CELTIC hero Ange Postecoglou is “on a downward spiral,” according to former Ibrox boss Graeme Souness.
The one-time Govan gaffer has emerged as an arch-critic of the ex-Hoops manager who led the Parkhead team to five honours in two years after taking over in the summer of 2021.
The 59-year-old Greek-Australian became a fans’ favourite as he revamped the squad after inheriting the shambles of the previous campaign that saw Neil Lennon sacked and the club completing their first trophyless season in 11 years.
THE LAST HURRAH…Ange Postecoglou holds aloft the Scottish Cup after Celtic seal the treble in June 2023. It was his fifth – and final – trophy at the Hoops.
After guiding the Hoops to a world record eighth treble, Postecoglou was lured to Spurs, but his time in London has been far from plain sailing and he was involved in a furious aftermath following the side’s 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night, as CQN reported.
The pressure is mounting on the team chief and Souness has already stated his job is hanging by a thread and only a Europa League trophy triumph will save his job.
The former Scotland international skipper has fired another broadside at the under-siege coach and, speaking in the Daily Mail, said: “There is no way of dressing up that it’s been a very disappointing season for Ange Postecoglou.
“He’s on a downward spiral that is hard to get out of.
LOOKING DOWN…Ange Postecoglou is under pressure at Spurs.
“When you start falling out with the diehard supporters who travel away to watch you, it’s always a dangerous game.”
Postecoglou will be in charge when Spurs host Eintracht Frankfurt in the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final on Thursday night with the return due in Germany a week later.
The London club, sitting 14th in the Premier League, take on doomed Southampton in London tomorrow afternoon.
