Celtic is my nation

381

It must seem inconceivable to the younger generation, but those older saw Scotland compete at World Cups in 1974, 78, 82, 86, 90 and 98.  When I turned 35, the only tournaments Scotland had not reached in my lifetime happened when I was 3 and 27.  Wales had never been there (still on a 64 year dry patch) and England missed out in 74, 78 and 94.

Back then, it meant something to me; today, I’m all about the Celtic.  That nationalism thing has gone, Celtic is my nation and the only flag that represents me.  If Scotland lose, it will not move the dial of my mood one degree.

If anything could come close to changing this, it’s a former Scotland captain wanting Ukraine to win at Hampden tonight in the ludicrous belief that would send a message to the Kremlin.  A child-like belief that football support can impact a man who is prepared to kill thousands.

Still, the World Cup is always a great sporting event, the younger generation has been robbed of the meaningful interest many of us had, it is churlish for me to “humbug” at what I once enjoyed.  There’s also Callum McGregor to think about.  He would grace the tournament as the heartbeat of the Scotland side and deserves the chance to perform on the top international stage.

So for the younger generation, Callum, David Turnbull, Greg Taylor and Anthony Ralston, best of luck tonight.  Just don’t ask me to stand for a blue flag.

  1. Good morning from a sunny North Staffs – not surprised at the result or performance last night.

Will be heading for the caravan in North Wales later this morning for the 4 days. Will I be able to avoid the jubilee hype – probably not.

There’s a reason the vast majority of countries don’t have a monarchy.

  2. Scotland are away to The Irish Republic on 11th June so no rest for Calmac and the bhoys just yet

  3. Sláinte Ange on

Japan v Paraguay at 11.00 Paradise time today.

I know it’s only a friendly but I (sad git) will be watching to see if Kyogo & Maeda play.

In fact, I will be cheering on Japan in the world cup.

  4. Good morning cqn from a beautiful sunny morning in the Garngad.

Hard luck Scotland last night, jury is out on Hickey for me, Ralston would have done just as good if not better at RB.

Hey ho had Wales, Poland, Ukrane and Scotland all to score @ 9/2.

Good morning from sunny East Lothian.

Think Clarke will end up like WGS, by the time he ignores media favourites, Gilmore for example, his time will be up.

  6. Last summer twenty four teams qualified for the Euros. Take away the minnows, your Pharoes, your Marinos and Andorras, your Liechties and Bourgers that’s pretty much half of UEFA turning up. We got in through the back door, outplayed by the Czechs, outclassed by Croatia and a draw at Wembley where our midfield matched England’s. True we beat Denmark, this time, but they had qualified months earlier. Since then we have regressed, and so have our players, our starting central defenders are from the worst defences in the EPL. Ukraine, like Croatia, are a level above us so now (2022 – 1998) twenty four years since we last played in the World Cup finals. A Scottish League select could have done better last night.

  7. My friends in Celtic,

We were well beaten last night. No excuses on the football aspect.

Using the 5m population of Scotland as an excuse is disingenuous. We have a much bigger pool to choose from as the link below demonstrates.

However, this game was always going to be difficult for obvious non football reasons. Ukraine should have been give a free ride. It was not fair to the Scotland team to have to play this ” unwinnable ” World event.

Oh a big well done to the Scotland fans. They were winners.

Not the one’s passing my place pre match-banging on cars, p*shing in every side street, allowed seemingly to drink in the streets, many beyond drunk. There are different rules for them. You wouldn’t get into to Celtic Park in some of the states they were in.

  10. Martim 1980,

Sorry to hear that. I know there have been complaints around Hampden for many years.

Unfortunately this behaviour is not unusual before any large gathering. Football, concerts, celebrations etc.

On the world stage the fans did Scotland proud in a contest that was impossible.

I do take your point though about Celtic Park. In general the behaviour of our fans has been excellent, and that is why we get so many families in attendance, but the bushes coming from the Gallowgate do get watered frequently. ( They are growing magnificently )

    Cheers and HH.

  11. Swap the two goalies last night and it would have been an even more comfortable night for Ukraine.

Very impressed with left wing back Zinchenko. Can see why the City Group took a punt on him a few years ago. Would fit Ange’s preferred style of play perfectly. However, his next move will probably be an Arsenal/Tottenham/Newcastle if he can’t get a regular game at Man City.

