Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  1. I clearly remember the 1-0 game in 1980 with Murdo’s sclaffed shot winning the tie. Nearly took the roof off the Jungle where i was standing

Also remember the horrendous pictures in the Scottish press of the injuries suffered by a number of Celtic fans out there

Not a place for the faint hearted

  2. Paul 67 11.09

    Me too.

0-0 as a first leg result is always underrated, but the psyhcological lift of not conceading an away goal can never be underestimated.

  3. This will be quite a challenge but we have a chance – so long as there are no last minute phantom penalties. I hope Juve are not tempting their old pal Helmut Krug to dust down his whistle.

  4. They have Buffon, Barzagli, Chiellini, Bonucci, Pirlo, Marchisio Quagliarella and Giovinco from Italy

They have Isla and Vidal from Chile, Caceres from Argentina and Vucinic from Montenegro.

They have Swiss, Ghanaian and Danish Internationals in their squad.

And they are going to be looking down their noses at Tony Watt, Scott Brown, Kelvin Wilson and Kris Commons.

If we get a strong ref we can do something here, hard though it will be.

  5. Juventus caused some controversy when they won their last Scudetto when they put a phrase on their strip – “20 on the pitch,” a reference to the stripped titles due to match fixing, for which they were also relegated.

Italian teams wear a star above their badge for every ten titles, and Juventus would have been entitled to a second badge were it not for the ones they were stripped of.

We could almost just imagine we are playing the now-defunct Rangers FC!

  6. Priority should be a clean sheet at CP. A goal for us would be a bonus. Sammi will get his ‘usual’ away goal in Turin so they’ll need at least 2 to win!!

  7. There are only 3 teams left in the CL that I wouldnt give us a cats chance against, Real, Bayern and Dortmund, anyone else is fair game in the quarters etc

PL;s comments are interesting, “we will have a stronger team at the end of the window than at the begining” I take that to mean that at least one of our biggies is leaving but that we have lined up a replacement

  8. Scene: Lake Tahoe, Nevada

Michael Corleone glances at Al Neri, who is peeling a (symbolic) orange

Al Neri: “Difficult. But not impossible”.

  9. 50 shades of green on

not one i wanted for the away fans safety.

but football wise if we dont lose any of our big players in the “windae ” and stay injury free with one or 2 others coming back from injury then we dont have to fear juve.

just waiting on the dates being confirmed now.

    Many thanks……

  11. I hope the referees are made aware of the very recent match fixing involving Juventus ,and manager Bruno Conte ,who is just back from a suspension for it.

  12. real shame we were unable to land Del Piero!

it’s going to be a very hard pair of games to come through but nothing it beyond this team.

I too have heard some bad stories about being an away fan there but was at the interim ground 4(?) years ago and the home and away fans were right beside each other on the way in and no trouble.

  13. terrific draw, notts county at home, ru sure it’s the champions league and not a resurrected Pan-British Cup.

    ;-)

Seriously, besides Bayern & Borussia, couldn’t be tougher than Juventus, vv small chance of success. Best of success to Neil & the Bhoys.

I’m sure it’ll be Big Vic doing a number on Pirlo and adding another few million onto his value

  16. Celtic manager Neil Lennon tells Sky Sports News: “In terms of glamour it is great. In terms of qualification it is going to be very tough. But we will take it as it comes and our supporters will be looking forward to this match. Juventus are littered with world-class stars and they have been very consistent over the last 18 months. But coming through the group as impressively as we did, and you never know where you are going to be in a few months time. This club is built on the legends of Jock Stein and the Lisbon Lions, this team is reaching those same heights again. They have belief in themselves and have been playing very well away from home.”

  17. My prediction is 1-0 to the Bhoys at CP and 1-1 in Turin. Now that is out the way who do we fancy in the last 8?

We will look to come out the transfer window stronger PL that will do for me.

I am sure Lenny and JP will have 1 or 2 up their sleeves.

We’re the famous Glasgow Celtic and we’re going to Wembeeeelllleee.

    Bring it on.

    HH

  18. Juve 10/1 to win the big cup, Barca favourites so based on this we should have a better chance at beating Juve considering our results against Barca.

We are 125/1 to win at Wembeleee, Hail!! Hail!

  19. stevo-Juventus have a history of match fixing,Conte was banned for turning a blind eye at his previous club.Explain.

  20. Juventus are interested in signing Corinthians striker Paolo Guerrero, 28, who scored the goal which beat Chelsea’s in the Club World Cup final last weekend.
