Celtic left focus will be here for a while

284

Daizen Maeda, Yang, Benjamin Nygren, James Forrest, Michel-Ange Balikwisha – a collection of souls who have filled in wide right for Celtic this season, have I missed any?  Possibly, amid so much churn.

Behind them, we’ve had Alistair Johnston (before injury), Anthony Ralston (before injury) and Colby Donovan (before injury).  If you watch Celtic, you’ll notice how left-sided we are. Little wonder. There has been no opportunity to build partnerships on the right.

Such are the vagaries of football. Alistair’s comments about being on-track for an early return are welcome, but it will be another month before we see anything like a product partnership on the right.

This makes us more predictable, opponents will focus increasingly on Sebastian Tounekti.  Big tests lie ahead before the shape of the team looks balanced.

Re Maria Corina Machado and the Nobel Peace Prize.

I was interested to read your piece about her and why she doesn’t deserve the award. My own connection with Venezuela goes back more than fifty years. Both my kids were born in Caracas and my daughter still lives there. When I first arrived in the country Maria Corina was not yet five years old and when I left she had just turned twenty-one, so, politically, she has never been on my radar. Her family was one of the ‘Country Club Elites’, home to the old money families . The new money families were esconced in the east of the city. And money was plentiful. Oil in 1972 was just over 9 dollars a barrel but increased to more than 15 dollars after the oil embargo in 1973 and the nationalisation of the industry in 1976. Following the Iranian revolution in 1979 and the subsequent oil crisis the price of oil reached 39 dollars a barrel and they were still producing more than 2 million barrels a day. Corruption also increased to new levels. There were many political parties in Venezuela but two main parties(Accion Democratica and Copei) who swapped power every five years. Of the four presidents I experienced, Carlos Andres Perez was the one accused of corruption by his own party and impeached by the Supreme Court. He had returned to power in 1988 just after I left the country and survived two coup attempts in 1992. This corrupt two party system had been under threat for a number of years and was finally ended by Hugo Chavez in elections in1998. The fact that it was a military man who eventually broke the two party power structure didn’t come as a complete surprise…this from Wikipedia…

“Many of the participants in the coups had been members of the Partido de la Revolución Venezolana (PRV) in the 1970s. The PRV was created by ex-Communist and guerrilla fighter Douglas Bravo, who after failing in an armed insurrection, sought to infiltrate the Venezuelan armed forces to reach power. Thus, preparation for the coup began more than ten years before Pérez was re-elected in 1988.”

As a little aside, my wife and I were good friends of a family called Bravo who lived round the corner from us. On New Years Eve ’85 or ’86 we were celebrating with them at their house when, just after midnight, there was a knock at the door and in came Douglas Bravo. He had been in hiding for many years and it would be another few years before he would re-emerge. He was one of the plotters of the 1992 coups. The family were always fearful of revealing their connection to him for obvious reasons.

Anyway, Chavez was very popular for a time and did a lot for the disenfranchised poor in the shanty-towns and the countryside. His big mistake (my personal point of view) was the forming of what were called ‘colectivos’. Basically, these were armed thugs who rode around on motorbikes intimidating the so called enemies of the revolution. After Chavez died in 2013 Nicolas Maduro was chosen to see out the remainder of the President’s term in office…and he has been there ever since, becoming even more authoritarian than Chavez himself. Chavez had charisma, Maduro has the colectivos. Caracas has become a fearful place. I was there a few years ago and sensed the dreadful change. It is no surprise millions have fled the country. Violence and corruption have a stranglehold…but they have the largest proven oil reserves in the world, hence, Trump and America’s continued intervention.

As for Maria Corina Machado…well, I don’t really know what her political ideals are. She speaks highly of Trump, but in her position that is to be expected. She speaks approvingly of Israel and Netanyahu, that is unforgivable. Her award is definitely a ‘get it up you’ to Maduro and I’m glad Trump wasn’t considered and hopefully never will be…but he probably will get it, perhaps a joint award with Bibi…

The rewriting of history is astounding on here.