Scotland were just Scotland. Not even glorious failure this time.

  12. Gilmour is not to blame. Its the manager who seems starstruck by the Media’s lust to make stars out of Hun players.Patterson, may well go on to a good career, but not at the moment.Same with Gilmour. We have one of these guys,Gilmour, that showed he cared not a jot for them, walking out.Why he gets stick on here is my problem. Its the manager that picks them to blame. To pick Patterson before Tony is an act of sheer folly.

If I met Gilmour in a boozer I would send him a drink for the kick in the cobblers he delivered to the Huns.

  14. Saw the quick highlights of Argentina v Italy (Europe v SA cup thing) last night

Might be worth putting money on Argentina now – looked deadly

Kyogo and Daizen on bench for Japan. Where’s Iniquitousiv with live updates? 🤔🤣

  16. Shocking performance from Scotland last night.Lacklustre from kick off and got worse.Think it all got to them.

  17. Here’s my theory: When selecting a team you should ask: do they play in a decent league? Do they win things? Do they play in European competitions and thus have experience of very different kinds of teams than they have week in week out? How are they performing currently?

Why Tony Ralston was left out is inexplicable by reason.

On a side note: why Aaron Hickey was given his first cap and played out of position in such an important game is inexplicable by reason.

Apart from Clarke not being able to see his “best” team we have too many players who are in teams that are not in top half of their league, have won nothing and don’t play in Europe and were not playing that well last season.

I think Scotland have been left behind in international football. I don’t see a way forward, certainly not in the short term. I don’t expect them to accomplish anything.

  18. Tim Malone Will Tell on

There is a thesis that could be written tracing the decline of Scottish football back to Murray and his vanity project, funded by OPM.

  19. I’d have been OK, though not delighted, had Steve Clarke became our manager. So happy that we have Ange. I’d have liked to see Scotland progress but not distraught that they haven’t. If we (the only we, Celtic) had lost a crucial game last night, I wouldn’t have slept and would be totally down today.

There is a thesis that could be written tracing the decline of Scottish football back to Murray and his vanity project, funded by OPM.

    True.

And you heard Souness’s attitude to Scotland winning as Paul noted yesterday.he brought the convicted tax avoiding criminal here.

AT, “convicted tax avoiding criminal”. That’s a bigger hun cast list than Ben Hur. The South African reprobate?

  22. prestonpans bhoys on

There’s a large number of non Celtic/Old Firm FC fans who would attach the demise of Scottish football down to the gates not being split.

Yip I still hear that arguement from over 50’s plus😵age group

  23. SC still has issues with us because when BR left we overlooked him and went for NL.

Mental decision at every level — NL was shown the door in 2014 because he had ideas above his station / wasn’t a good enough coach by a country mile.

Consequently to go back when we had a coach of SC’s ability close at hand was just another example of PL making an erse of it.

SC has his strengths but the NT gig seems to be beyond him.

He is wearing L plates trying to deal with the media / the scrutiny / the hype / the expectation.

Playing AH out of position in such a big game reeks of desperation / listening to media hype.

Keeping him their when all you could see were the bubbles was horrific.

Not even putting DT on the bench was just another form of self harm.

Playing 3 in the MF with no DM / proper pivot was another catastrophe.

JMcG is an effective player — limited but very effective — if he is played to his strengths.

That is narrow focus / working the channel with a lot of support.

He was like a forest creature living in a prairie — lost / lonely / isolated.

BG is a talent but he is currently undercooked / relegation fodder.

Three in the MF meant that he was too open and the focus of their efforts.

CMcG defensively was like playing a youth player in the CL final.

They walked the ball around him with swagger bordering on contempt.

He was our most effective / best player but still he did not play with confidence / conviction.

There are many reasons why Norwich / Leeds are relegation fodder.

Unfortunately two of them were playing in our defence.

We were poorly set up last night — very nervous from the off.

Wee boys in a man’s world and we got gubbed.

The game was too big for us.

    SC is not the answer.

    The Euro’s showed his limitations.

Coach the NT — could work.

Manage the NT — totally out of his depth.
