Celtic have enough in the tank

413

The most important aspect about team plan for tonight will be the balancing act between aggression and discipline.  Celtic need to get in about Legia without losing discipline.  Legia roped us in perfectly last week.  A buoyant home crowd fed off meaty challenges but when the red mist rose, they adopted choir boy looks.  We didn’t.

Celtic need to disorientate Legia in a similar way; get physical, expect the same back, but remain in control of events.  Efe Ambrose’ red card was critical to the outcome of the game in Warsaw, let’s work on their less-controlled players to see if we can tempt them into a similar fate.

An early goal would be nice but it it’s not necessary.  90 minutes is a long time to defend a lead and we should remember how last year Shakhter Karagandy kept things tight for 44 minutes before losing 3-0.  If we can’t get an early goal it’s just as important to get Legia chasing the ball and making tackles.

Legia’s first half game plan will be to keep it tight frustrate the crowd.  If there’s little penetration in the opening period we need to stick with the players, give them encouragement whenever possible – this works.

Beside our normal game plan there are a couple of objectives we should be looking for:

Get into the box.  Despite having limited possession, Legia did this perfectly last week.  If you’re in the box you force defenders into committing to challenges they would rather not.  Make getting into the box a territorial objective and we’ll get a penalty.  Or two.

Shoot often.  Both our goals away from home in Europe this season have come from deflections, from limited opportunities.

Legia will tire late in the game.  Teams always do when they have to traverse the Continent before a game.  Teams also tire when the opposition have the bulk of possession and move the ball, and therefore opponents, around quickly.  Keep the ball moving, bring on four fresh legs with 20 minutes to go and exploit this natural advantage.

Play it clever, and we’ll have enough in the tank.

Absolute rubbish. The flight time from Warsaw to Edinburgh is around 2 hours 30 mins which they did yesterday. I expect hey will have stayed in a comfortable hotel not too far from Murrayfield so if they are tired it will be because too many of them were tempted by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe activities and not an overly long continental flight.

“Teams also tire when the opposition have the bulk of possession and move the ball, and therefore opponents, around quickly. Keep the ball moving, bring on four fresh legs with 20 minutes to go and exploit this natural advantage”.

Only problem with this is they are not playing Barcelona, they are playing us and knocking the ball around at a high tempo is not a style which comes easily to most of our players. Also, our opponents may be tempted to bring on four fresh legs to negate any advantage our four fresh legs may bring.

Tonight is a hundred times harder than the Shaktar Karagandy second leg because Legia Warsaw are a much better side, we are weaker than this time last year and the game is at Murrayfield where they will be backed by a decent and highly vocal support. Our players may play out of their collective skins and give us the sort of dream result we all crave for and our fans can play an important part in that but let’s get real ffs.

  5. Heard a young Israeli soldier interviewed on Channel 4 news last night. Quite cocky and obviously hyped after seeing ‘action’

Interviewer asked him “how he felt when he saw the dead and wounded Palestinian children?” He gave the ‘defending the nation’ line.

Interviewer repeated the question “how did he feel when he saw the dead and wounded Palestinian children?…………..”I was following orders”……….Where have we heard that before?

I am not going for the Gyle/tram option as it takes too long to get a tram back to the car.

There are a number of streets off Costorphine Road or St John’s Road where you can park and it is then about a 20 minute walk to the stadium. The advantage being that after the game you are straight back on the road and out onto the Motorway.

I watched that game last night no way was it a red, mr Beaton done his job as he was told, and there will be many after him will do the same thing, if you look at the last two years of this new clubs existence the have had more than a helping hand from our games referees, for some reason the leaders and officials up here in level playing field Scotland pander to this new club, what ever the reason is I could only hazard to guess, hey! May be I’m paranoid, what ever happened to that word paranoid? It disappeared when RFC died, and it became OBSESSED, lol.

The game in Warsaw was lost well before Efe saw red as anyone with knowledge of the Celtic players knew when the team was announced. It became a farce as players were sent out to use the most important game of the season to try and adapt to new systems then flawed tactics of which they were all to aware.

I know the players will not let us down tonight lets hope the manager does not hinder thier chances.

Starry – what I am saying is that there will be no big revolution. It is incredibly difficult to remove a board unless there is a clear financial threat to the club. What we have here is deliberate mismanagement, Thats not enough to take people to the car park.

What will happen is a long and slow painful decline, with supporters losing heart and simply giving up on the club because those that run it are effectively abusing them.

It will take a few more years but the club is in an awful decline for no good reason.

HT – naw he was reading between the lines at CP. Hasnt it been heartening to see PL stand side by side with Ronny (whats that – oh he hasnt!)

Agree entirely. Unless there is potential for asset stripping, I don’t know what motive would be for deliberate mismanagement.

As I posted a few days ago. Without a radical change of strategy, Genteel soccer poverty of the 1940s, 50s and early 60s is coming to us very soon.

  19. Thinking even a half decent pub team would beat this lot tonight.

Celtic should wipe the floor with Legia Warsaw.

Check their results in Europe over last 25 years……..makes even Celtic’s wretched Champions League campaign from last season look half decent.

Reckon Ronny and Johnny could go from strength to strength if they can negotiate this hurdle.

History is against Celtic, as I don’t think they have ever beaten a Polish team in a competitive or non competitive fixture.

    Time to make history Celtic……

If the revisionists in our midst can rewrite it then making it should be easier.

Come on You Bhoys In Green.

I think we might win but I also think we lack discipline to hold a lead. All outcomes are possible but the most likely is that Celtic will go out. Realistic 2-1 to Celtic but have we practised pens?

I’ve been to Qua on a couple of ocassions and always been impressed by the meals they serve up. They used to do a two course “pre-theatre” deal which included a drink. £4.75 for a pint is just taking the piss for a place that’s nearer duke street than buchanan street. Did you go dutch for the meal?

It was the wrong team and the players let themselves, the clubs and us the fans down. But if Efe hadn’t been sent off we would have probably walked away with the tie with a 2-1 scoreline which wouldn’t be a bad result away in Europe.

P.S. I don’t blame Efe for being sent off (although he didn’t have to go to ground), I blame the poor passing that forced him into making a last man challenge. I think it was Mulgrew, who had a horror show the full match.

We didn’t play well, and even with ten men could have closed the game out at 2-1. That shows they aren’t up to much – all we need to do (and needed to do, that must have been known before the match) is to close down Radovic.

Surely the FF to Soton stories are premature?

Surely we won’t have Gordon in goal tonight?

Never heed premature. I true it is pathetic that PL can only get £8,000,000 from a club awash with money.

Rye catcher, Celtic shouldn’t be wiping the floor with Legia but they should be polishing the surface in an efficient manner after a more comfortable away leg.

I must be reading it wrongly. One of the players in my Volleyball team was a member of the Galsgow Polis Armed Response Team in the late 80s early 90s and they were not routinely armed but had to wait for a call and approval before getting their weapons issued.

You seem to be suggesting that our Armed Response Unit is no longer in “response” to anything but are out on routine patrol.

For the avoidance of doubt, I am in favour of protecting our police. That is why I want them under close political supervision.
