Celtic have to get the job done against Bodo/Glimt

270

We have seen a lot of Norwegian opposition in the last six years.  Who can forget the defeats home and away at the hands of Molde in 2015?  The away game provided an iconic image for the limits to Ronny Deila’s Celtic.

After a goalless home leg against Rosenborg in 2017, we won the away leg 0-1 thanks to a James Forrest goal.  A year later the same opponents took the lead in the first leg at Celtic Park before Odsonne Edouard (2) and Olivier Ntcham gave Celtic the advantage, the return ended 0-0.

Three months after that Champions League qualifier, we met Rosenborg again in the Europa group stage, winning 1-0 in both Glasgow and Trondheim.  Rosenborg fans probably have a nervous twitch at the mention of Celtic, but although we bettered them across the three ties, each game was tight.

Bodo/Glimt are Norwegian champions for the second season running.  They put their forward slash on the map in two remarkable Europa Conference games against Jose Mourinho’s Roma, winning 6-1 in Bodo and earning a 2-2 draw in Rome – Roma equalised with 6 minutes remaining.

Right now, Bodo/Glimt would fancy their chances against Celtic.  This could change by the time the teams meet on 17 February.  That game is four weeks before the Norwegian league season is due to start.  Notwithstanding our injury peculiarities, Celtic players will be at peak fitness, Bodo/Glimt’s will be two months without a competitive game.

Glimt also have the curse of the successful small club to deal with.  Their squad is vulnerable to more resourceful clubs, and there are hundreds of more resourceful clubs in Europe than Glimt.  The team they deploy in 2022 could be quite different than this season’s draft.

Ignoring their preseason status and other difficulties, this is a tie Celtic should have more than enough in the tank to win.  Football is hard against vastly more resourceful teams, so when it comes to Ross County, Hibs and Bodo/Glimt – who attracted 5,652 fans to the Roma game, we have to get the job done.  Mourinho is rubbish too, so big deal.

Okay,I can see a bit of what Ernie Lynch was getting at,but not much.Feruz was 5/6 years ago,if not for his Celtic connections, who would have known him.

If they had written,Feruz, useless waste of time, washed up at his peak, when given golden opportunity by Celtic, has made a bollox of it once again.

    On Adam,Fat useless,stupid Hun,ex Liverpool,Rangers,and Scotland,player,makes a bollox of it once again,I would be OK with that.

Again,I am sure there are better examples of their biased reporting.

On Friday the Daily Record online reported the arrest of two male passengers after a flight from Belfast to Lyon on Thursday morning. They were charged with being drunk and disorderly on the flight as well as threatening and abusive behaviour. At no point in the report were Rangers or Rangers supporters mentioned.

That’s more like it.Not even the old,”Football fans”.That would have been too obvious,so left out.

  7. Record, now in a sweat fretting that the newly appointed Nigeria manager, will now tell Aribo,Bassey,Balogun,to get their asses over and join the squad before we face them on Jan 2.Hoping the old manager was sacked because of his lax grip on the rules.Seemed to be willing to appease the clubs wanting extensions to their players joining up.

  8. Play MikeyJ on the right wing and I’ll bet he’s a far better looking player than when playing on the left….. It’s particularly glaring when you watch him gather the ball on the touchline.

Saw you (or some other observant fellow) posting a couple of days ago re: MJ on the right wing. I’d not thought about that before – always had him nailed on for the left because that’s where he’s always played.

However, he did have a wee spell on the right in a game recently – 2nd half against Betis? Stuck in my mind because he was on that side – set up Henderson’s goal with a cracking ball across the 6 yard box too (after skinning their left-back).

Good spot – will keep an eye on that.

  10. Bodo/Glimt finished their domestic season with 63 pts and a GD of 34, winning the league by 3pts from Molde. They lost only 3 games in the season and only 1 home game (to Molde). Molde apart their GD was 18 better than anyone else in the league.

