Celtic-Juve after two previous tight encounters

1074

Celtic will play Juventus in the last 16 round of the Champions League.  Juve are seven points clear top of the Italian league having won the competition last season without losing a game.  They eliminated reigning European champions, Chelsea, in the last round and finished above a good Shakthar team.

They are remarkably well organised and don’t lose many goals (10 in 17 league games, 7 less than anyone else), but this is a tie Celtic can plan for.  Juventus will present the same kind of challenge Barcelona did in the group stage, but they are not as effective as the Catalans.

Celtic have faced them twice in the European Cup/Champions League previously, winning both home games and losing away on each occasions, controversially in 2001.

I’m up for this one. Fairy-tale story with the lovable Celts the only British representatives in the quarter finals? Loins girded.

  1. Marrakesh Express @ 13:07 I listened to it for the first time in years last night.

I agreed with the caller who described it as something like ritualised boredom.

Allegiances aside, the quoting of three words from six months ago in the manner of court room proceedings hardly moves things along. I found it difficult to give my attention to the show because within seconds of some callers’ first utterances one knew what they were going to spout for the next 2 or 3 minutes.

  2. The Polish boy Milik has joined Leverkusen – interesting to see how he fares against Benfica in the EL – if he plays of course!

    HH!!

  3. Disappointed with £37 for a ticket for Juve game. Not a person that normally criticises the money men but think they could have kept cost down for season ticket holders…….

  4. this EL draw looks mad, more balls in jars than there is on my estate christmas tree, did they have a practice draw and will it turn out the same

  5. Read with interest comments regarding going to Turin

I’m old enough to remember 1981 when our people were attacked with swords and our buses were left without a window

I was there in 2001 and was refused entry in various supermarkets, shops and bars for the crime of being ‘inglese’

I was also subjected to having plastic bottles filled with urine thrown at me in the stadium and, along with the rest of the Celtic aupport that night, was offered after a lock-in a square go by riot squads who would have loved nothin better than caving our heads in.

These people do not care for our hard earned reputation and will look to cause us as much hassle and intimidation as possible

These people may well be lovely outwith the realms of football but I got one will not be giving them the chance to prove they’ve changed

  9. The draw

The odds against it being the same as the practice run are not that high with the amount of teams that could not be paired together…

  10. paul67 etal.

I was hoping for a better draw than Juventus, smaller Stadium, fans that can get aggressive at times,so I think I shall miss the away leg, hoping that Celtic comes through the tie and we can get a more friendly bunch of fans to shout at.

I was hoping we got Malaga where the temperature is near enough guaranteed to be in the 20s, wouldn’t need my thermal longjohns in Malaga.maybe get them in the Q/Finals?.

You could be right mate but considering the funds paid out by ST holders when Scottish Football is in a state of flux as well as home ties in Scottish and League Cup and the CL package, I do think they could have done something to recognise the significant cost we have had this season for, Champions Leage apart, pretty turgid football.

  14. Tallybhoy thanks for reminding me.

In fact I remember google mapping the street view of a more detailed location that you posted.

  15. Juve site.

The Bianconeri’s upcoming Champions League rivals Celtic boast a rich and prestigious history.

The Bhoys, founded in 1888, have lifted 43 Scottish championships, 35 Scottish cups, 14 league cups and the European Cup.

Having beaten arch-rivals Rangers to last season’s SPL title, Neil Lennon’s men have taken their good form into the current campaign and currently lead the way in Scotland with 10 victories, four draws and three defeats.

Their Champions League adventure began with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Finnish side Hjk Helskini, before a 4-0 triumph over two legs against Helsingborg secured their safe passage through to the group stages.

Backed by a vociferous crowd in Glasgow, Celtic sealed second place in Group E with ten points, clinching memorable home triumphs over Spartak Moscow and Barcelona in the process.

The Bhoys’ European record at Celtic Park, where they have registered nine victories, two draws and a solitary defeat in their last 12 outings, means Antonio Conte’s men will have to stay alert to the red-hot atmosphere that awaits them in Glasgow. Away from home, Lennon’s charges have found the target in their last seven consecutive European encounters.

  19. oldtim67 @13:37 I’ve been to a few games in Italy and that problem is endemic.

I was treated with derision and scorn, bordering on hostility, in the staffroom of a school where I worked when I revealed my weekend plan to go see Udinese v Napoli.

As is the wont of us Celts, I wore a Napoli scarf to work for the following five days.

Seriously think he could be a player for us. He just needed a run of games and staying fit. 5 goals in 15 appearances at AIK.

Tell Mo Bangura that the Juventus game is just a ‘bounce’ game and let him at ’em.
