Celtic have enough in the tank

413

The most important aspect about team plan for tonight will be the balancing act between aggression and discipline.  Celtic need to get in about Legia without losing discipline.  Legia roped us in perfectly last week.  A buoyant home crowd fed off meaty challenges but when the red mist rose, they adopted choir boy looks.  We didn’t.

Celtic need to disorientate Legia in a similar way; get physical, expect the same back, but remain in control of events.  Efe Ambrose’ red card was critical to the outcome of the game in Warsaw, let’s work on their less-controlled players to see if we can tempt them into a similar fate.

An early goal would be nice but it it’s not necessary.  90 minutes is a long time to defend a lead and we should remember how last year Shakhter Karagandy kept things tight for 44 minutes before losing 3-0.  If we can’t get an early goal it’s just as important to get Legia chasing the ball and making tackles.

Legia’s first half game plan will be to keep it tight frustrate the crowd.  If there’s little penetration in the opening period we need to stick with the players, give them encouragement whenever possible – this works.

Beside our normal game plan there are a couple of objectives we should be looking for:

Get into the box.  Despite having limited possession, Legia did this perfectly last week.  If you’re in the box you force defenders into committing to challenges they would rather not.  Make getting into the box a territorial objective and we’ll get a penalty.  Or two.

Shoot often.  Both our goals away from home in Europe this season have come from deflections, from limited opportunities.

Legia will tire late in the game.  Teams always do when they have to traverse the Continent before a game.  Teams also tire when the opposition have the bulk of possession and move the ball, and therefore opponents, around quickly.  Keep the ball moving, bring on four fresh legs with 20 minutes to go and exploit this natural advantage.

Play it clever, and we’ll have enough in the tank.

IGC – I will check back to see what that handsome chap posted, but I was astonished to see managers from other teams now openly discussing this as a tactic they need to deploy when they go there. Don’t fancy playing poker with Robbie Neilson…

Stubbs’ comments after the game were good, but would’ve been better if he’d said they’d been training all week playing 10 against 11 but this time it didn’t work, next time hopefully it will. :o)

    Natknow,

Not thousands dead.Just to clarify, the first wave of attacks in the “Shock and Awe”tactics from America and Britain in the last Iraq war, killed 25,000 civilians. Are you seriously telling me that in 3 weeks of fighting, the unending missile bombardment in a densely populated area such as Gaza that has culminated in over 1,000 deaths has been”Indiscriminate”?.

The Israelis might be a lot of things, but bad marksmen they aint.

My final reply today on this

“No you did not introduce it,but were only too keen to jump in to decry and mock someone with a different viewpoint from you and Natknow.Too late to hold the hands up claiming innocence.

Your trustworthy sources !!!!!?Hamas give out the figures.

I dont try and score cheap points from human disasters. In fact I never bring them onto the blog, but I refuse to sit and read ill informed, one sided vitriol that passes for comment from some on here.”

I have no problems with different viewpoints expressed with decency. The Original Poster does not have that track record and, contrary to your claim, you did sit and read and let pass his ill-informed, one sided stuff. I am not claiming innocence, I am not guilty of the charge you try to level.

If you think the UN is a front for Hamas and just blindly accepts their propaganda then you are too far gone to be saved. I doubt that is your position, though you came close to expressing it thus. It is possible to oppose Hamas, Al Qaeda, ISIS, Boko Haram and all of the other villains, and still be opposed to the IDF Action. That is an attitude that is difficult to pigeon-hole as one-sided. Are you not the one taking sides here?

Now, my team is playing tonight in an important match. It is not as important as The Middle East issues but it is why I am here on this blog. I will leave this topic to you.

Football in its rush to collect commercial gold has forgotten that as an industry it’s is totally dependent on other clubs providing competition and so is interdependent.

Robbing smaller clubs of their share of the vast wealth that the industry creates is ultimately self defeating and instead of most of that wealth ending up as four unused cars on some star’s driveway it should be pumped around the game to keep it alive.and healthy.

Of course when you get FIFA or UEFA officials enjoying first go at the crumbs from the rich club and rich players table or is that highest indebted clubs and rich players table change is not going to be quick.

For a look at the UEFA fate facing Celtic in the next 5 years look at the yo yo profile of Ajax in the CL over the last 10.

Where Celtic find themselves just now, even if we pull a rabbit out the hat tonight is a result of the built in imbalances besetting the game that dictate the policy that no one likes.