In Europe they exited the CL qualifiers in the first round to Legia Warsaw, losing both legs. Their game picked up for the EL qualifiers where they won all three rounds relatively convincingly. In their EL group with Roma, Zorya Luhansk and CSKA Sofia they were unbeaten recording 3 convincing home wins and 3 away draws. It’s been mentioned they play on a plastic pitch, they’ve taken full advantage of that in Europe having not lost a home game since Legia , while managing to be difficult to beat away. These results aren’t a single season anomaly either, last season they navigated some early home games to be knocked out of EL qualifying in a one-off tie against AC Milan in a plucky 3-2 loss at the San Siro. Immediately following that game, if you recall, Milan bought their star young player Jens Petter Hauge for 4m. This is a team who know how to play away from home against opponents with more possession and chances, and their passing accuracy is regularly in the 80%+ region.

In terms of key players, their star left back Fredrik Ange Bjorkan is out of contract next month and heavily linked with a move to Hertha Berlin. Their key midfielder, Patrick Berg (who’s been mentioned here a few times) has a year left on his contract and is also briefing the media on his imminent departure. I don’t expect either to be with the club in February.

The other ones to watch include their 29 year old captain, Ulrik Saltnes, who has 10 assists and 13 goals this season, 5 of those goals coming in Europe. And their young striker, Erik Botheim, with 9 assists and 20 goals, including 5 goals in Europe. Also keep an eye on their forward Ola Solbakken who plays off the right and has chipped in with a good few goals and assists.

This is a tricky tie with all the indicators suggesting Celtic have to put this away in the opening home leg. A lot will depend on how Bodo Glimt manage the transfer window, though their manager Kjetil Knutsen (another who’s been mentioned on these pages) has pretty good form in this regard.

Europe is a distraction to the most important issue this season.

Ross County match much more significant.

  12. RC @ 2:41 PM,

It would be great to get Shaun back in Scottish football – he seems to really know his stuff.

Hibs are part of the conglomerate who commissioned the Deloitte report into Scottish football.

With Aberdeen’s Dave Cormack driving that I have high hopes.

Hope it destroys the Bain/Lawwell model that has been so damaging to Scottish football.

Of course Neil Doncaster and the SFA old firmists will have to be ousted before progress is made.

But Scottish football need a strong Aberdeen, Dundee, Dundee United, Hearts and Hibs.

    Hail Hail

  13. Scottish football needs proper [unbiased in act and evidence] referees, that also requires SFA reform and a professional accountable structure put in place, the majority of clubs need to demand this, now.

PHIL, you got a retrospective card for verbals to a certain poster giving Mikey Johnston laldy while commenting on a live game.

    It was reversed on appeal.😊

  16. ONIL,

Sorry I disagree. European football, especially after January is sooooo important to us. European football is a prize that many clubs would give their eye teeth for.

Ross County is important, but it will not generate the interest from supporters that playing the team from Norway will.

I also think that we need to beat the huns in January to show others the way forward.

    HH.

  17. Just been told I have a ticket for the South Stand on Sunday after missing out on the ballot.

    Who’s a happy Bhoy? Me.

  18. The draw for the EConfL was made yesterday and Paul67 gets slated for writing about it.

The competition may not be as important as the SPrem but surely we are allowed to discuss a draw that has just taken place. After Wednesday we will all be focused on the LC Final, or should we not be discussing that either?

‘Ross County is important, but it will not generate the interest from supporters that playing the team from Norway will.’

    ##

The interest from supporters is more about the novelty factor than anything else.

In footballing terms all that counts this season is the league.

    Nothing else matters.

  20. Greenpinta,

Have to disagree, although European football after Christmas is important to a club like Celtic, winning the league this season is the Holy Grail.

    The only show in town.

Ross County tomorrow night is huge, as is St.Mirren away next Wednesday.

  21. I do love an old black and white choice bandied about.

    The league matters.

    And, for me:

Getting as far in the Europa Conference matters.

Oh and for the record, the cups matter too.

I want it all, because it all matters.

  22. ERNIE LYNCH @ 3:34 PM,

In footballing terms the Scottish league is small beer.

It’s either going to be won by us or Rangers, Rangers arguably shouldn’t even be in the competition – yet we know they get by with a little help from their friends.

European football is a much fairer measure as to where Football Clubs are in the scheme of things.

It much more important than domestic competition. A Club the size of Celtic need to be competing with their peers and not the tartan equivalent of WWE.

    Hail Hail
