Celtic is my nation

381

It must seem inconceivable to the younger generation, but those older saw Scotland compete at World Cups in 1974, 78, 82, 86, 90 and 98.  When I turned 35, the only tournaments Scotland had not reached in my lifetime happened when I was 3 and 27.  Wales had never been there (still on a 64 year dry patch) and England missed out in 74, 78 and 94.

Back then, it meant something to me; today, I’m all about the Celtic.  That nationalism thing has gone, Celtic is my nation and the only flag that represents me.  If Scotland lose, it will not move the dial of my mood one degree.

If anything could come close to changing this, it’s a former Scotland captain wanting Ukraine to win at Hampden tonight in the ludicrous belief that would send a message to the Kremlin.  A child-like belief that football support can impact a man who is prepared to kill thousands.

Still, the World Cup is always a great sporting event, the younger generation has been robbed of the meaningful interest many of us had, it is churlish for me to “humbug” at what I once enjoyed.  There’s also Callum McGregor to think about.  He would grace the tournament as the heartbeat of the Scotland side and deserves the chance to perform on the top international stage.

So for the younger generation, Callum, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston, best of luck tonight.  Just don’t ask me to stand for a blue flag.

  1. I don’t know much about the Wales team other than Bale but I’d fancy Ukraine to win it. Blood and snotters football in the last 15 minutes not enough for Scotland.

  2. Congratulations Ukraine,by far better team tonight, better passers better running, better energy

    No luck Scotland,beaten tonight.

    Any potential Celts there?

Couple of great midfielders in there

Useless. We tried for about 20 minutes. Where was the passion we needed? Hard to believe how utterly crap we are. Englandshire gubbed this team 4-0 last time they played them.

So yet again, we are sitting outside another World Cup, with our noses up against the glass, watching real football teams contest the games.

Well, at least we don’t have to worry about our players going to Qatar.

Ukraine has a pool 9 times the size of Scotland to chose from.

    So?

  6. Game was too big for SC and his NT.

The lack of leadership in the squad is incredible.

Relegation fodder and never wizzers — what chance did we have?

Not even energy or desire — just blank looks into space.

    BG — lost.

AH — didn’t even show up to get lost.

GH / LC — totally out of their depth.

SC started with the wrong shape / tactics / team.

Apart from that he looked every inch the details coach that he is.

Great for keeping journeymen in the EPL.

Out of his depth dealing with a NT on a part time basis.

Our performance in the Euros is where we are stuck.

Play football against a technical team — not a hope.

Ukraine also drew in competitive games vs France who are current world champs both home and away.

A bit different to meaningless friendlies.

They will beat Wales. And reach last 16 at least in Qatar.

Utterly, utterly anonymous. The Ukrainian midfield passed him at will. If he got the ball at all, he promptly lost it. I once saw him have a great game at Chelski, but he was among 9 first class outfield players who were moving into space constantly. Nobody in that Scottish team tonight showed the game intelligence, speed or fitness to do that.

Only 1 country has ever won a World Cup which has a population less than theirs.

    Maybe that’s a clue.

More players should equal more potential in a game which is as easy to play as football.

You are making a load of excuses why Ukraine are better then us when the truth is………….we are pish.

Manager, tactics, players (for the most part) pish. Ruling body… absolute pish.

    Aceept it …….and relax.

Hell, the transfer will be opening soon.

“A bit different to meaningless friendlies.”

    ———————————

Englandshire 4 Ukraine 0 wasn’t a meaningless friendly. Far from it. It was a quarter final tie in Euro 21. If they pass Wales, and I agree they probably will, it wouldn’t surprise me if Englandshire repeated that score in Qatar ( despite not having home advantage ).

McGinn,McTominay…£50-70 million, give me Callum McGregor any day of the week

    Edit

  15. Hickey super poor until the game was lost.

Calmac tried a leg but was surrounded by players that looked spooked until 60 mins plus

Another Nadal v Djokovic would be the tonic now !

That was sublime sport at its best. Despite my dislike of the gamesmanship of the Spaniard his skill is insanely good. And Novak having the mental fortitude to deal with the partisan crowd when he was being beaten hands down in the first hour and half was incredible.

Hopefully the next 5 weeks give us more of that to enjoy.

  17. The sight of SA getting the ball with 60 seconds of the game remaining and slowing down / unsure what to do so that in the end he passes it 5 yards back to AR so that he will have the responsibility of actually doing something with it will live long in the memory.

We were scared of our own shadows never mind the opposition.

Some countries have a NT set up that grows limited individuals into a better unit.

We have a society / public persona / expectations that cannot deal with the new or the strange.

SC has talent as a coach but NT football is more than that.

Team had far too many limited players that cannot make the jump between league certainties / predictability and international challenges / volatility.

We have had similar issues regarding our performances in the SPL and our many failures in Europe.

  18. Che Adams is Scotlands best striker … play his club teammate Armstrong behind him … will help the midfield … nothing against big Lyndon Dykes … but what international team these days go with 2 strikers up top

Stevie Clarke must be believing his own press, don’t think he played two up front with Killie in his time there

  19. Just put the 10 o’clock news on, on the BEEB.

Depp v Heard court case is the headline news.

Seriously, with what is going on in the whole world, who gives a f*ck?

  20. Is that a loss for Scotland or a loss for the Republic of The United Kingdom? Maybe Scotland would have won the pre-match penalty shoot-out (Petec Biblical psycho babel).

I’ll say this for the U.S. – year on year, they are making huge strides. The women are already dominant, starting from scratch. The men get flak because the Women have already won the World Cup a couple of times, ( and now get exactly the same in compensation ) but each year more of them go the Pulisic route and are picked up by the EPL, Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1. I think they will give Englandshire a harder time than their previous World Cup Finals clash, which finished 1-1 with Seethin’ G scoring for the Sassenachs.

I think the Sates will get there eventually but feel they have a bit to go yet.

    We’ll see.

  23. Why are people picking on Gilmour.Childish nonsense. He left the scum who could see millions in their eyes for

his transfer.Absolute nonsense about a young kid who will have big future ahead of him.Pick on the real culprits.A manager that plays Patterson, without a game, instead of Ralston, then when he is out continue to ignore him.
