Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  1. Might be worth checking out cheap ski deals for those of you that can spare a week (especially if you ski or board). Places like Sauze d’Oulx are only about an hour or so on the train from Turin.

  2. jude2005 is Neil Lennon \o/ on

They said no chance and we were in for a right scuddin V Barca. Juve? Whats the prob????

  3. If we beat Juve does the draw mean we get either Shalke or Galatasaray in the last 8 or is it a completely new draw after this round?

  4. Bada

Agreed – penalty was a shocker.

It is a sad situation that we are calling for fair refereeing in the world’s greatest club competition.

I was not particularly defending Juve or Conte – just trying to be clear on what they were guilty of recently.

Personally I think owing (say) 500m euros in tax is as bad …… and we beat that at CP a few weeks ago!

Financial fair play or football will be dead in a decade!!!

  5. Celtic Soul Brother- Supporting Kano 1000 on

  7. Paul 67, I think one of the London CQN annuals is actually winging its way over here to Germany, don’t ask!

I’m beginning to think a couple of nights in Glasgow v Juve may be more enjoyable / safer than a visit to Turin. Was there for Scotland v Brazil in 1990 WC. Of the remaining teams the only places I have not been before are Turkey, Ukraine and Madrid. So maybe keep my Euro trip for the quarters ;-).

  8. Cumbernauld No 1 on

Hamilton Tim – From Memory the next draw is a new draw and includes quarters/semis and home team in Final. Europa League drawn at same time for Last 16 Quarters etc.

  9. If Hooper scores the goals that put Juve out they will probably come in and buy him in the summer.

  10. You could get a week B&B at the Palace Hotel on Lake Como departing 4th March for £357 from Edinburgh on Teletext Holidays. It’s just over an hour away from Turin.

  11. From the Juve website

Nedved: “We’ll face Celtic with plenty of respect”

Pavel Nedved says Juventus will need to show Celtic plenty of respect when the two sides lock horns in February’s Champions League last 16 encounter.

The 40-year-old, who played at Celtic Park back in 2001, is fully aware of the threat posed by Neil Lennon’s charges after they claimed a famous win over Barcelona in this year’s group stages.

Speaking in Nyon after the draw, Nedved said: “It could have gone a lot worse, but we still need to face Celtic with great respect. They were the only team to beat Barcelona and have qualified for the next round with great credit.

“We’re on a path of development, but many of our players are playing Champions League football for the first time in their careers and will need to be up to the challenge.

“We’ll be stepping into a red-hot atmospere and will encounter difficulties if we’re fully up to speed. We need to match their intensity, hoping that our players have something extra on a technical level.

“Playing the return leg at home, in front of our public, certainly gives us a slight advantage. If we put in a Juventus style performance then we’ll have a good chance of getting through to the next round.”

  12. Phil revisits “Thugs & Thieves” in his latest.

Recently in the press we had Celtic “struggling” a the top of the SPL.

Not a lot seems to have changed in ten years.

  13. KevJungle, thank you.

Laird of the Smiles, excellent. Thanks.

    Celtic Mac, yes, agree.

SFTB, if you need a butcher you’re doing it wrong.

  14. If we keep a clean sheet at Celtic Park I predict we will be in the draw for the last 8.

Setting up like we did in the Camp Nou, with Samaras, Hooper and Commons and wee Forrest to come on when legs are tired we will score in Turin.

Are Juve better than Barca? No.

Are Juve better than Benfica? A little.

They are very good at the back but lack a real dangerman up front that would propel them into a Tier 1 side. If they sort that out in January it will be a different story although there are not many floating about who will not be cup tied.

Our name was in that pot today on merit. Play as we have been this year and it is Juve who will need to match or better Barca’s attacking strength and I am not sure Juve have that in them.

The draw is very favourable for a dark horse to have a run this year. Some big hitters will be going out.

We have an excellent chance here bhoys.

    COYBIG

  15. Juventus play Fiorentina at home prior to travelling to Glasgow on Feb 12th. That is a similar fixture to us playing Hearts. The following weekend they face another big fixture away to Roma

Prior to us travelling to Turin they face Napoli at home. Good to know they have important Serie A fixtures either side of facing us

Additional problem could be Drogba signing next month for them
