Celtic in Group of Champions

918

Celtic join Barcelona, Milan and Ajax in the Champions League’s only group of former champions.

We beat Barcelona and Milan the last time we played each of them, and eliminated Ajax from the same competition last time we met 12 years ago. This is an incredibly difficult group, but it is the job we wanted this time yesterday.

Now we must get ready for the task ahead.  Prepare properly and fear no one.

There will be a ticket scramble, among those who didn’t renew their season tickets………..

  1. There ya go Alfie – time to sign up by Monday! Forget all about Cardiff (going down, going down, going down). Get where the action is!

As we know which teams were in which Pot, do we not know the order of the games? We were Pot 4 last year as well.

Trying to work out when the game will be in the Dam!

That erse Adrian Durham is rattling on about the Celtic fans winding up Ballotelli.

Why would we? He has issues. But why would we single him out?

I hate this lazy train of thought.

He’s got more of a history with fireworks and bangers than us :)

I don’t know if it’s intended or not but your last two posts’ last paragraphs could come across as having a wee snipe at sections of our support.

    Maybe I’m over-reading them. But…

If so, then it’s a shame.

  7. The draw is a bit of come down after the euphoria. Milan again! Beat Ajax and Milan at Home, draw with Barca and we could secure 3rd place. Draw with Ajax away not out of the question and after previous in Milan I think we deserve to take something away as well. Last 16 not impossible but from a coefficient points view I would take the Europa after the group stages a wee run and a few more gates should make up a bit of the deficit versus last 16 Champions league money. We need to build out of pot 4

  8. Is there anything sadder in this world than being a heated ball in a Ramsden Cup draw?

Is there anything better in this world than being drawn in the “champions group” in the UEFA Champions League, having at least six fabulous games to look forward to, playing against some of the best players on the planet, knowing that you are there on merit, knowing that this is where you belong?

  9. roberttressell,

Agree, I think Jamie Redknapp has caught the Celtic bug.

Every time I see him he talks only positively about us. Such a great contrast on CL nights when he’s sharing a studio with Sounness, Wilkins, and company.

  10. Hell

When draw came through I gulped. So did Lenny. We could get zero points. We could get 10. Wish it had been Real and not Barca but hey ho. I am more than moderately excited!

    Just climb it

You pick the place and I’ll choose the time

    And I’ll climb

The hill in my own way

Just wait a while for the right day

And as I rise above the tree lines and the clouds

    I look down

Hear the sound of the things you said today

Fearlessly, the idiot faced the crowd

    Merciless, the magistrate turns ’round

    Frowning

And who’s the fool who wears the crown?

And go down in your own way

And every day is the right day

  13. Charlie Nic all “we” this and “we” that talking about Arsenal.

    Fair enough.

However, I have NEVER heard him refer to Celtic as “we”. Only ever “they”. And very rarely positively.

    188 games for Celtic

    184 for arsenal.

    Hmmmm.

  14. Pleased with the draw.

Up close and personal with the best is how you learn and improve.

Of course we have met all these teams before but this is the future and long may it continue.

  15. Assume game dates might be similar to last year:

Middle games back to back = Barca away then home.

Milan games before and after Barca and Ajax first and last.

I’m going to go out on a limb here and say that we will qualify for last 16. I think we can take 7 points at Celtic Park and get something away from home in one of the games, probably Ajax. It will be a tough group and I don’t think there will be any whipping boys. All games are likely to be tough, cut throat stuff. Our crowd and our good record at home will cause apprehension for these teams. No one will take us for granted and our players have played a lot of European games in the last two seasons. They know how tough it will be but experience brings confidence and I believe it is not beyond us to upset the applecart. I bet SKY are delighted that Celtic are in the Group Stages. Huge TV audiences for them.

  20. As the convenor on the bus has said elsewhere,we will be walking into bars in Barcelona and the barman will be giving it “the usual mickbhoy”

  21. I was just in a beach side bar in Costa Brava watching the draw. All Catalans inside watching the telly, me keeping quiet. I can exclusively reveal that there was loud groans and slapping of heads when we were drawn with them.

Didn’t understand what was said but they seemed pretty exasperated.

    Bored??? Nervous??? Dunno.

  22. Well, this is what we wanted,eh? Very difficult group but did we expect an easy ride??

We will go into this as virtual no-hopers, nothing to lose etc etc etc. But we are capable of doing something here, after all Barca have peaked, AC no longer have Maldini so what the hell, let’s get stuck in and who knows. Maybe we can do it, I for one think we can.

Onward and upward, CELTIC forever the best

  24. Another night in Paradise

When I saw Shakhter Karagandy line up in the flesh last night, sometimes accused of being a half glass empty supporter, – I really did fear the worst.

I’ve never seen a team like them, in stature, an utterly huge team with Dundee Utd strips on, and a unique game plan. I wondered where the goals would come from especially after their “dodgy” keeper started immediately to perform heroics.

The mythical notions and hackneyed cliches “pub team” “football backwater” were very quickly dispelled, let know one fool you, Celtic beat a team last night. But from the moment the ball left Kris Common’s boot, Karagandy were clinging to their game plan with their finger tips, and mostly at throw ins.

Without a doubt the most bereft but dangerous at the same time team, I’ve ever seen inside

CP, but the latest parked bus was inevitably also going to be destroyed.

At Celtic Park seated in a new posh seat podium © Jobo Balde in the main stand, and complete with a half time Boost from bjmac then the Kris Commons screamer made the nothing short of incomparable. Even the stewards were dancing in the isles, a cop near laughed, when Sammi scored, and the GB couldn’t sing for watching the game.

Samaras was a giant, in the land of the giants, and underlined his Celtic legendary status, with a ball kill, and hit, that would have graced any game, in any CL. He taunted Shakhter mercilessly, and his infectious enthusiasm for Celtic rubbed off and galvanised the rest.

James Forrest nearly gave up, especially after a cynical foul, and when his head went down NFL astutely ignored him, long enough to let wee Jamsie complete the finish, we’ve waited for.

When Anthony Stokes decided he could dribble with the best, and lay off perfectly, Shakhter were rightfully robbed of the penalties they’d been preparing to take, from the minute the game finished in Kazakhstan.
