Celtic have point to prove in Europe

940

Celtic will face their first Champions League qualifying opponents on either 31 July or 1 August but heartbeats among the scouting staff will quicken tonight and tomorrow when every potential opponent will play in the second qualifying round.

A number of potential opponents from eastern and northern Europe are mid-season but all will benefit from successfully coming through two qualifying games before tackling seeded opponents two weeks from now.

It is crucially important that Celtic are ready for this tie.

The final qualifying round, scheduled to take place during the last two weeks in August, will offer a greater challenge on paper but European qualifying games in July are notorious for catching better teams unprepared.

After a credibly, though ultimately unsuccessful, Europa League group campaign last season Celtic’s domestic form clicked into place and we looked like a team capable of becoming champions.  There was some regret that we didn’t hit form early enough to make the most of our European adventure.  Neil Lennon will also be keen to avoid the anaemic performance against Sion, who beat Celtic on aggregate but were subsequently awarded two 3-0 defeats for failing to observe rules.

These Celtic players found hidden depths last season but they have a point to prove in Europe. There is also the nagging suspicion that this Celtic team is more talented that the two Gordon Strachan took to the later stages of the Champions League.

Bring it on.

Get your season ticket and saddle up for the ride.

Gordon Strachan managed to get a tune out of a so-so team.Let’s hope our present Manager can do likewise with a supposedly better set of players?.

  2. Neil Lennon has stated if they dont have any signings going into the Norwich game he will play the CL game with what he has got. Which is not bad considering we have Izzy, Kayal and Commons back to full fitness.

I assume you think we need more than 2 players then if the current squad won’t be good enough to get past the first qualifying round?! Clubs and players are difficult to deal with and unfortunately many players will be hedging their bets to see who else comes in for them and whether we qualify for the CL. Signing up for a qualifier is not that appealing when they may have a potential offer from a club who are already there.

Celtic also have a point to prove in the SPL – win it. The MSM are building us up to win the league by Xmas so that if we dont they’ll take great delight in throwing rotten eggs at us, that would also get the huns back on their side.

  7. To my simple mind, Sevco could only be Rangers if it paid Rangers’ debts, or at least attempted to. Its CVA proposal was laughed out of town and now no one is even asking what they intend to do about the money they owe, football and non-football. There is just an assumption that they will leave those bills unpaid.

They see themselves as Rangers, but without any of the less fancied appendages, such as sanctions from the facilitating SFA or, much worse in my opinion, legally owed taxes and other debts.

    Shame on them.

Should we successfully negotiate the 3rd qualifying round, am I right in thinking we cannot get drawn against ‘non-champions’ in the 4th round, thereby avoiding the likes of Udinese, Lille, Fenerbahce…? That would leave Dinamo Zagreb, Cluj, Zilina, P Belgrade and Helsingborgs (presuming they win their 3rd round ties)…..

THE Scottish Football Association has released a statement clarifying its position on Rangers following the acceptance of Charle’s Green’s newco into the Third Division.

    The release confirms:

    • The SFA has the power to transfer the one-year transfer embargo imposed on the now liquidated Rangers to the newco

    • The governing body has requested further information from Sevco, the company which now owns Rangers, to satisfy the SFA’s fit and proper person test

When will the Scottish FA consider Rangers application for membership?

Now that the Scottish Football League have made a conditional acceptance of Rangers FC in Irn Bru Division Three we will now consider the club’s application for membership transfer this week.

How can Rangers be considered for membership when they can’t provide four years’ financial statements?

Sevco Scotland Ltd bought Rangers Football Club PLC’s share in the SPL and membership of the Scottish FA as part of their acquisition of assets. Under Article 14.1, Sevco Scotland are requesting the transfer of the existing membership of Oldco. This is different to an application for a new membership, which generally requires four years of financial statements.

When will the Appellate Tribunal be reconvened?

The Scottish FA has been in dialogue with Rangers FC in respect of the outstanding disciplinary sanction. The decision of the Court of Session to set aside the 12-month registration embargo was complicated by Rangers FC’s administration and subsequent request from Sevco Scotland for a transfer of membership of the Scottish FA. Again, now that the club’s status has been confirmed by the SPL and SFL, we will consider the award of transfer once Rangers FC satisfy the necessary criteria.

