Celtic head into tasty looking Europa knockout stage

196

Some tasty teams dropped into the Europa League knockout stage last night.  The Salzburg (2018 semi-finalist) keeper had a nightmare against Liverpool, ensuring a defeat occurred where a win was required to prevent the Austrians slipping from the Champions League.

Inter, who are second to Juventus is Serie A, also finished third in their CL group after losing at home to Barcelona. Still, only three points separate them from Lazio, who have won their last seven domestic league games and are clearly the form team in Italy, despite losing home and away to Celtic.

Benfica (2014 finalist) thrashed Zent 3-0 but finished their CL group third, a point behind Lyon, while last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, Ajax (2017 finalist), blew it at home to Valencia, losing 0-1 on the night and managing to be eliminated on 10 points.

All four will fancy their chances of reaching the semi-final.  Whoever we face in the first knockout round has reached that stage on merit, but they are unlikely to be stronger than Lazio.  There is a lot of work to do between now and 20 February, when the competition resumes, we’ll see what shape we are in then.

Tom Rogic signed shirt raffle for Celtic FC Foundation

The Celtic squad wore a special shirt for last month’s league game against Motherwell, bearing the Celtic FC Foundation Christmas Appeal logo instead of the normal Dafabet logo on the front, and the words “Christmas Appeal” on the back, instead of the Magners logo.

Tom Rogic’s signed shirt from that day is available for raffle.  Each donation of £10 or more will be entered into a draw, which will take place on Friday 13 December.  The shirt will be posted on Monday 16th (or available for collection at the Hibs game on Sunday 15th).

The Celtic FC Foundation do incredible work throughout the world all year round, but their work with those most in need in the winter months, and for children and families coping with chronic poverty, can give warmth, nourishment, self-respect and  human compassion that some people struggle to find.  All donations go straight to the Foundation.

This is why Celtic exists.  You can enter here at JustGiving.  Good luck and thank you!!

  1. This is one of the few non-subscription sites I know of where you have to log in just to be able to read the blog. Needs fixing.

    R.I.P. ian Young

  2. See ol’ john james has completely jumped the shark with his hatred of NL.

Another site that actually wanted Celtic beat on Sunday to prove their point.

Griffiths n Lennon haven’t had a fall out, his support for Leigh is constant and over n above…

Scott Sinclair, who we all love hasn’t been training with the kids and he hasn’t been told to report at 6am for training.

Like all the players he has been treated brilliantly.

Too many Celtic fans think it’s like a computer game and just embarrass themselves and the site they post on.

I understand these guys are still hoping they’re right about Lenny and the board etc but do you ever notice they live abroad and never put a coin into the club?

This site has lost 3 or 4 top notch posters who sit in a gang-hut with no heating hearing how Joan’s new hairdo is looking.

We have enemies everywhere and these guys are becoming worse than huns.

Absolute clowns… Get them tae fek.

Bateen Bhoy…I doubt Paul cares enough to fix it…seems the blog is being allowed to fizzle out…

  4. WeeBobby, Despite everything the Blog seems resilient but I feel we have lost our manners a bit.

Before every new Poster was welcomed albeit also asked if he was a Hun, but at least not ignored.

Now for the most part they are ignored , with that attitude we will not gain new recruits and at the moment we need them.

  5. CORKCELT et al,

I have been worrying about CQN for some time. I have the odd problem but by and large I have little difficulty getting on to the blog.

Paul67 seems to be standing back a great deal more than in the early days. If anyone broke the few rules there are, they were quickly reminded, e.g. that children read the site. Not anymore. Then he asked for volunteers to moderate, as he himself couldn’t devote the time. That caused a lot of angst and saw the departure of a fair number of CQNers to pastures, I assume, they felt greener.

On top of that we seldom get the wisdom and wit of the likes of DBBIA and Auldheid (and quite a few more) any longer.

Let’s hope things change for the better. Personally, I can’t see it.

Sad, as it is the only place I really feel at home.

  6. weebobbycollins on

Corkcelt…some of us are just too comfortable here. It’s still the only place I post…I keep hoping it will make a comeback of sorts…wishful thinking?

    Hope you’re well…

  7. Let’s not forget that some of the bar-room, lunchtime legends got themselves defenestrated for their abusive ( unapologetic) personal attacks.

Everyone is aware of the few bhlog rules.

