Celtic is my nation

381

It must seem inconceivable to the younger generation, but those older saw Scotland compete at World Cups in 1974, 78, 82, 86, 90 and 98.  When I turned 35, the only tournaments Scotland had not reached in my lifetime happened when I was 3 and 27.  Wales had never been there (still on a 64 year dry patch) and England missed out in 74, 78 and 94.

Back then, it meant something to me; today, I’m all about the Celtic.  That nationalism thing has gone, Celtic is my nation and the only flag that represents me.  If Scotland lose, it will not move the dial of my mood one degree.

If anything could come close to changing this, it’s a former Scotland captain wanting Ukraine to win at Hampden tonight in the ludicrous belief that would send a message to the Kremlin.  A child-like belief that football support can impact a man who is prepared to kill thousands.

Still, the World Cup is always a great sporting event, the younger generation has been robbed of the meaningful interest many of us had, it is churlish for me to “humbug” at what I once enjoyed.  There’s also Callum McGregor to think about.  He would grace the tournament as the heartbeat of the Scotland side and deserves the chance to perform on the top international stage.

So for the younger generation, Callum, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston, best of luck tonight.  Just don’t ask me to stand for a blue flag.

  1. And another thing…..

I remember when we played out of the England press in Wembley and limited them to one chance.

I then remember being disappointed how overawed Ukraine looked in the QF 0-4.

Then allowing for their fitness and mental stress, they somehow played us off the park tonight.

I’m over it (honest) but that was a opportunity missed today and would have been a great match in Cardiff.

Anyhoo – Celtic is my nation, now.

None of those countries has any form of scale professional football history. Indeed until the past 30 years only Nigeria even took it that seriously.

My point is a simple one. Scale matters in the long run.

Of course small nations can win on the odd occasion but the odds are against it.

Trust me though I felt there was a lot we could have done better tonight. I hate it that my son has never seen Scotland at a World Cup.

Virgil on his own would have done better than Hanley and Cooper put together. Amateurish doesn’t even cover it.

Emdy looking forward to our games against Armenia and the Republic in the next 10 days?

    No? Who’d a thunk it?

  6. Celtic, Champions of Europe, population 5 million, population of Italy 50 million plus.

  7. Too many EPL journeymen in Clarke’s team. Actually think a Scottish League eleven could have performed better. Steve went with the hype that is Norwich, Leeds, Southampton, et al, plus QPR and Bournemouth was it? Nobody to write home about. Onwards to the Euro Nations League!

As I said there are exceptions but only uraguay in the World Cup.

Greece and Portugal also in euros but fundementally in world cups the big countries and those with football traditions prevail for a good reason.

After feeding on a rich diet of fast , creative , attacking football from the Celts this season , watching that Scotland team was like poorhouse gruel.

I’m not digging up Gilmour, my Butbutbut Bbbbiiilllly is a dig at MSM

However, compare and contrast – Bobby Murdoch who could get a game for any team but Scotland with BILLY Gilmour who can’t get a game for anybody it Scotland- hun PR at its worst – add Paterson and you see how weak Clark is.

Time for CalMac to retire from international football, methinks. He will turn 29 later this month.

I expected Scotland to lose so I’m not too down.

The better team with the better players won. However:

How in hell does a country of 5m not have ONE striker??? Our front two were Dykes (Australian) and Adams (English).

6 of their team are home based players who haven’t played football for months yet they played us off the park!

The first half was awful but I thought we improved immediately when Christie replaced Dykes at HT and we improved even further when Armstrong replaced Gilmour on 68 mins. in fact, we were for the first time in the ascendancy. If not for a missed sitter by McGinn we could have been looking at extra time.

Perhaps Clarke has now learned the lesson that Strachan learned too late. Play your best players – even if that means most of them have a Celtic connection!!

    Ya Fud!!!

Just put the 10 o’clock news on, on the BEEB.

Depp v Heard court case is the headline news.

Seriously, with what is going on in the whole world, who gives a f*ck?

    ###

The case is being regarded as some sort of bellwether for the issue of domestic abuse. I can’t see it myself but I think that’s why it’s getting the prominence it’s getting.

    Totally agree!.

Strachan’s big problem as Scotland manager was that if he played his strongest team he’d have started 7 Celtic players and had another 4 on the bench. When he finally started picking Calmac, Armstrong and Griff he won 7 in a row but it was too late to save his job!

Clarke would have had a better chance with Ralston, Taylor and Turnbull tonight than McTominey, Cooper and Gilmour – and that’s a FACT!!!

  19. PHILBHOY on 1ST JUNE 2022 10:06 PM

The other reason the case is getting so much media coverage is that it highlights the difference between the libel laws here and the US.

The media of course have a dog in the fight in that they are so often hamstrung by UK libel laws being so restrictive.

  23. Bottom line…………better players…………better coach.

Was thinking about Celtic and thought is there a Scottish centre we could buy who plays in Scotland……..no.

We need a complete over hall of Scottish football and that is not going to happen.

    We are miles behind.

    Wrong thinking.

You wouldn’t get agreement from Ange or Calum.

Both speak positively of how it adds to their football in Calmacs case and how it is better and more prestigious for Celtic the more who play international football.

Is it just because its Scotland? What say Cal was captain of R.o .I? Germany France ?