Will Rangers’ original punishments be transferred to Newco?

The Scottish FA Board has the power to transfer membership under Article 14.1, which states:

“. . . Transfer of membership will be reviewed by the Board, which will have the complete discretion to reject or to grant such application on such terms and conditions as the Board may think fit.”

Will Ally McCoist be subject to a Compliance Officer Reference for his comments about the Judicial Panel?

The Compliance Officer communicated with Rangers FC in mid-June to confirm that the matter has been reported and will be initiated through the normal Judicial Panel Protocol upon conclusion of the other outstanding issues affecting the club.

In what round will Rangers Newco join the William Hill Scottish Cup?

Under the Scottish FA’s Cup Competition Rules, Rangers FC as a third division club will join the William Hill Scottish Cup at the second round.

Why have the Scottish FA blocked the transfer of Rangers players to other clubs?

The Scottish FA issued a guidance note, based on legal advice and without prejudice, to both Rangers FC and PFA Scotland. Certain players have now chosen not to transfer across under TUPE regulations and, instead, agreed contracts elsewhere.

On a procedural basis, the Scottish FA cannot process an International Transfer Certificate via FIFA’s Transfer Management System where there is an ongoing contractual dispute.

Rangers FC have confirmed that there is such a contractual dispute. In the meantime, the new club(s) can request a temporary transfer from FIFA in order that the player(s) is free to play while the dispute process unfolds. This process has commenced in relation to a number of the players in question.

At the request of one of the parties in dispute, the Scottish FA, through its Articles, can convene an Arbitration Panel, with either side selecting from a list of Panel members, with the two appointees subsequently selecting a Chair of the panel. Rangers FC have made such a request to the Scottish FA.

We would naturally seek an outcome as soon as possible.

Does the Scottish FA have a fit and proper person report for the new Rangers owner(s) and do we know who the main investors/directors are?

The Scottish FA has received private and confidential documentation from Sevco Scotland Ltd relating to the above. We have asked Sevco to provide further supplementary information and will consider that information this week.

Under new Scottish FA rules, it is a requirement of the outgoing club directors to conduct a full investigation under the Fit and Proper Guidelines. Given Rangers FC’s insolvency event, it has been incumbent on the administrators, Duff and Phelps, to carry out the necessary checks on the proposed new directors, as well as our own investigations.

What is the status of the investigation into use of Employee Benefit Trusts?

This is an investigation under the jurisdiction of the Scottish Premier League specific to player registrations. The SPL have recently confirmed they have prima facie evidence but as the potential appellate body, we cannot comment further at this stage.

bog – no thanks what we need, in my opinion, is a quality centreback who will act as one of a mainstay of 5 players over the next 4 or 5 years. so we need a quality CB aged about 28 years old whose only value is his ability. i think players will come and go but we need several players who are in the team year after year to allow our young players of potential to reach their potential before moving on if they so wish and if it suits celtic. if the core of the team is stable year on year we will have less fear going into European qualifiiers. we need a medium to long term view not a short term fix signing a 32/33 year old is the latter.

Why sign more centre halves unless you can get one far better than anything we have??

Last season we had a platoon there.

Everyone has said Marcus Fraser looks a good one for the future, Rogne, imho, is our best centre back by some distance… if he actually stays fit which I will admit is a concern…

Then we have Charliebhoy who will only get better. Both are young in their position.

Kelvin Wilson will not be the answer but is still good enough back-up for a couple of games which is hopefully most he is needed in

In hindsight: I’d have kept O’Dea for the sheer point that we’ve already let 2 CB’s go, he isnt worse than anyone we’ve played there before and he will play for the club.

I dont even want to think of the prospect of Josh Thompson…but thats okay because BigVic can step in before that becomes even a possibility.

So 2 (or 3) CB Slots: Mulgrew, Rogne, Wilson, Vic, young Marcus.

That is more than enough, only reason to put more on the wage budget is genuine quality.

Why was a hearse sent to Celtic Park? Which begs another question-

Had Celtic suffered liquidation would any new entity have been allowed to say they were the only European Cup winners in Scotland?

I think we all know the answers.

Sevco have bought a stadium, players and strips, have never played a game of football, the idea they can just ‘buy’ an old clubs history is completely childish given that at the same time they don’t recognise the old clubs debts.