During the ‘ big freeze’ of 1963 Celtic came to Ireland for some practice and played Glentoran in Belfast and Morton in Dublin.I attended the game at the Oval,Celtic winning 5-4 big yogi scoring four,Johnny Divers hitting the other.Ian played with a makeshift defence of Price,McNamee,Gemmell,Kennedy and in goals Frank Haffey.

This was my first game involving Ian,but many followed.Much admired and liked. Thanks for the memories Ian.

  9. Nally- totally disagree, Scott Sinclair has been treated shamefully, given a new contract, with only reason to sell him and recoup some money, no problem with that.He didn’t have a suitable offer, been an outcast since.

  10. Well sobriety looms and I’ve been trying to jot down a few things on something or other. Just read it back. Think I’ll give up until blood alcohol levels drop below critical.

Anyway, here it is. Demonstrating that the concept of ‘Train of thought’ is actually nonsense and in my case comes more like a Casey Jones steamin and a rollin hitting an oncoming engine and then writing down what his last thoughts were before he vaporised.

It was going to be about unstoppable forces and immovable objects but then something happened, and while there might be a passing reference to the concept, it’s …..it’s……what’s the word?……WEIRD.

So if you want to be convinced that you are totally sane and can be comforted by the fact that that the road to my wee twisted Celtic world has room only for me, then here’s a wee diversion (and it’s only part 1).

I haven’t posted it directly on here because it goes on a bit and there’s a few sweary words in it.

I may have to start a go-fund-me page to pay for my treatment. 🤪🤪

  11. Matt Stewart…Iain Banks wants to know if you’re walking on glass lol…but he’s wrong…the unstoppable force doesn’t stop…neither does the immovable force move…they don’t collide because they live in different universes…unless it’s a matchbox universe lol…hope this helps ;-))

  12. I’m good Bobby.

ParkheadcumSalford Like you I’m also most comfortable on this Blog as well.

Leaders etc don’t really bother me, in truth I don’t read them half the time. I just enjoy the opportunity to interact with fellow Celtic Supporters without any hidden agenda,

Having said that I have no problem making the odd post on other blogs if I feel I have something to contribute.

I genuinely hate to see Celts fall out with each other, we have enough enemies trying to bring us down without giving them a helping hand.

It is a great historical time to be a Celt, I never thought I’d live to see such times, currently we have 8 Leagues in a row, 3 Scottish Cups in a row, 4 League Cups in a row, & we are not finished yet.

It’s mind boggling & still some fans aint happy.

Join you in the concern of reduced participates on the blog. Our host has upgraded the site and made it more resilient, in the old days it could crash easily. In the old days you couldn’t post wee pictures😱😂.

However the price is now on the participates to control their devices to block popups etc and some will find it too cumbersome to continue posting. Our host can do some server based changes, I think the relogin problems one of them but they are mostly personal device handling.

  16. Hullo again all you young rebels.

From the Young era, although he didn’t play in this particular game.

The team from my first attendance at Paradise age 4!

Haffey; MacKay, O’Neill; Crerand, McNeill, Clark; Brogan, Chalmers, Hughes, Divers, Byrne.

March 24th 1962, I travelled on the Greenock CSC Bus and we beat Aberdeen 2-0 – Brogan scored both goals.

  20. Possible opponents in Monday’s draw now include the 4 teams 3rd place from CL with poorest records, so …

Club Brugge (BEL), Leverkusen (GER), Olympiacos (GRE), Shakhtar Donetsk (UKR) join APOEL (CYP) .

The other 11 will be confirmed after tomorrow night’s games.

  21. Macjay, as ever subtlety is not your strength, amongst others, why offer Sinclair a new contract, and not play him,if you offer him that, he’s a part of your plans,?

  22. Nae bother…. I think we should have more posters talking about catholics and protestants and chapels…. Absolute erseholes… Why these guys have given oxygen to these clowns I’ll never know.

    An absolute embarrassment to us……

    I like CQN

Have these clowns who continually slag paul67 ever thought maybe he honestly believes ( like tens of thousands of others) in what he writes and PL and the board are keeping us on top?

I live in Scotland and can tell you that I don’t do the banter but going into my two surname boss on a Monday morning ( he knows I’m an ultra) and saying ( after we’ve pumped them)

Hey boss…. The M8 is chocka because of an accident… Some of the guys might be late… Is the best feeling in the world.