I think you are giving me far to much credit Owen, to re write history in a short sentence would require a better wordsmith than me

Ragers spent a week trying to woo a reluctant Steve G who did not sign a contract

    (AT☝️is a fact,that happened)

Celtic spent 3 months from March to May 2021 trying to sign Eddie Howe with apparently only a gentleman’s agreement he would be the manager again no contract signed .

((AT-Again I dont see anything anti Celtic there,I dont know if you were on cqn then,we(Celtic)were not in a good place,to my memory EddieH was given the time to gather his backroom staff. This didnt happen, some didnt fancy it,we lost out,the sport washing entered NUFC,and we at Celtic changed too,to DonMackay the new ceo))

Neil Lennon had left and the CEO Peter Lawwell was in the process of handing over the reins to Dom Mckay April 2021 Peter was going to teach Dom all about world class football operations

((AT-teach is it the ‘teach Dom world class football operations’ barb? you could suggest this was so.Dom appointed Ange, who rejuvenated our club after 9iar and failed10) again nowt anti Celtic, the mantra of ‘world class football has been forwarded by our board many times))

During that 3 months of negotiations with Eddie Howe did we take our eye of the ball so to speak in not tying Eddie Howe down to signing a deal ? Give him time to secure an EPL big club deal ? all about interpretation who really knows ? Rewriting history would mean you know for certain your version is 100% genuine

((AT-“Laxalt I think if you go back to the hurt and chaos we were in at that time questions like above where asked as we stumbled from indecision to indecision,I dont think it is anti Celtic,it was a genuine perspective of that point in time.

With hindsight now we made good decisions, tho Ange took us say to Christmas to get our full confidence as there was huns on here at time suggesting after 3 games a top6 finish may be difficult, iirc correctly they disappeared as we grew more successful under Ange))

Hope you having a good day Owen.

((AT-just reading 2 old cqnr’s view on the betterment of Celtic tfer policy then Laxalt, nowt antiCeltic, but very open to debate here))

The history of America in latin America is not one I view on favourably in particular some horrific CIA involvement in overthrowing Govts, The Regan and Oliver North scandal in Nicaragua a perfect example of America abusing its financial and political power, I also share Spikeysauldman take on some of the unacceptable recipients of the Nobel peace award, Chris Hedges is a wonderful writer he can be found here chrishedges.substack.com his Youtube channel also is a great starting point

Hedges has described himself as a socialist and an anarchist. His books Death of the Liberal Class and Empire of Illusion are strongly critical of American liberalism. Hedges’s 2007 book American Fascists describes the fundamentalist Christian right in the United States as a fascist movement.

  7. Peace prize should got to the 1st British leader who’ll pull Britain out of NATO.

Which would create World Peace with immediate effect.

Only Workers Party of Britain led by the utterly wonderful Brexit Champion, George Galloway, would have the integrity to do that.

Not many Tims would have the integrity to vote for them though.

So peace is as likely as Rodgers telling everybody that he and the club are delighted after every transfer window and sticking by those words.

    https://www.footballfancast.com/celtic-brendan-rodgers-manager-news-updates/

Wingers not working is not because the wingers are bad.

Its because Rodgers dizny know how to play wingers in the post Jinky era.

    Not Lawwell’s fault.

PS, No Deal Brexit equals an immediate United Ireland without a Border Poll.

And Celtic fans voted against Mr Corbyn’s Workers/Not/Bankers/Brexit because the all seated era of Celtic fans have gone from Provos to Pronouns. lol

None of it is Mr Galloway’s fault as if he’d been in charge Ireland would have been free in 2016, 100 years after the last near miss.

As it stands Ireland will never be free!

  10. A new tranche of work is planned to enhance the signal around Celtic Park,” the report explains. Discussions are ongoing between operators, Glasgow City Region, and local authorities. It’s about time too, because anyone who’s ever tried to blog, post, or podcast live from a match knows how impossible it is right now.

Trying to upload a photo or send an update during the game is an exercise in pure frustration.

Even just checking the halftime scores elsewhere can take several minutes. The club’s own Wi-Fi system helps a little but with sixty thousand people in one place, the available bandwidth is virtually zero. Once you’re off the internal network, you might as well be trying to get a signal from the Moon.

I can tell you personally, as someone who covers Celtic games for the blog and podcast, it’s brutal.

Good news I can stream and do my podcast. ☘️
