Celtic have enough in the tank

413

The most important aspect about team plan for tonight will be the balancing act between aggression and discipline.  Celtic need to get in about Legia without losing discipline.  Legia roped us in perfectly last week.  A buoyant home crowd fed off meaty challenges but when the red mist rose, they adopted choir boy looks.  We didn’t.

Celtic need to disorientate Legia in a similar way; get physical, expect the same back, but remain in control of events.  Efe Ambrose’ red card was critical to the outcome of the game in Warsaw, let’s work on their less-controlled players to see if we can tempt them into a similar fate.

An early goal would be nice but it it’s not necessary.  90 minutes is a long time to defend a lead and we should remember how last year Shakhter Karagandy kept things tight for 44 minutes before losing 3-0.  If we can’t get an early goal it’s just as important to get Legia chasing the ball and making tackles.

Legia’s first half game plan will be to keep it tight frustrate the crowd.  If there’s little penetration in the opening period we need to stick with the players, give them encouragement whenever possible – this works.

Beside our normal game plan there are a couple of objectives we should be looking for:

Get into the box.  Despite having limited possession, Legia did this perfectly last week.  If you’re in the box you force defenders into committing to challenges they would rather not.  Make getting into the box a territorial objective and we’ll get a penalty.  Or two.

Shoot often.  Both our goals away from home in Europe this season have come from deflections, from limited opportunities.

Legia will tire late in the game.  Teams always do when they have to traverse the Continent before a game.  Teams also tire when the opposition have the bulk of possession and move the ball, and therefore opponents, around quickly.  Keep the ball moving, bring on four fresh legs with 20 minutes to go and exploit this natural advantage.

Play it clever, and we’ll have enough in the tank.

    Agree with your general sentiment

However you do not have to be a Holocaust denier to oppose Zionist aggression

That’s the classic Zionist tactic, to equate the two, that to oppose Israel in all its works and pomps is somehow to minimise what the Jewish people suffered in WW2

I despise Zionists for their politics, NOT their religion.

    Anti-Zionism IS NOT anti-Semitism.

  5. Not been on since the 1st leg finished.

Felt so bad about the performance and result but the posters that suddenly appeared on here to have a go was……well…..this kinda sprang to mind

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DTWYQhTT388

Know it is a forum and everyone has entitled to their opinion but……ach……there is clearly no love for Celtic at times.

Anyway…….anybody else feeling optimistic about tonight?

It may just be wishful thinking but i think something special is going to happen……tonight!

It is early days for Ronny Deila and so the team for tonight is going to be pretty unpredictable, but hopefully not as surprising as the 1st leg!

Will he play Berget again….with a week to get to know his teamates under his belt?

    Will Izzy regain a start?

Who is gonna partner VVD in the centre of our defence?

Who is gonna make up the midfield and striking positions?

Regardless of who gets the chance……they all need to bring their A-game…..no passengers and no mistakes.

We need to be deadly tonight.

There will be plenty of time to get 3 goals…..1 about every 30 mins by my counting?

We can do that without throwing the kitchen sink at Legia from the start.

We need to play with patience, discipline and keep our shape to make sure we do not concede.

I think Ronny should be setting 1-0 at half time as a target……any more is a bonus but that 3 goals target needs broke down 1 by 1.

I think setting that target may take a bit of pressure off the team and perhaps make them less inclined to try desperate things……a goal will come if we are patient and players take their chance…..or chances.

    2nd half?

To me, their will be a sense of anticipation from the fans and i reckon Murryfield will be buzzing with anticipation and the players will get that buzz and perhaps it will spook Legia?

We should be looking for that 2nd in about the 1st 15-20mins of the half but still playing with patience and not leaving chasms of space to give opportunity of breaks.

Whether we have got the 2nd by then or not, there are normally some changes made around the 60-70 min mark, so perhaps Ronny has the chance to make a telling change if we have not got that 2nd…..or leave it as it is if we have?

Even if it goes to the last 10 before we get a 2nd…..it sets up a grandstand finish…..perhaps just like Karagandy?

3-0 DOES THE JOB……clean sheet a must though to me……away goal deflates everyone and puts doubt and desperation into play…..composure everywhere tonight and we will do it.

Loads of wishful thinking there eh? :)

    Not impossible though.

Ronny may well be his own man and want to do things his way but i hope he has had a look at the lineups for our better performances last season and goes with as close to that as possible for what may be an invaluable stable foundation.

I know there is no SB or EA tonight so there would need to be changes but i think he should get the team back to what it is more comfortable with for now.

There will be time to put HIS stamp on the team…..perhaps MORE time if we do not get put out.

They were good players. Matthews was linked with top English clubs for example.

  7. Watchin the U.S at the World Cup….. it struck me, what can be done with good management / organisation (i.e Klinsmann)

With players of the ilk of Bedoya, Beasley and Co. there wasn’t a team on the planet that could put 3 or 4 goals past the U.S.

First and foremost that must be the foundation / platform that any team builds from.

I saw you guys react to the latest Antifa post during the night.

Antifa was spotted as a “false flag” poster fairly early on in his career. I suspect TSD created him but, whereas TSD does a passable imitation of Kojo/Molly Weir posting, he seems to not be too bothered to keep the tone and spelling of Antifa consistent. I was amazed that he kept up with such an unconvincing false flag but, given the standards being produced on CQN these days, leading to the departure of decent men like JImbo67, it gets harder to spot the obvious imposters from our own genuine eejits.

Anyway, Antifa has joined TSD and Chris Torey in achieving levels of offensiveness that I never thought would be tolerated on here.

The moneyball strategy is a fanciful non practical concoction by a bean counter.

The last thing I want Celtic to do is spend irresponsibly.

But sometimes you just have to invest that bit more to get better quality.

The standard of player recruited lately, bar a few rare exceptions, has been pitiful.

The club are sound financially with a surplus and have a credit line if really needed.

They just have to up the standard pf our team. Unfortunately nthat means loosen the purse strings a bit.

The club can afford to shop in a better quality market than at present..

And Mr lawell on EPL remuneration??

Sure that doesn’t tie in with the moneyballs strategy !!!!!

I want celtic to compete on the field in every game. Not just if the strategy allows it !!!!

Are we a football club, who according to modern stock market rules is a PLC or are we a PLC who has a wee football team as a means of raising finance to pay bigger renumeration to shareholders ??

    I don’t think we’ve won

A European tie 3 goals down

I’d go as far to say that legia could win this game

Were a poor side and the manager hasn’t had

Long enough to pull off a miracle of historic proportions

This team needs 15-20 million spent on it and dead wood

    Needs cleared out

  22. Clifton – we both want a winning celtic that can compete in Europe. My problem with the approach you suggest is that there are no guarantees in football regardless of how much you spend.

When we bought Sutton and Hartson I think we spent £6 million each on them. Players of that calibre (who came with some question marks over them as you may recall) are not available for that price anymore – and our income has not increased in that time either.

I still think the strategy is broadly right. The execution of it is questionable.