The consequences of that policy might be lessened by a better signing or good coaching but we will always be at a disadvantage until the structural factors change.

  9. On the way home from work. Buzzing for the game. You just can’t beat going to watch the Hoops!

I was saddened by JImbo67’s goodbye post and hold out hope that he will just take a sabbatical and return refreshed and revived.

Many posters just slip away without any notice and only after a few weeks does someone ask about them.

It is staggering the names that appeared out of the ether last week after the defeat in Warsaw – names that have been missing in action for a very long time. It was very noticeable that the sentiment from the majority of these MIAs were negative, often in the extreme.

    SSN……breaking news…….

Following the draw for the second round of the arselesstrooser cup, Clyde F.C. are planning to appeal the two red cards which will be shown to their central defenders.

A spokesman said….”We feel that both red cards and the resultant penalties will be harsh”

  12. Hope things go well tonight — we are due some luck and a big result.

We need to put in a good performance for our own self belief.

Plus to gain some satisfaction for all the nonsense some of the LW players have been spouting.

I get the impression they have started to imbibe their own waste water and hopefully that will work for us..

If we fail tonight then I hope we make it a glorious failure.

We need something to get us moving this season.

If we go out EL qualification will be difficult.

And if there is no Euro football this season then a half full CP will be the norm.

Finally I have said enough about the vacuum at the top.

Just hoping we get a break, a good performance and some new heroes.

Sadly I fear we will come close but ultimately fail. The downsizing will take effect. However one should never lose hope.

Play LG, LH and Biton as Tri suggested the other night.

  18. I’d play a mega defensive team, lose that away goal and we are done.

They were ropey at the back so suck them in and hit them, boring but we can’t leave gaps at the back.

  19. Referees are not bothered about Hears training with ten against eleven. Speaking on behalf of the officials, .A.C.H.Eating-Mason said: We have more than one red card up our sleeves.

Seriously, is there any country in the world where such an admission (10 v 11) by another Club wouldn`t draw widespread astonishment?

Read the various comments on Israel/Hamas situation I am a Palestinian sympathiser As I do not like anyone being oppressed However I would encourage those on here with opposing views of the situation to take a rain check on the statistics as both have “exaggerated” PR messages.

On a lighter note as time passes I find myself becoming a little excited and optimistic about tonight – looking for RD to get it right and give us a chance

I saw you guys react to the latest Antifa post during the night.

Antifa was spotted as a “false flag” poster fairly early on in his career. I suspect TSD created him but, whereas TSD does a passable imitation of Kojo/Molly Weir posting, he seems to not be too bothered to keep the tone and spelling of Antifa consistent. I was amazed that he kept up with such an unconvincing false flag but, given the standards being produced on CQN these days, leading to the departure of decent men like JImbo67, it gets harder to spot the obvious imposters from our own genuine eejits.

Anyway, Antifa has joined TSD and Chris Torey in achieving levels of offensiveness that I never thought would be tolerated on here.

    Shame that.

  23. I am just beginning to believe we can actually do it tonight. This is not just wishful thinking.

    a)Their Goalkeeper looked distinctly shaky under the high ball and not particularly confidence inspiring with balls at any other level either;

    b) We started by far the better side but made some inexplicable mistakes;

    c) We played more than half a game with ten men;

    d) This time, we have our incredible support behind us.

    We can do it.

    Neil Lennon was our leader.

    Changed times indeed.

  25. I am hopeful rather than confident about tonight. But I am behind the Celtic team all the way. The guys that take the field to represent our wonderful club will always have that no matter if they are good enough or not.

Tonight may be a good opportunity for Stokesy to come back into the forward options!

Whatever happens tonight I hope the board reconsider their current moneyball strategy and acquire a lot more football ambition.

A club of the stature of celtic should be planning to get OUT of the CL group stages each season and progressing further in the knockout stages and not simply just qualifying for the group stages purely for the money it brings in, with how we fare in the tournament coming a poor second in priority.

    Heres hoping.

    Come on you Celts !!!!!!!

  26. Chris Tory – astonishingly I agree with you. The whole Cultural/pc thing the left took to with gusto once our various leaderships had adopted a centre left position has been a huge distraction from the real enemy – that is the economic illiterates and vested interests of the wealthy convincing us and themselves that inequality would make everyone better off.

    Well done you.

  29. Cliftonville – the moneyball strategy is aimed at achieving football success with limited resources (comparatively) I think our challenge is doing it better and more consistently. For every wamyama we have had a banguras a balde and a few others of similar level.
