early goal would be nice but it it’s not necessary.  90 minutes is a long time to defend a lead and we should remember how last year Shakhter Karagandy kept things tight for 44 minutes before losing 3-0.  If we can’t get an early goal it’s just as important to get Legia chasing the ball and making tackles.

Legia’s first half game plan will be to keep it tight frustrate the crowd.  If there’s little penetration in the opening period we need to stick with the players, give them encouragement whenever possible – this works.

Beside our normal game plan there are a couple of objectives we should be looking for:

Get into the box.  Despite having limited possession, Legia did this perfectly last week.  If you’re in the box you force defenders into committing to challenges they would rather not.  Make getting into the box a territorial objective and we’ll get a penalty.  Or two.

Shoot often.  Both our goals away from home in Europe this season have come from deflections, from limited opportunities.

Legia will tire late in the game.  Teams always do when they have to traverse the Continent before a game.  Teams also tire when the opposition have the bulk of possession and move the ball, and therefore opponents, around quickly.  Keep the ball moving, bring on four fresh legs with 20 minutes to go and exploit this natural advantage.

Play it clever, and we’ll have enough in the tank.

    …………………………………………………

How the hell did you do that?

Your team is pretty close to what i think mate but your presentation blows my effort out of sight!

Did Twardzik not struggle a bit during the pre-season friendlies at full back though and young O’Connell……well……we cannot afford to lose an away goal so i would feel better with a less experimental rearguard!

Getting flung in against Barca did not faze JK so perhaps that is not fair on them.

  3. Aye get yer Celtic TV here get yer Celtic TV here

Hamilton Dundee Motherwell Thistle Ross County etc at home for the rest of your seasons viewing is tremendous value for £80

  4. Anybody confirm you can use west turnstiles for west stand? Sounds daft but the murrayfield faq suggests they are mainly for hospitality suites.

    Dear mr. Lawwell

if I boost the funds by giving you my £40 (£80 for a decent picture), can we get to keep big Fraser and Virgil?

  6. Robert Tressell.

I agree we both want the same thing. A winning, competitive team to enjoy. A team we can be proud of.

I think all fans will concur with that.

I know there are no guarantees and the same applies to this moneyball malarkey. It is actually failing at present as is evident by the deteroration in the quality of our team.

You may be right that the moneyball theory is not being administered properly but if it isn’t PL is not bothered about changing things as his huge bonus is still forthcoming.

I really do think we could afford to buy better quality without threatening the financial stability of the club.

    Anyway, tonight.

Please get through to the next round Celtic !!!

He talks about transfers amongst other topics

One thing he did says is that we’re looking for players and could have had some already, but he wanted to wait so we can make sure we get the best players we can. He also says (not for the first time) that there’s a lot of work going on behind the scenes to get players in.

Worth highlighting this because it shows a different picture to what’s often painted on here.

In other news, ‘mon the hoops. I’ll stick my neck out by calling for the same line up tonight as last week with Kayal into midfield, Izzy to Lb and Mulgrew to defence.

Same formation please but much more compact and no silly passes in our own half.

  8. Spirit of Freedom bus has arrived, parked outside the West Stand. Stuck behind the team bus along the M8, they took the airport cut off with a police escort. I went the Calders Road (A71 using bus lanes) and arrived 5 mins before the team!

Good news, the game is being shown live to ALL subscribers tonight, according to Celtic TV. What a turnaround. Murryfield must be a sellout. :-))

    He can’t do it.

SadiesBhoy reporting from Murrayfield. Top deck of stadium is open with lots of stewards deployed. So looking fprward to a big crowd. Lots of Legia fans around with some Polish Celtic fans. Relaxed atmosphere in the Capital. Embra cops showing Glasgow cousins how to do it. Mannerly, friendly and helpful.

Shook hands with Izzy before game and welcomed John Collins, Ronny and some of the players off the team bus. Feeling optimistic!!!

  16. I simply cannot believe the transfer of FF is being discussed at boardroom level immediately prior to the biggest game of the season.

What the hell is happening at Celtic?

The fact that we’re discussing with Southampton is incredibly ironic, given that they’re near certain candidates for relegation having sold all of their best players. Well at least FF is going to get plenty of exposure, even during the highlights programmes.

Paul67’s articles in the past week have set the tone at the club by displaying the same levels of cheap and lazy complacency as those on the field of play and at boardroom level.

If the performance tonight mirrors today’s post I fear we’re in for a real hiding. Legia might even take all of their chances this time having been so profligate last week such that teams have came back from heavier deficits, e.g. QPR losing a tie after having won their 1st leg 6-2 back in the 80s I vaguely remember.

  17. thunder road

How ye doin’ buddy. Aye, the thunder will return and we will blast them off the face of the planet. Hopefully!!! :-))

Who posted ‘Bring back Jock Broon’ above???

There are many things that Celtic could change; some changes might even improve us.

But some things are a step too far.

    As Jock himself famously said.

Had he rescued a child from a burning building, media would have reported it as ‘man abducts child’ and too mmany Celtic fans of the time bought into it.
