Celtic interims stunning-ageddon

858

Champions League football this season has enabled Celtic to achieve a remarkable set of interim financial results for the period 1 June 2012 to 31 December 2012.  Turnover was up 71%, a stunning-ageddon figure.

Ticket sales and other stadium revenue was up marginally, to £18.598m (2011: £16.446m), as was merchandising, to £9.847m (2001: £7.821m), both reflecting the ancillary value of Champions League participation, but the big increase was in TV and media income, £21.613m, up from a paltry £5.004m in the same period of 2011.

The only amber flag on the results was the increase in operating costs, from £28.388m to £36.961m, a 30% increase, which will reflect higher bonus payments for Champions League participation, higher wage costs and a more general increase in running costs.

Pre-tax profit came in at £14.944m, leaving net bank debt at £130k.

These are fantastic results from a well-run club which will enable ever-more solid foundations to be laid.  We are also one of the few clubs to qualify for the latter stages of the Champions League AND to do so profitably. Congratulations to all.

I’m participating on an online STV preview at 18:30 tonight, looking forward to the small challenge ahead.  Hope you can join us.

The event is part of our 125 4 125 campaign – central to reinvigorating the charitable spirit which is part of the club we love. It will be a family occasions, tickets are available at £10 for adults and £5 for children. The night has been organised by several fans working in conjunction with the people at Celtic Charity, so please do your best to support this great occasion. Individual tickets or tables are available, details here.

I’ll see you there.

I’ll criticise if I think it’s justified, both on and off the park but with today’s financial news and the prospect of a last 16 CL game on the horizon, it seems a strange time to vent.

  14. Given the pot loads of money that CL qualification makes available, it is all the more regrettable that that in recent years SPL Championships were thrown away due to a lack of adventure on the part of the Board.

  16. I have been struggling with feelings of hypocrisy.

I have stated my view, previously, that I am not willing to partake in a league with thems, or the former thems, if they are officially found guilty of serious financial doping, false registration, and a sham fakeover. I would rather give up the game than take part in such a farce.

Yet, here I am, desperate for the hours to wind down so I can see my team play Juventus who have already been found guilty of financial impropriety and cheating their fellow league members. Even Italian authorities who are comatosely relaxed about enforcing regulations thought it was a serious enough offence to merit two stripped titles. This team have already been found guilty of crimes of which the huns are, currently, merely accused.

So, how do I reconcile going tomorrow and not going to any putative game against Zombie FC in future. Well. I tried to rationalise it in terms of national stereotyping. Italian teams are all at it, I thought, so it is less of a big deal for them; it is almost expected. Like simulation and spitting, they are not as big offences over there because so many of them engage in it.

But, I merely ended up in bigoted forms of thinking without even convincing myself of the merits of my own argument because, even though both Milan teams and Fiorentina have also been caught up in the dodgy stuff, so too have Hearts and Kilmarnock been assembling squads beyond their ability to pay for them, and Motherwell and Dundee have both been in administration twice so the Scottish teams cannot claim any moral superiority over Italian teams and their financial practices.

I cannot condone my presence by feeling that Juve have, at least, been apologetic and remorseful of their cheating. They have not. Their fans still claim the 2 stripped titles and the club still proclaims 3 stars for 30 titles, which officially they have not reached when the stripped titles are deducted, at their training ground and elsewhere.

I am still struggling to make a moral distinction between what Juve (and others) did and what the deid club (and other Scottish & English teams) did.

However, before anyone says I am quite right and they are willing to save me from a moral dilemma by relieving me of my ticket, my hypocrisy is winning out. I am going with the line that Juve cheated other Italian teams but not me whereas Rangers cheated me and my team.

It is not the strongest argument and my value judgements are not very pure of heart but it is the best I can come up with.

Anyone got anything to ease my conscience (apart from taking my ticket, that is).

A pal was going to miss a big euro game on tv because he was working that nite

spent about an hour the previous nite showing his better half how to record the game – she was a natural, and had it all ready to record as per his precise instructions

The nite of game he gets home form the work, having managed to avoid any news of the score -looking forward to putting his feet up with a few steely dans

Him ” did you remember to record the game? ”

Her ” yes, how could I forget?”

Him “and did you get it right from the the start?”
