Celtic Let Glasgow Flourish

266

If you are 30-years-old or above, chances are you have been going to Celtic Park since a time when the stadium itself and the area around Parkhead was derelict and economically challenged.  The Parkhead Forge and Barr’s factories, large local employers in their day, were long gone.

In the early 1970s, the government attempted to regenerate inner-city areas across the country, with the Glasgow Eastern Area Renewal (GEAR) project first to launch, followed by Docklands projects in London and Liverpool.  GEAR ran for almost 20 years, but when it shuttered in 1987, the east if the city was still hopelessly impoverished.  That’s not to say it would not have been worse still, were it not for the limited impact of GEAR.

What the area lacked was an anchor project but one arrived seven years after GEAR when the foundations were laid for the new Celtic Park.

The regeneration of Celtic brought improved management to all aspects of the club and associated business, while visitor numbers increased.  A seven-day-per-week retail operation was the first step in bringing people to the area out with match days, as Celtic continued to acquire adjacent land and make improvements to the stadium environment.

This anchor sporting facility soon drew the Commonwealth Arena and the Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome, build directly opposite Celtic Park.  Glasgow had a sporting quarter, drawing athletes and well as spectators from across the globe.

Progress has not stopped.  Celtic have outline permission for a hotel to be built onsite, with a museum to follow and continually petition for a fan zone, where the tens of thousands who arrive on match day will be able to buy refreshments and access toilet facilities.

Strathclyde University’s Fraser of Allander Institute’s report on the economic impact of Celtic, published yesterday, outlines the enormous importance of the club to the economic success of the city and beyond:

Equivalent of 2820 full time jobs created.

£165m contribution to Scottish GDP.

A net inflow to Glasgow of over 1 million people in one season.

Celtic are a successful Scottish exporter, 47% of revenues come from outside Scotland.

What is happening through Celtic in the east of the city is not the only story in Glasgow.  The SEC Centre, with the Exhibition Centre, Clyde Auditorium and SSE Hydro has turned the Finnieston area into a world-leading venue for conferences, exhibitions and concerts.  Glasgow is now a destination city.

Much of this happened organically.  The success of the SECC encouraged more development in the area, while Celtic have had several iterations of insightful planning since the mid-90s.  In different parts of the world, cities compete to bring economic icons like Celtic to their patch.  In Glasgow, the Council heard objections to the Celtic Superstore plans as it may compete with the local Tesco.  Public transportation infrastructure caters only for local resident volumes, with no plans to move into the 21st century, while Glasgow City Council are planning to drive visitors away by insisting the nearest they can park will be 1 mile from the stadium – displacing the parking problem and increasing the time cars will be left in the area as spectators walk to and from the stadium.

The report was issued ahead of Celtic’s AGM, which is currently underway.  It is an explainer for those in positions of power who carry an economic responsibility, but seem to have little grasp of how to Let Glasgow Flourish.  The subtext to why the club asked the Fraser of Allander Institute to undertake the report is one of frustration.  Things are going well for Celtic, for Parkhead and for Glasgow, but so much more could be done if others worked with the club.

  1. No idea what was said on Res 12.Will wait on a more informative post. The other things I have picked up on,nearly pleased with ,at present.Instead of bussing fans to Ibrox,I would have been happier if we had just refused tickets. In saying that, the fans who want to go,should be able to.Any sort of actions against these fans,PL,said tickets would probably stop.

Money available to the manager in January. We will see.But I would like transparency on who we were after, not rumours.Scouting staff also need to step up to the plate.

Would like to know if the shareholder actually mentioned”Sectarian singing”in his questionThe hacks have.

  2. TURKEY BHOY

According to a twitter feed the shareholder did say ‘sectarian’ chanting

    A shareholder:

I feel there has been an increase in sectarian changing including calling Levein an orange b*****d.

He says Hoops fans are better than that.

  3. Club should refuse tickets for Poundland, and do a beamback at CP,club could put profits from catering to the Foundation and Marys Meals.

We slate the MSM for their coverage and yet we product guff like the following:

    https://www.celticquicknews.co.uk/landslide-an-overwhelming-98-of-fans-vote-for-bt-in-cqn-poll/

The premise of the article being BT Sport vs Sky, vote for whos coverage is better.

In the interest of balance and also common sense, can we now have a vote on whether we accept the highest value bid for TV rights for football in Scotland or alternatively we go with the most derisory bid?

  5. Did not see the game but it was good to hear that Scottish supporters were chanting James Forrest’s name last night and his five goals in two back to back international matches is an incredable return in International football.

James for me at any rate whenhe is on his game in Europe and for Scotland is a World class player and a joy to watch. Well done James.

It was a great pleasure to watch BT’s coverage of the SPFL, loved all the pundits and it’s a great pity that BT could not compete with the SKY money.

However as I don’t live in Scotland I would have never have seen a Celtic game on TV were it not for SKY Sports when they began covering the SPL many years ago.

  6. I don’t think we learned anything at all during the AGM.

McGinn is an Aston Villa player because he chose to be? Sure that’s true. However, at the start of the window Aston Villa had a transfer ban. Why did it take so long to get the deal done?

Either its down to Hibs being petty (possible) or we were penny pinching. We could have done with McGinn during the qualifiers.

