Celtic interims: great start to the weekend

The impact of Champions League group participation on Celtic’s interim accounts for the six month to 31 December 2022 was significant.  Revenue increased by 44.8% to £76m.  That’s more than the entire year’s revenue for the seasons to June 2020 and June 2021.

This was achieved despite the World Cup break, which reduced the number of home games to 14 (2021: 19).  Celtic account for season ticket revenue as games are played, so more revenue will be recognised in the second part of the financial year.  Despite the remarkable increase in income, operating expenses moved little, to £48.3m (2021: £45.8m)

This means that the club are certain to break the revenue record set in season 2017-18, which reached £101m.  One big change from the previous interims is profit from player trading, down to £1.8m from a Edouard-spacular £25.8m a year earlier.  As long as Celtic trade very profitably or reach the Champions League group stage, they will be comfortably in the black.  Achieving both would be transformational for our football budget metrics.

Merchandising – yet again – edged up to £17.4m (2021: £15.3m).  Multimedia and other commercial income rose to £30.8m from £13.9m, reflecting not only Champions League football but the commercially successful Sydney tournament.  More of this kind of thing, please.

You and I have been here before.  Looking back on successful interims only feels right if we are confident of winning the league.  We are currently in that position, with the added benefit of playing for automatic Champions League qualification next term.

Well done to each of the departments behind these figures, and to the Celtic supporters who stand by their club with enormous conviction.

    I have now realised that my dislike for Robbie Neilson is growing every time I hear him speak.

    5 million up on January transfer dealings too. Win the league this season, do an Asian tour in june/ july and offload the soro, ajeta and barkas etc of this team and celtic will be in a hell of a good place to get some added quality into the squad. Might even so the barrowfield training centre and hotel, museum etc getting built afterall.

    Celtic push ahead with ‘major re-development’ at Barrowfield

    Celtic chairman Peter Lawwell reiterated in today’s interim financial results statement that the club continue to explore the erection of new training facilities at Barrowfield to support the club’s Women and academy teams.

     

     

    First announced in 2019 as ‘major re-development plans’ [Celtic FC], not much has been shared publicly by the club on the progress of the work.

     

     

    However, we know that planning permission for an indoor training centre and separate modular changing facilities was granted, with conditions, by Glasgow City Council back in September and November 2021.

     

     

    The club continue to push ahead with the proposals too, with documents and drawings relating to the project published by the council’s planning body as recently as January 2023.

     

     

    Much work has already taken place including investigations of the site relating to drainage, refuse storage and landscaping maintenance – amongst other issues.

     

     

    The Barrowfield training facilities will primarily be used by the Celtic FC Women team and the Celtic Academy teams. However, the indoor pitch is also set to be used by the first-team squad during poor winter weather, per the club’s initial announcement.

     

     

    In 2019, Celtic announced the new site would feature 2 full-sized outdoor grass pitches, 2 first-class artificial pitches, both outdoor and indoor, as well as an outdoor warm-up area.

     

     

    Crucially, the facilities are not a replacement for what is already at Lennoxtown but are designed to complement them.

     

     

    Once the planning phase is complete, we should hear more confirmation from the club that construction will commence – that will be news warmly welcomed by supporters.
