Celtic is my nation

381

It must seem inconceivable to the younger generation, but those older saw Scotland compete at World Cups in 1974, 78, 82, 86, 90 and 98.  When I turned 35, the only tournaments Scotland had not reached in my lifetime happened when I was 3 and 27.  Wales had never been there (still on a 64 year dry patch) and England missed out in 74, 78 and 94.

Back then, it meant something to me; today, I’m all about the Celtic.  That nationalism thing has gone, Celtic is my nation and the only flag that represents me.  If Scotland lose, it will not move the dial of my mood one degree.

If anything could come close to changing this, it’s a former Scotland captain wanting Ukraine to win at Hampden tonight in the ludicrous belief that would send a message to the Kremlin.  A child-like belief that football support can impact a man who is prepared to kill thousands.

Still, the World Cup is always a great sporting event, the younger generation has been robbed of the meaningful interest many of us had, it is churlish for me to “humbug” at what I once enjoyed.  There’s also Callum McGregor to think about.  He would grace the tournament as the heartbeat of the Scotland side and deserves the chance to perform on the top international stage.

So for the younger generation, Callum, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston, best of luck tonight.  Just don’t ask me to stand for a blue flag.

  1. The list of top Glasgow pubs earlier has made me quite sad.

My golden era out and about in the big city was late 80s to early 90s and was the best time for pubs/bars/clubs/venues IMHO.

I come home now and have no idea where to go on a night out. For Celtic games it is Drover, Babbity, Kitty O’Shea. My daughter asked me what my favourite Glasgow pub was and I couldn’t answer. My only link to the old days is Horseshoe so i said that.

    Places I miss:

Fixx – various entities since and i sometimes go in

    Brunswick Cellars – gone

    Ed de Bevnicks – gone

John st Jam (another bar there but haven’t tried it)

Rock Garden (seems to be a place there now. Will check it out)

    Cafe Noir (Drouthy now?)

Caskies (was a clatty Irish pub then an Indian cafe)

O’Henry’s (became the crappy Yes bar)

Brahms and Lizt (restaurant i think)

    Griffin

Oblomov (Byres Road , a cafe now i think)

    Arches (gone)

    Volcano (demolished)

Fury Murrys (re-opened for 2 one offs; I want it back but with bigger toilets)

Cleopatras (great nights with the hospital workers – gone and so if hospital)

Also, Sauchiehall St used to be lively with pubs and clubs (Reds, Garage etc). Walked up it recently and 80% of properties are empty

I need a pint to cheer up or get a time machine back to 1990!!

  2. I want a Scotland victory tonight and get as far as poss.

I want Celtic to excel,to do that Celtic players need to compete at the highest levels possible,on a club front that is here first then Europe, internationally that means getting picked for their country,Celtic are a Scottish club why should their players be limited? As Ange says that’s what every Celtic player should aspire to(play for their country),so that’s good enough for me,whatever country they play for,it would be a little infantile not to,its easy to say f the sfa, they are the cranks pro football is run by,supporting my country is nowt to do wi them.

I think if Scotland done well,it would have a positive dividend for all of us wanting a better game.

The fleg as it was in Ireland say from 88 90,94 was taken back by the people from a time when it was used mainly in the North.

The fleg was also adopted at England 90 and 96,taking ownership away the from extreme right.

Both examples of where Ord people took back ownership of their national symbols from those on the edges

Paul.’the nationalism has gone’ ….smiled at that.close seasons eh! Am sure we’ll not here anymore on it lols

    Coney Bhoy 2.50pm

Late 80s early 90s every Friday happy hour in the Rock Garden … as for The Griffin worked in bath street for a number of years and old pie, chips n beans and a pint was our lunchtime starter…

The Griffin still on the go as far as I know

  6. GFTB

Griffin didn’t re-open after lockdown. You’re right that it was still going up to 2020 – I through it in due to the current situation. Great pub over the years

Didn’t realise it had closed, I suppose a lot of its trade was from the Kings Theatre and not many pubs can last with no business for a couple of years

  9. prestonpans bhoys on

Last time I attended a Scotland game was in the world cup in Spain in 82. Was right behind the goal for the famous ‘toe poke’ against Brazil.

Not been back since, simply because I lost interest and could watch it from the pub. Doesn’t stop me supporting them though👏👏

  10. TONTIME TIM

Indeed, inclined to agree with yir da! I thought they would have won one by now with the pool they have to draw from.

  14. Coneybhoy, our paths must have crossed in our youth. Every Friday would be a train into town, a few in OHenrys then round to Fixx in Miller Street for the night. Saw a fair few good bands in Fixx in the late 80s.

Saturdays would be OHenrys then downstairs in the Rock Garden, and Sundays would be The Mission in Battlefield then off to Fury’s to round off the weekend.

That would no doubt kill me nowadays…!

  15. BB 4.00pm

ha ha … no excuses, was in the office on Monday so working from home the day … so just a case from the room to the living room as soon as I turn the PC off which will be in the next 10mins :-)

  16. Went from poacher to gamekeeper, ended up bar manager in the Granary, then O’Henrys and onto The Exchequer in the mid 90s before I realised I needed a grown up job that would get me home before 3am each morning…

  17. could todays headlines be summed up in song ……………

Definitely must have rubbed shoulders. Mission was my local 88-90 and for a bit in 1992/3,

Tunnel was one I forgot – used to go on indie Thursdays early 90s. Drank in Ross’s on Mitchell lane, then we pushed into the tunnel queue as we came out the door – cheeky gets

I have no great passion for international football in general but I want Scotland to win when they play.

In years gone by it was easier for me to get tickets for Scotland games for my tribe than it was for Celtic Park so I took them 2 or 3 times a season whereas when taking them to Celtic I could only take them one at a time.

Why, however, P67’s dislike of his countries football team required an article on CQN is beyond me.

Based upon the recent venture into the world of unionism it’s political posturing I guess.

  20. It’ll be a strange experience watching CalMac and not wanting to see him win but that’s probably where I’ll be tonight. I’d prefer to see our Scottish bhoys remain in Glasgow with Ange come December rather than hitting the heat of Qatar mid season.

I’m surprised that Goldson has signed a new contract at the huns. I would have thought a championship side would have been in a position to offer him more than Sevco but that obviously wasn’t the case. Offering a 30yo a 4 year deal on what I assume is at least Ramsey level wages of 40K a week is crazy.

Before the Europa final P67 spoke of the huns being able to command more money for any players wanting away this summer – Goldson signing a new contract would tend to disprove that theory. He was a free agent and the huns were the best he could do.

  21. Changing face of Glasgow pubs 78- 80s

  22. I hate how we are treated in Scotland but I still want Scotland to win, although I want our players to return injury-free even more. I too remember the days when the likes of Jinky were booed and Billy McNeil was overlooked. I think the worst episode was dropping Kenny Dalglish when he would have equalled Young’s record.

Only in Scotland could the best ever European team have a paltry number of caps. I wonder how many the team fae Govan accumulated during the same period.

  23. Tipping point for me was ‘74 World Cup watching Jinky warming up and that bar steward, Ormond, still didn’t put him on. Criminal.

Was enticed back only once- to watch The Maestro’s debut ( vs some South American team if I recall correctly)……was boo-ed throughout. Well at least throughout the first half as I walked out at half time. Never been back.

    Come on Ukraine

  24. Was reading the other day that Danny Drinkwater has left Chelsea after playing only 12 games (cost £35m) – had several loans ending at Reading who narrowly avoided relegation.
