Celtic interims show what a stable club looks like

869

Celtic interim accounts for the 6 months to 31 December were released this afternoon.  The standout figure is that, despite Champions League revenue being absent this year, football and stadium income was down from £16.8m to a similar £16.5m.  This suggests other ticket sales increased.

The hit from the lack of Champions League came in the multimedia and commercial column, which was down from £19.5m to £7.9m, but the club still make an operating profit of £3.2m.  So, we’ve a fairly solid club on our hands.

We invested £5.7m in players, while making a profit of £7.1m on disposals.  With player trading, tax and interest all accounted for, we made a profit for the period of £6.601m.  This Armageddon thing is working out quite well.

I know that … and I am recognize that he was our key guy last year ….but what is the old saying about the land of the blind?

He was, unquestionably, the focal point of our attack last season … everything went through him….( this was good for him, partly good for the team, and partly bad for the team) , so it is only natural that, given that most of our attack went through him, and he played a lot, he would be up there for goals and assists….

but his trapping, passing, movement were, at times, woeful (he was not the only one, of course) …. had these been better, how many more goals and assists would he (and others) have had?

do we keep statistics about how many times he lost possession last season? or failed to track back? or ….

as I said, I am not denying that he has his strengths (in a team that was scared to shoot, he filled the gap), but he played a style that was suited to us last year (and us to him)… but, unless he can adapt to a more fluid, faster paced style of play, I think his chances will be limited going forward ….

which is why I am happy to see him signed up (he scores goals, and goals win games), but I am concerned about the weekly wages he is on now (I dont know), as I think RD’s team takes shape, KC’s contribution is going to dwindle …

and I dont want to see another Lambert situation …. where he gets a new contract at a good wage, doesn’t play, so buggers off to get his coaching badges, and then scampers when the contract is over ….

and, given his style of play, I’m not certain that he is the sort of player whose skills would translate well into coaching … although I admit that can be a hard one to predict.

Hope you’re right, especially now that the words ‘club’ and ‘liquidated’ are being belatedly used by the SMSM.

I’m in the Shankly Stand, turnstiles 37,38. Will be on the thread before the game.

Ps. I will accept an apology.

  5. Kojo,

I really can’t see your problem with Kris, or broonie for that matter.

You are usually not far off the mark in your diagnosis of our team after a game, except for the two I’ve mentioned.

In Broonie we have not only a good talented workhorse in midfield, but a leader and In Kris we have a goal scorer that proved yet again how to put the ball in the net on Sunday.

Speaking to most Celtic supporters, they are in total agreement on this.

As said, I don’t understand your problem with them!

Every professional football club is a business. Otherwise we wouldn’t exist.

    Hardly a surprising revelation.

Indeed. Although some may argue that those run by Oligarchs and Shieks ain’t a business.

I was simply making the point that the business side is now the most important side.

I would argue that the team should be the most important side.

Without the team there would be no potential for profit

Just finished listening to an interesting podcast on Celtic Underground.Michael Kelly was interviewed.

No doubt a real Celtic man, Michael came across as very bitter about his removal along with the Old board.

Critical about everyone , especially Fergus but surprisingly about some of his family and previous old board allies.

Didn’t agree with him much but one thing resonated……we are very much a business now and the team plays very much second fiddle to that.

Does anyone think that ain’t so?

    –1–

Kelly never ceases to amaze me. Twisting the facts to suit his pockled mind,

The team played second fiddle back then to business also. Only it was a totally shit business, badly and amatuerly run by him and his gene pool.

The team played second fiddle on the park too, and in the transfer market. And in the media etc etc.

He is no Celtc man. He lined his pockets on the way out for his own benefit and the detriment of the club going forward.

    Business first Michael? Hypocrit.

    Thank God you have gone.

Lot of assumptions and projections going on. Nowadays, I believe football is a planet with a short term plan driven by a longer term dream. PL has kept the fans and dressing room happy, the treble is the plan. The dream is for later..

  15. mike in toronto

You won’t be surprised to know that I disagree with much of that :-)

I’ve never bought into this theory that Commons has a poor first touch and is a poor passer of the ball. For me he’s our most creative player and I think that brings not only added pressure but also increased expectation from the support. Because of his goals and assists we expect something special almost every time he gets the ball. Aidan McGeady suffered from the same problem.

Being Celtic we’re frequently playing against packed defences where space is limited. Commons has no pace but what he does have is mobility combined with football intelligence. This allows him to find pockets of space, like he did on Sunday, and that’s where he’s most effective. It’s inevitable that playing in such limited space will result in him giving up possession on occasions.

In an ideal world yes but that’s not the world we inhabit. I think we’re dealing well as a club/company with the financial and other difficulties/challengies that exist and seem to be coming out fairly well. Not what we all want of course.