Commper is just a disaster and the blame is firmly with the football department including Congerton and Rodgers. We knew that already.

  7. HANKRAY…

Thats a very good point and one I hadn’t thought about, HH.

The performances of McGregor and Christie of late make me glad we did not get McGinn. Whose place would McGinn have taken during the Qualifiers?

    JJ

  9. I saw a question about plastic pitches though…

The board should be pressuring the SPFL to ban them. They’d probably have support from other top 6 teams.

I’m pleased with Ryan Christie’s performances but John McGinn is an absolute top class player. There certainly would be opportunities to play all 3 when you consider injuries to Brown, Ncham & Rogic. McGregor is so effective in loads of positions.

McGinn was a fine player. We’ve missed the boat on that and I honestly think we’ll regret it in similar terms to Andy Robertson, James McCarthy, Robert Snodgrass & so on.

  11. Enjoy yourself Jamesey soon the boo boo boys will be back to give you a rough time….as they did to JJ,

    Thanks for the response.

a)` I’m pleased with Ryan Christie’s performances but John McGinn is an absolute top class player.`

    Fair enough but I prefer Christie`s more creative style;

b)` There certainly would be opportunities to play all 3 when you consider injuries to Brown, Ncham & Rogic.`

You are correct but I feel that that having THREE regular, midfield starters injured at the same time is an unusual enough occurrence to justify buying `a top class player`as cover. Besides, I would say that Brown was the only one of those three that would have allowed McGinn as a like for like replacement.

    c) ` McGregor is so effective in loads of positions.`

I totally agree but his recent form in his `new` position has been a revelation even for this admirer .

    d) Letting players go who turn out to be much better than expected is a fact of life for, I would guess, every Club. Besides, if we had kept Andy R, maybe Kieran T would not have been given the chance to shine :-)

    JJ

  13. Dilligafbhoy………..We are inclined to forget that maybe they might bring in some of the BT guys.

  14. Frannyb67

I think that might be true of Huns who support Scotland but I doubt they were singing in support of James.

Where I live now ( Arbroath) , the Tartan Army fans ( and there are quite a few), applaud Scotland`s players without any display club prejudice.

    Thanks for the response.

    a) I like Christie too. But there’s always a chance you could play both. Especially when you consider Broony’s age.

    b) You are right. With Christie, Brown, NCham, McGregor & McGinn all candidates for that number 8 position it would be a crowded field. But you kind of have to grasp at these opportunities and let the players fight for places. Maybe with McGinn, we’d see N’Cham being sold or McGregor played elsewhere.

    c) I like McGregor in the middle but I also am a huge fan of McGinn. We actually have an issue at left midfield right now with Sinclair’s inconsistencies. My only hope is that the doors open for Morgan and Johnston now McGregor is central.

    d) You never know but I do think we have a tendency to miss out on top Scottish talent. If we find a gem like KT or McGregor they tend to stick around longer than say Van Dijk or Dembele. They are rooted to Scotland by friends and family while the foreign lads are passing through.

It’s not all the clubs fault. Rival Scottish fans hate us buying their best players. Thomson at Dundee United got pelters off his own fans for selling Armstrong and GMS. Hibs seemed desperate to sell to anybody else but Celtic when it came to McGinn and Aberdeen seem to be on the same page regarding McKenna.

What if that made money for Sevco?

can’t see how a beamback at CP ,would make them any money mate? HH

  21. I’m sure it would, as a host club allowing a game they host being broadcast to somewhere else, cannot see that being allowed for nothing in return, just my opinion though, the very brave 800 who might go to Ibrox will need to be very careful in view of what has happened there in the not so distant past.

  22. I sit in the North Stand Lower and I forgot to ask for HOT water to be put in to the toilets. This is an issue that has irked me for many years.

While I thought Auldheid did his best, it looks like Res 12 is never going to get pursued by the Board in any effective manner. Auldheid must be exasperated after all the work he (and the others, of course) have done for years.

For the rest, I thought the AGM went as well as I expected.

  23. With respect, I do not see the attraction of a beam back to CP.

Celtic boozers are the place to watch it.

    HH.

  24. IF..the club are fa***in about they NEED to explain why they arent pursuing.

    Anyway…..HH

  25. Resolution 12 –Why would our club want to rock the boat?

Celtic joined at the hip for next ten years with The Rangers Football Club plc. (Defunct?)

Joint application renewal THE OLD FIRM Trademark granted on 2 November 2018.

    THE OLD FIRM Trademark

  26. Resolution 12 will only work, if, it is backed by 000’s of empty seat’s.

But, the Old Firm PLC board, know that, Brendan, the PLC’s same club ‘fudge’….has made the 53,000 faithful, look the other way, since £49 Sevco FC came into the top league, two year’s ago, and, get this,….Celtic supporter’s, queued up for their £49 Sevco tickets, a carefully constructed move by the, Old Firm PLC board, who deceitfully, used the Brendan ‘bounce’ and got Celtic supporter’s to rubber stamp, £49 Sevco FC, as the same club as, £49 Rangers FC.

    Who’s fault is that ?

    Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

  27. AGM rightly a celebration of a Historic time to be a Celtic fan and unprecedented levels of revenue .
