Celtic history against Italians

784

Lazio were Celtic’s first Italian opponents when the clubs drew 0-0 in Rome in 1950 before a Celtic Park rematch a few months later when Celtic won 4-0.  The next four occasions Celtic met Italian teams would all be played on neutral ground, starting with a draw against Bologna on a 1966 preseason tour of the United States, before a notable win against Inter in Lisbon at the end of that season.

Celtic then met Milan four times in 10 months starting in May 1968.  It was back to the US for a 1-1 draw, before a rematch a month later in Toronto when goals from Bobby Lennox and Charlie Gallacher won the game.  The teams then drew 0-0 in the San Siro before Milan won the return 0-1 at Celtic Park, the first time in eight games against Italian opposition Celtic emerged with a defeat.

Italian champions Fiorentina lost at Celtic Park in 1969 before winning the return game while a year later Celtic drew twice against Bari on a North American tour.  Inter and Celtic then met in the 1972 European Cup semi-final, both games finishing goalless, before a nine year wait until the next game against Italian opponents and the first against Juventus.  Celtic won at home and lost in Turin.

Three games in four days in July 1993 saw a win over US Carisolo and defeats against Atalanta and Napoli.  Four years later Parma and Roma visited Celtic Park, with the home team achieving a draw and win.  2001 saw Celtic’s first Champions League group games and two memorable games against Juventus, losing controversially in Turin before recording a 4-3 win in Glasgow.

Parma lost at Celtic Park in 2002 with Roma beating Celtic in Toronto in 2004.  Celtic then embarked on a familiarity drive with Milan, drawing twice at home and losing the corresponding away fixtures in 2004 and 2007.  A home win over Parma in summer 2007 briefly interrupted Celtic’s run of Italian fixtures against Milan but the teams met another twice in 2007, Celtic winning at home and losing away.

Celtic lost to Inter in Dublin in 2011 before drawing home and away to Udinese in the same year.  Kris Commons scored Celtic’s goal in their most recent match against Italian opponents in a Celtic Park draw last July.

36 games in 63 years, 11 wins, 11 defeats and 14 draws.  The team in green and white won the most important one!

Early notice, the CQN Charity Golf Day will take place on Friday, 14 June.  More details to follow.

the Ballot for Champions League final tickets opens tomorrow, got to be worth a go, our return match with Barcelona will be worth watching :-)

  7. Talk of who will be full backs on Tuesday and who will partner Big Kelvin, will Lenny surprise us all and play 3 at the back and match Juve’s 3-5-2 formation?

With no Efe he could play Lustig & Mulgrew either side of Wilson, Matthews & Izzy (if fit) as wing backs with a central 3 of Brown, Wanyama & Ledley. That would allow Sammi to play off Hooper and go wandering into the spaces behind their wing backs. Maybe Commons was given a run at left wing back yesterday in case Izzy isn’t fit.

  8. That AC Milan match in 69 was one I’ll never forget. Tragi-comic blunder by Big Billy and at least six penalty claims by Celtic. My mum allowed me and my sister to stay up and watch the highlights . We didn’t know the score and although our hearts sank ar Prati’s early goal we weren’t despondent. My dad arriving home and not even coming into the living room and just going to bed was enough to reduce my sister and me to tears. Dont think my dad moved til the Friday

Three at the back …Jesus wept ..I’d need a load a drink to get thro a Juve game if we play that formation :-))

He’s played it a few time this season and last. I’d prefer 4-5-1 with Forrest & Sammi wide trying to get in behind their wing backs and stretching their 3 defenders

Yes, he said he was in talks with us and they were at an advanced stage but it would be god who decided on whether he signed or not.

Henrik never got back to him!!

  12. Has Platini ever played at CP? Seen most of the Greats but dont think we played against him at any time.

Nahhh the ugliest hookers this season have been in Lisbon and I am not expecting the hookers in Turin too be much better

  14. Armageddon visits European Football

Celtic 15pts ahead in the SPL, Bayern 15pts ahead in the Bundesliga, Man Utd 12pts ahead in the EPL and Barcelona 12pts ahead in La Liga, surely this has been caused by FC Zombie plying their trade in the 3rd Division of the SFL. The SFA must urgently revoke the transfer ban and allow FC Zombie to buy enough players to enable them to field a team in each of the major European leagues to prevent this lack of competition. UEFA must change their cross border rules now and allow this to happen immediately. Only FC Zombie can prevent European football’s Armageddon. SOS Mr Green, we need your help now!

Meanwhile, back on planet reality, big Efe looking as cool as Billy Ocean before a gig, COYBIG tonight and more so on Tuesday night.

We have triumphed and we have suffered against the Italians, but even when we have lost, 1969 and 1972, we could have won. These are the days when every supporter wishes he was a player, these are those days. And for those who were not around early doors, and wondering how it felt then just before playing a great Italian team, it feels exactly like it does now. Full of hope!

  16. Gene's a Bhoys name on

Just watched recording of this morning’s sunday supplement – Oliver Kay of the times and Rob Draper of the mos had really good words about lennie – great set up and academy – good eye for a player-achievements not recognised south (and maybe north) of the border. Obje t must be to get to last 16 more often.

  17. The African Nations Cup final is one of the poorest I can remember. But I’m still absolutely delighted for oor Efe who is only 5 minutes away from the first of 4 medals this season.
